Amazing what the developers have done to this place. I remember when it was just a derelict skeleton of a structure all run down and an eyesore to the London skyline. Now it’s an incredible place with shops, bars and restaurants as shown here in your video. That lift 109 is just amazing. Nice video Darren.

All of us Malaysians are proud that our money was invested to develop the historic building of Bettersea Power Station. Thanks to the great former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato' Seri Najib Tun Abdul Razak for this great idea and vision.

Ah yes, colonialisation in reverse; not doubt you're so pleased with yourselves (although thanks to this idea/ vision the original power station was, in part, saved).

Great video mate. I was lucky to perform at Battersea in 2012 as part the "Freeze Festival" a music and snowboard show built around the abandoned power station... Having a walk around on my own without an issue was most fun ;-)

Great video, and particularly appreciated as someone who grew up in Battersea! I don't live there any more, but always see it as a symbol of "home". I left school in the year that it closed, and watched with interest the different plans for its future that came and went over the years.
I paid it a visit just after Christmas, and whilst I'm glad that it has a new lease of life, the shopping centre wasn't for me, especially on my salary! I did enjoy going up the chimney in the lift though, it was good to get a new high-rise perspective of the area.
My biggest bugbear is that because of all the new blocks of flats that have been built around it, you can only actually see it from certain angles. It used to be visible from pretty much everywhere, we used to get a great view of it from Battersea Park, but sadly, not any more.

As you know there was a fun park at Battersey back in the day. When I was around 8 my father took me there when we went London. When we arrived there we found it had been closed down a number of years before. Its great to see the old power station thriving again. I will never forget it. Would love to visit it one day when am back in England.

Happy Easter Darren. One fact that you mentioned it had no proper foundations. That's bloody amazing for a structure of that size and something I never knew. I used to spend some recreation time in the Wandsworth, Battersea area when the regeneration to today's standard was starting. Now it's progressed to being a valued area and it's listed status ensures it's future and it won't be lost into obscurity. A fellow London YTer (I'm sure you'll know of him) has recently covered this area too. Both of you have done justice to BPS. Did you spot any nests, with residents, up the lift shaft 😮 Cheers DougT

Breathtaking views, especially from the top of the chimney! It's good to see it in use again, but I found the interior rather alienating, with its up-market ambience - though the 'community bookshop' is excellent. Outside, the surrounding huge blocks of flats make for a rather claustrophobic atmosphere. Having said that, I will be returning to explore what I missed the first time. Thank's for the tour. Great video!

A marvellous video production by you, here, Darren. I remember seeing this place in dereliction back in the 80s when going in an out of Victoria station, but I never ever thought that it would be turned into a fantastic mega shopping complex like this. It's great to see that some of the old machinery has been so well restored along with the gantries. The ride up to the top of that chimney looked so impressive. Totally impressed, and so thank you for this presentation.

Excellent video Darren again, it all looks a bit too swanky for us northerners haha 😂
Those faded photos were fantastic, i lone the fact they’ve kept some of it original.
Going up that chimney made me think of Charlie and the great glass elevator. I suppose with it having no foundations there’s no underground bits to look at ?
I drive past here quite a lot when I’m “daaaan saaaaawf”. It really is a huge building that a camera doesn’t do it justice. All the best mate and don’t eat too much chocolate today haha 👍🏼

There _is_ actually stuff under the ground and under the Thames in fact.
The most atmospheric infrastructure is the pipe conduit which took waste hot water over (under!) to the infamous Dolphin Square mansion blocks. You can just about stand up in it but it's dotted with unnerving dripping water.

What bizarre timing this brilliant video is for me - I've been watching your local W.Yorks vids for ages and just last night my son and I arrived back from London... where on Saturday we went up Lift 109 too! I found the experience incredibly endearing. On the way back down, where they have the echoic recorded words 'the cats went berserk' repeating over and over in the lift, a lady standing near us got the giggles, which made us get the giggles and now I can't think of the building without that strange echo 'the cats went berserk, berserk, berserk [continue indefinitely]' going through my brain. Thanks for this informative video and for all your hard work on all your content - always high quality, friendly, interesting and educational.

That huge building was built without a traditional foundation? Darren, I have seen videos on this before but you filled in many gaps and put in so many back stories AND your photo fades are great as always. I wonder if the 'gantry cranes" were left in place to save the cost of removing them, just thinking. The photo fade at 11:49 was amazing..... Thanks to Darren for this fine watch.

I think that they were listed like the wharf cranes certainly were. They still had to be taken down and apart and refurb'd before being put back though. That mammoth task was nothing as compared to other stuff needing protecting in situ or faithfully recreating.
Don't want to be in danger of stealing our host's thunder though and can't wait for the next visual feast so now I'm just going to fade a ω α y

Oh also - Have you ever explored the lost/hidden train station underneath an area in Harrogate? (In between Leeds & York) It used to be called Brunswick Station and with a bit of research you can still get down into it. It closed in the 1800s but was used as an Air Raid shelter during the war and there’s evidence of this down there still to this day.

Another great video Darren. I've always had a fascination with this building being quite a regular passer by on the train into Victoria over the years. I've visited the new development a few times since being open. They've certainly made a good job of restoring and transforming the building itself. Its never looked so good. Sadly the classic view from the train has been obscured by those new buildings and apartments on the west side which I don't think are very attractive. The shops are mainly high end certainly out of my price range! I think the only thing I've bought there apart from a little power station ornament in the souvenir shop is a sandwich in the M&S foodstore! No Poundland or Primark here!! The outside of the power station looks stunning especially when lit at night. I've done the lift twice once during the day and once at night. Its certainly quite a moment when you burst out the top of the chimney. Shame you don't get a bit longer up there to admire the view. I wasn't sure about the audio visual display you get when waiting in the room by the lifts. I think it would be better to have some kind of visual history rather than flames and gushing water etc. All in all though its an enjoyable experience. Look forward to your films about Battersea Park.

I used to think that the comments like "I live there, you should have come and had a pint/a cuppa" were pointing to being a bit soft in the head. Then you're across the river from me and all I want to do is coo too!
I showed this to a couple of mates and they were more animated than seen before. They used to bunk off and scramble all over the place as kids. Their favourite game was trying to brain the other one by chucking loose bricks down from the top of the Turbine Hall walls onto their mate below. They took great care to miss the machinery still left though. Not for posterity's sake alas, but coz the row it made woke up security!
Looking forward to second part because there's so much to tell. Did you wrangle a show flat tour in one of those Toy-Town blocks obscuring much of this sleeping giant? Did you see how many were empty and how much they cost?!?

Great video but a minor correction. Historic England do not actually List buildings but they are the main advisor to DCMS. Also Historic England was only setup in 2015. Prior to that the adviser (in England) was English Heritage which was setup in 1984. As you said Battersea Power Station was Listed in 1980 by the Department for the Environment, which was the Department responsible for Listing buildings at the time.

When doing London trips we used to park our coaches at Nine Elms by the fruit and veg market, last time I was there the power station was just a roofless shell you could see straight through! I`m glad it has been sympathetically developed with an eye towards its` history, a great London landmark.

A great video, thanks - I had no idea what they'd done inside there, from the outside when passing by on the train to Victoria it just looks like tacky, glitzy looking apartments slapped on the side.

That is so cool how they retained some of the original equipment and flair of the building (gantry cranes, control rooms, etc.), and modernized everything, instead of just knocking it to the ground. I can't even imagine how many bricks it took to originally build that behemoth!!😲👍👍

I would like to go see it for myself as I haven’t been there but it’s looks so incredible when it was first built to power electricity for London and to keep London alive. What a beautiful building.

Really interesting. I’m glad they’ve kept some of the original features, although that rollercoaster would’ve been ace! The control room bar would be a good venue for an AdventureUs member meet up 😉

Best video I've seen in a long time. Keep it up. Rebirth of the power station follows just after your robin hatchling critter cam. Coincidence?

This location was featured in the open world game Watch Dogs Legion. I was impressed with the architecture and design while I was doing a main story mission here. The surrounding area Nine Elms is one of the most gorgeous places in the game.
