- The Most Notorious Act In Medieval History - The Story Of Fulk III Of Anjou And His Wife, Elisabeth Of Vendóme (970 - 999).
Was THIS The WORST Crime in MEDIEVAL History?
It was December 999 AD in the French province of Anjou.
The town square of the city of Angers was filling with local Angevins whom had travelled far a wide to witness a heinous act upon the 30 year old countess Elisabeth de Vendóme, wife of Full III of Anjou. An act so brutal it is still remembered today, more than 1000 years later.
Fulk III who was born in 972 AD always seemed to be one of the most emblematic people to emerge from the Middle Ages. Fulk was the Count of Anjou and inherited the title at the age of just 17 when his father died. He quickly became the most feared figure in France - known as Fulk Nerra or Le Noir, “The Black”, because of his savage temperament, violent destruction of his enemies and other savage acts. Yet despite this, or more probably because of it, he was also known for his immense piety, his pilgrimages. These two competing aspects of Fulk seem to be emblematic of the dichotomy of the Middle Ages; an era famed for its tremendous art, inspired by religion and its tremendous and bloody wars.
Elisabeth de Vendóme was the daughter of Bouchard I "the Old, le Vénérable” and born around the year 970, her marriage to Fulk III was probably not kind, and the marriage produced at least one child - a daughter named Adele, born circa 995 AD.
The savagery of the Middles ages was far from its only aspect the fact is that life was often short, hard and brought to a painful and brutal end.
And Fulk III embodied this greatly, his reputation never waned.

Dang that was a brutal story. I would hate to die that way. As brutal as it was, it is still interesting to learn about how things were back then. Well done on your video. Have a great day.
Thank you Steve, hope all well and catch up soon 😊😊
Been looking forward to this one Stephen! Just love your narration on these morbid tales. Tragic what men with wealth could get away with back then, women had no choice, no life, no say! Thank goodness that's changed for the most part. I hope you have more videos planned like this one. They are making a great series. Hope you're both doing well and have a great weekend.
Thank you Gez. And my apologies for the late reply. My weekends are always manic 😊 but thank you for your supportive comment, hope all well and catch up soon
Horrific event but so atmospherically filmed and delivered. A great share Stephen! 👍
Thank you Sue, sending our best and catch up soon 😊
You have the gift of story telling. From wonderful coastal walks and castles to morbid scary historic tales of woe. This one ranks pretty high Stephen. People harbor scary twists in their hearts and minds. We haven't evolved that far if truth be known. More stories to come in 2023 I am sure. Have a great NY change over. See you in 2023. ✴🇳🇿🙋♀🇳🇱
Ick, that really is a horrid and painful way to die. Loved the simple visuals in this Stephen - seeing you narrate it with just your face illuminated and mixed with the wild-looking blizzard was a nice touch to this already chilling bit of history.
Thank you Donna for your supportive comment 😊 it’s much appreciated. The tale certainly is very dark and very chilling 😊

It is a wonder how many of us are here today. Our families surely lived through a very difficult time, of which it is hard to imagine. You certainly give us a peak into the day, so vile and terrifying.
Thank you for the comment and I couldn’t agree more, I have a lot of respect for our ancestors. The hard lives they lived paved the way for a better life today 😊
Thanks for sharing 👍🌷💖

Pearl really enjoyed your story telling. What a tragic ending.
Thank you Pearl and thank you to Jim too 😊 sending our best and catch up soon
What a heinous crime. The year 999 is 666 upside down! You narrated this grisly tale with such atmosphere and foreboding. Poor woman. I cannot imagine the horror of it, and doing it so publicly too. Men of great fortune could get away with anything back in the day.
I agree, it was certainly one of the darkest single events I have come across. I think the symbolic use of the wedding gown made it even more grisly 😊 catch up soon Julie and Lucy 😊
Awesome video ❤
Thank you 😊❤️
Thanks shering mister

Wow pure evil ☹️
Pure evil for sure ☹️
Not a pleasant character. Many horrific events fill the history of our ancestors. It is hard though to be sure of the veracity of many excesses as the majority of medieval "historians" were writing from less than objective standpoints. Very often it was in the interest of those that succeeded earlier rulers to blacken the names of those who had gone before in order to show themselves in a better light. This event sounds particularly horrendous to our ears and was no doubt not the only excess of those times. Even today, if reports are to be believed, many horrors are still being perpetrated by those involved in conflict or possessed of great power. Angers is an interesting city which today celebrates its amazing castle and its being the birthplace of the future Henry II. Interesting as always. Have a wonderful New Year.
Nice, new friend
What a horrible way to go! But what an amazing way of narrating it. That probably sounds weird, I promise I’m sorta normal
