    People really don't understand this Batman. This is not a burly fighter Batman. Keaton's Batman was a SLICK Batman. He didn't waste any movements, didn't pull any punches, uses leverage to perform feats of strength that scare the shit out of criminals. This is not a Batman who jumps around like a ninja. He just remains cool, calm, waits for his opportunity, strikes, and moves on. Extremely cool if you ask me.

      As opposed to Bale's Batman who looks like a brutal military style fighter in a batsuit. I agree; Keaton's Batman made this look all but EFFORTLESS, as though HE was the one trained by a clan of shadow society fighters for five years

    • @aliceinthewired
      @aliceinthewired 10 років тому +16

      Keaton's fighting style is not practical in a real fight whereas Bale's is based in reality. Plus Bale was in Batman shape. Lastly, Bale didn't pucker his lips like Keaton did.

    • @Shenruss
      @Shenruss 10 років тому +44

      *1]* Keaton didn't have the 5 months of training Bale did for the role; more like _4 weeks_. He *still* possessed a better fighting figure than Kilmer OR Clooney [which was surprising; I've seen Clooney kick ass convincingly before]. This just shows however that the actors were working with what was given them. Either way, Keaton, a non-trained actor, *still managed to pull off convincing fight scenes,* even in a suit that was _far more restrictive_ than Bale's.
      That counts for something.
      *2]* If you want to go about this "being real", _please_ keep in mind that Burton made a *comic book* movie. That's why his rendition rang _truer_ to the characters AND visual aesthetic than Nolan's. Yes, I too enjoyed the "realism", but it detracted from the sense of the _Batman_ mythos. I *never once* managed to buy Bale in the role, as a convincing Batman, _or_ Bruce Wayne.
      It's like the Web series _Mortal Kombat: Legacy._ Yes, it had great actors. Yes it was visceral. Yes, it _tried_ for much of the series to keep it as "real' as possible. But *if you strip too many of the elements* in which the story is based, you end up _changing the story_ into something completely different.
      *3]* To my knowledge, those are Keaton's natural lips. Was that Bale's "natural" voice?

    • @Taraka1
      @Taraka1 10 років тому +4

      Oddly enough its the cowl. Its inches of latex so he couldn't turn his head, and his brow never moved. Bale breathed through his mouth alot, and was deliberately making a voice to sound scary instead of being natural.

    • @Taraka1
      @Taraka1 10 років тому +12

      Eric Dixon Bale didn't fight practically. They tried to build him up in begins but never actually showed him fight. (You can make 4 guys fly off you by throwing your arms up, and the camera was deliberately shaky to hide how stiff he was in the costume.) Dark Knight he fought like an average brawler, and came off like he was unsure if the last punch hurt so he put more umph in the next. Dark Knight Rises was summed up with Bane. He fought like a novice. The only time I saw him fight more like he'd have real trainung was the last half of his fight at city hall, when he was redirecting banes attacks.
      Keaton wasn't the flashiest fighter either since his suits were more restrictive to the dark knight version. (Batman begins was just as stiff except for the knee), but we actually saw him fight more, and he looked more experienced, the best example is in Batman Returns, with the street brawl.

      Except, Gotham City in The Dark Knight series is a more grittier and dangerous place. Which is the main point - Gotham should be a dangerous place. Tim Burton's version of Gotham is a place in which you would like to live. Nolan's Gotham is the place from which you would like to stay away as far as possible.

    That swordsman has to have one of the most unintentionally hilarious scenes in a movie ever. The completely useless sword spinning, unnecessary screaming and shouting and... good lord what was he doing waiting behind that fence in the first place?! Did he know Batman would turn up there of all spots?
    Funny flaws aside, a very memorable and awesome scene. Really shows Batman using his enemy's weakness against them.

    The word to describe both this movie and Keaton's performance is "masterful". Only Keaton, the inspiration for the Conroy Batman voice, could strike that delicate balance between the raspy edge and his normal voice. Bale just sounded like he had cancer (maybe not his fault, but hey), but Keaton in his flawless execution sounds intimidating and *real*, whilst still disguising his voice just enough that his Bruce Wayne voice and his Batman voice sound *so* different.

    • @batyoung
      @batyoung 10 років тому +4

      ***** I agree in begins his voice was not so deep and in the rest of the trilogy he is just so bad. Michael on the other hand can desquse his voice so it doesn't sound like bruce man but a perfect blend. Much like Kevin konroy in the animated series.

      Trust me, you are far from the only one to feel that. It personally did not bother me, to be honest, i just feel his version of batman was kind of boring, but the rest of the movie, well the dark knight anyway, was still pretty good. But yeah, you are far from the only one to feels that way, even when the movie was first coming out, everyone was making jokes about it and considering that one noteable flaw on the film's part, but still liked the movie well enough. I can see the humor, but his voice did not really bother me, i just get the idea behind it and it works for him, just in a different way. That one was going for a more outward and angry kind of intimidating where this one is a more subtle and eery kind of intimidating. If bale's batman were more interesting to the rate of keaton, i would find both batmans entertaining in a different but equal way.

    • @JamesEdwardsMarche110880
      @JamesEdwardsMarche110880 10 років тому +2

      Couldn't agree more regarding "masterful"! This film, the score by Burton and Keaton's rendition of Batman with that kind of bubbles-underneath, quiet anger and obsessive determination made this one of the best films of it's era.

    • @ohauss
      @ohauss 9 років тому +1

      Oilcurls Amen. With Keaton, you could look into his eyes under that mask and see that anger. Even when he took off the mask in Batman Returns, you felt this obsessive determination. With Bale, I always had the impression that he needed the suit to project fear, whereas with Keaton, the suit was a way to express himself - Keaton WAS Batman, Bale dressed up as Batman. His voice issues didn't really help feeling that suit was anything more than a disguise.
      It's always hard to convey that Batman IS the real personality whereas Bruce Wayne is the show act. It's the Bruce Wayne personality that's a "costume".

    Still, my favorite Batman film. Anton Furst's design is GENIUS. And Danny Elfman's score completely redirected all composers into a new realm for action films, away from John Williams-type scoring. Tim Burton's directing is a masterclass compared to Nolan's terrible fight editing and serious pacing flaws (still one of the most overrated directors working today - great writer, mediocre director). Instead of a "Jason Bourne Wearing A Batsuit" (Nolan's Batman movies) this is the epitome of a comic book brought to life.

      +claudiob62 I'm honestly not sure which is better, but I do know that I PREFER Nicholson's performance, because he's actually funny, yet it's a dark sense of humor which also makes him scary. Ledger's Joker, for me, is the only good thing about 'The Dark Knight', which is much too serious, but without real depth. Nicholson has the advantage of being in a more entertaining film overall. He's not the only good part, but certainly one of the best aspects of it. But he's complemented by a great performance by Keaton, a cool-looking neo-noir version of Gotham, a great musical score, and a script laced with memorable, witty dialogue. Burton put together the most entertaining Batman film. It may actually not be the best, because I personally think Batman Returns is even better and also I love Batman Begins, but I definitely think most ENTERTAINING applies to Batman89!

      THAT'S why it wasn't in the book of the movie, nor was it ever explained WHERE that fighter came from. You know why this is a great Batman and so is Returns? Because they didn't forget that this is a man who dresses up as a Bat with no powers who single-handedly takes on all crime. I mean, they didn't forget it came from a comic book. All the villains had their gimmick and weren't name-only characters. Comic book Bane and Catwoman don't have anything in common with Nolan Bane and Catwoman.

    • @YonnySix1Six
      @YonnySix1Six 9 років тому +7

      No. This is Burton's twisted interpretation of Batman. Half of Batman (89) was great, then he dropped a bomb at a factory possibly filled with innocent people and thugs. Batman doesn't kill people. Nolan knows it came from a comic, why do you think his stories are blends of different Batman comic stories. The only villain Burton did somewhat right was Joker. Penguin isn't some sewer dweller that hangs out with penguins. He's a wealthy mob boss that hates being called the penguin. Bane in Nolan's film isn't that much different from comic Bane. Catwoman from Nolan's film is much more accurate than what Burton gave us.

    • @Shanethefilmmaker
      @Shanethefilmmaker 9 років тому +6

      YonnySix1Six
      First of all Burton didn't make Batman a killer, Bob Kane and Bill Finger did, before he was retconned with his One Rule in the comics and animated series, he not only killed but also used Guns. Second, they entire factory was a front for a mob boss, no one was innocent and the Joker was using it later on to manufacture deadly poisons. Third they established his No Kill thing and deconstructed it at the same time. In the beginning of the movies, any mentioning of him killing were often told by thugs that shared stories and reporters and cops. Much of the stories included but were not limited to Batman being some kind of vampire that fed on the blood of criminals. Ergo these were little more than urban legends. Then Bruce found the man that killed his parents. Not only that, but this man was responsible for making Batman and in turn, Batman turned him into the Joker. You do the math on how pissed off Batman would be on all those accounts.

    • @YonnySix1Six
      @YonnySix1Six 9 років тому +2

      Shanethefilmmaker First I never said Burton was the first to have him kill. He probably won't be the last one either. Also that was about two years in, at that time, the 50 years of Batman's existence. So? It's still a factory that will have people working in it. You don't just have a factory with no employees. That's be one stupid mob boss. Third no they never established anything to deconstruct. They didn't deconstruct anything. Myth's about Nolan's Batman in Batman Begins were told too by thugs. Yes, he found the man who, was coincidentally the man who would become The Joker, killed his parents. So he'd be mad, doesn't change the fact that Batman would never kill. Also he kills Joker, he should have his revenge right? No more killing? Nope. In Batman Returns he down right burns someone alive. Like I said, Burton's Batman is a twisted interpretation of the character.

    • @Shanethefilmmaker
      @Shanethefilmmaker 9 років тому +4

      YonnySix1Six I don't doubt there were employees, however none of these guys seemed to have a problem with Joker as a boss. The guy overseeing lethal products during his whole "SHIP EM ALL!!!" scene treated it like it was routine rather than be scared of a psychotic clown ordering him around. During the whole raid with the Batmobile, the only ones present were the guys trying to shoot at him. I'm willing to bet those are the employees of the factory.
      You are really naive at this whole revenge thing. I'm gonna have to invoke Batman Forever on this. Kilmer pretty much said the whole reason why killing Joker never quenched his thirst for revenge and why he kept going that road. "So it happens this way. You make the kill, but your pain doesn't die with Harvey, it grows. So you run out into the night to find another face, and another, and another, until one terrible morning you wake up and realize that revenge has become your whole life. And you won't know why." When you kill someone in revenge, do you get some relief yes you do, but it doesn't last too long. Returns pretty much showed how far down Batman has gotten since his killing of the Joker, but it was ultimately Catwoman that snapped him out of it. During Max's ball, he didn't just see Selina going crazy wanting to kill Max, he saw how he himself was ending up. When he confronts them both in Penguins lair, rather than just off Max like he did Penguin, his first words were "Shut up, you're going to jail." Then and there, he was sick and tired of killing, he saw where it was taking him and he didn't want Selina to go down the same road. When Robin was about to do the same in Forever, Batman broke his newly formed no kill rule just so Robin wouldn't have blood on his hands.
