So we're just going to ignore how fast the postal service is in Central City. Snarts' letter made it through the prison mail, the USPS, and the police mail to Barry in under a day.
If there's one thing I felt the CW did well on, it's the casting of Mick Rory and Leonard Snart in The Flash. Love those two characters because of that show. I would also really love to know who was the one chode that disliked this video?
I still don't know why The CW took villains like Cold, Heat Wave and Grodd off the Flash show and put them on Legends of Tomorrow. I think them taking out most of the rogues gallery was one reason I lost interest after Season 2. Along with the show being turned from a superhero show to a bad romantic drama to pander to shippers. I have no problem with shippers if they keep it to fanfiction, don't obsessively demand their ships become canon and don't want a show where romance is either a minor subplot or there is none to be all about it. The selfishness of the CW Barry put me off in later seasons too. In Seasons 1 and 2 he actually wanted to do good and help people. But starting at the end of Season 2 whenever the slightest thing goes wrong in his life he goes back in time to change it. He's also incompetent and can't do anything without his team. Comic Barry can do things on his own. I don't think CW Barry would be able to stop a common crook who stole somebody's wallet without Caitlin,Cisco and the various versions of Wells holding his hand. CW Barry has this scarily obsessive mindset where he doesn't seem to care if the rest of the world dies as long as he and Iris don't.
I was a little kid in the Bronze Age and LOVED these! It really felt like you were getting a huge deal when you found a comic book on the spinning metal rack that had an "extra free" story in it.
You should do the story when Green Lantern met Aaron Burr! Also, I loved Cary Bates’s run on the Flash.. at least until Iris died. The Flash was my favorite comic
Thank you for finally discussing a comic I can honestly claim to be too young to have read! I can't say I ever found Flash to be dull but I did prefer when Wally was the man in red rather than Barry. At least a small part of that though is that when I first read Flash comics wally was a popularly used term for a foolish person and I like childish jokes the writer wouldn't have been aware of. I only really got into comics when I moved to London in 1988 and could get my hands on them easily. There was a shop in Notting Hill that sold second hand comics too so I was able to get up to speed on most things back to the early 80's. Mostly DC as my wages weren't all that high as a student psychiatric nurse and I had to choose my form of rationing. I still spent far more than I should have- it was a fun time. Anyway, I was able to get a pretty full run of Green Lantern comics too and I have to say I never liked Hal. The man's a prick. I always preferred Guy- still a dick but at least an entertaining one. My point is, if ever there was a character who might have benefited from having his mind expanded by magic mushies it was Jordan. Shame it doesn't seem to have worked. I'm away now to look up when Captain America"accidentally" took meth- sounds fun!
we should also have a conversation about.... superman pretending to be reflecto superman pretending to be gangbuster superman pretending to be batman And now, for a new concept.... a Kryptonian with multiple personalities.
I read *_The Flash_* for most of the book's run, and I did think that in the early 1970s the book was, well, _running in place._ When Iris was killed in 1979, I recognized it as an attempt to shake up the status quo. I'd been thinking myself that it would be a good time for Iris to become pregnant, preferably with some colorful complication to the pregnancy that would require the intervention of the advanced medical science of her parents' time period. That would have led to the child being forced to remain in the future, with Iris saying she wanted to stay also, and Barry persuading Wally to take over and become the Flash of the 20th Century so the family could stay together. Oh, I also figured out how to resolve the confusion about Iris' birth parents living in a world so different from the Legion of Super-Heroes: "What, did I say 2971, Wally? Must have been a slip of the tongue. No, the Russels live in 2791. I've never been to the 30th Century. Superman says it's beautiful, though." But instead, Iris just died. And stayed dead for more than five years.
Ooh, better idea: hide the speaker's face on the cover and let people THINK it's Barry, then have it turn out to be Captain Cold thinking he's the Flash! And add in Flash thinking he's Captain Cold just because! And only Heat Wave can sort it all out! 😊
not even just that... in Comedy the 'Straight Man' is the 'normal' guy who the 'Funny one' works off of, setting up jokes, and/or not getting the joke when it's made... so it can also be used for a 'stick in the Mud' or a Boring person as well
Definitely didn't find Hal Jordan or Barry Allen boring back in the day, but then, I was a kid, so what did I know? LOL I love that you point out how clumsy Hal is, it cracks me up! You deliver just the right blend of snark and love that makes these videos very watchable. LOL You know another trait of Hal's I've been noticing lately as I've been rereading the old bronze age DC comics, which you touched on in this video, is that Hal is going to be a super hero whether his ring is working or not. Granted, it's not as funny a trait as his clumsiness, but I've seen it more than once and it really endears Hal to me. He's not defined by his ring or his powers, he's defined by the type of person he is.
Late to the party but I did read this issue... And most of the Flash comics of the time. He was my favorite superhero for a time, despite the subpar rogues gallery.
Can we hear about the “Uoh” Green Lantern period? Pls. Also, it’s interesting to hear about past trends. What “dead” comic trends/troupes do you or anyone reading like/wish were still popular?
Wow Cap doing meth. GL Doing shrooms. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone from either DC OR MARVEL Blaze up a joint lol. Also captain cold is a great 👍🏾 super villain who doesn’t get enough credits that he deserves.
I owned a copy of this back in the 70's. Love the Irv Novick artwork on this series. Really would love to see these collected and/or on DC Universe Infinite.
It's been decades since I've read this issue! What confused me about it was that it wasn't about The Flash at all but Captain Cold. Of course I believe that this was around the time that Marvel did Supervillain Team-Up and DC released the nine-issue Joker title. Bad guys with their own stories would be a good topic to cover some time...
Yes, old stories from the ?silver? age, and the story about Barry in the future serving out his punishment... I would love some more information on that arc... Which ended with Crisis on Infinite Earths in the comics... I believe it was almost 10 years that Barry (and Iris, apparently a super big plot twist) were living in the future, and raising the twins.
I did read Flash when these stories were new. One of my first comics was Flash 229, but I was 8, so... However, I do remember reading the 3 parter spanning 235, 236, and 237...and loving it. It still holds fond memories. So, check that out.
Sasha, you're adorable. You crack me up. Keep on keeping on. I'll be watching. Through the 'net. Not like a creepy stalker. I have no life is all. It's why I read comics...at over fifty.
True. Except Batman’s rouge are mental ill and If not backstab, and flash’s rouges are all sort a family ala juggalo. ( even the one that is not part rouges minus grodd and professor zoom )
Green Lantern and Flash were my second and third favourite heroes as a kid, based solely on my perception of them as the second and third most powerful DC heroes (after Superman, of course). Wonder Woman had yet to achieve her demigod-level powers, Batman was just a rich guy with a utility belt and Aquaman talked to fish.
Man imagine gl getting the munchies and accidentally eating some of Ollie's famous chilli 🌶 🥵 do you think the scovals would sober him up or make him have a really bad trip?
Omniverse Hal in fact did accidentally do "shrooms", the rest with the light show and the whole next issue retcon to remove the "shrooms" aspect was just Hal rewriting the story in his own mind because he couldn't face what really happened.
🙂🙂🙂 Sasha you are tripping me out with these vids! Please continue! Not sure if you stick with DC only, but I would love to hear your analysis of Cap and the dude who used superglue as a weapon 😂 I think Zemo was the name.
The first issue of Flash that I bought was #264, but you can bet I was picking up back issues of Flash when I could find them, including the issue you reviewed here. The Cary Bates/Irv Novick team ran for quite a while on Flash, and it was a lot of fun. Bates would come up with some ridiculous idea, and Novick would make it look believable, somehow. Plus, Flash's Rogues Gallery was so good. The Green Lantern backup stories in Flash weren't that great. I don't think Denny O'Neil was very good at doing 6-8 pagers; he really needed a full-length comic to do his stories. But the Green Lantern/Green Arrow/Black Canary team was great! And was even more fun when they re-introduced Air Wave into the mix, although he didn't stick around too long. DC had several B-list writers and artists in the 1970s, those who just never became really big, but who were still fun and enjoyable. People like Bob Rozakis, Gerry Conway, Alex Saviuk, Romeo Tanghal, Don Heck, Ramona Fradon, E. Nelson Bridwell, etc. Most of their work was never going be reprinted, but they still made enjoyable comics anyway.
I have this particular issue and have most of the Flash and Green Lantern/Green Arrow comics from that time period. I definitely enjoyed them back in the day, but I haven't re-read them in quite some time to know what my take would be on them now.
I have this issue! Or, I have a version of it. Here in Australia, post-war censorship regs meant that the original comics couldn't be published here - we had to make do with black-and-white reprints conjured up in Singapore. Great story though - I was, like, 9 when it came out...
"gourgeousist" (meaning the most gorgeous) is not a slang word. It's just a rare conjugation of gorgeous. Unless you're trying to imply gorgeous itself is a slang word that's overstayed its welcome, then it's not a slang word at all. Therefore, we can still say gorgeousist if we want to even today! It's not an old word gorgeuous is still used today. We need to see that conjugation more often!
Oh yes there's some bad ones, like Haljor the Barbarian.😒 Man,that was bad. Plus I always wondered how the Guardians let Chukkis stay a lantern since he killed, stole the ring and ate the lantern of his sector...weird.
If this was 1970... what makes it bronze age? I mean in 1970 the Silver and Bronze age overlap.. and so this title/issue could be Silver especially considering the art, and storyline.. So I'm wondering what made you decide to call it Bronze rather than Silver? Even in the Description you say ' today we're talking about the Silver Age' , which furthers my confusion.
Im not old enough to have collected these when they came out, but you said "silver age stories in the bronze age" or similar... running a retro comic is going to be boring. Flash had an outstanding Silver Age, no wonder the character could get stuck there. Green Latern was pretty boring until they fully embraced the grim side of the Bronze Age, and then maybe they took it too far and basically killed the character for decade(s)
