Apple Pay Suica is just like the plastic one, add money and use it until you need to add more.
You can Suica Recharge with Apple Pay credit/debit cards or you can use cash to recharge with new Suica “Charge” kiosks in major Tokyo area JR stations. 2 simple steps:
- Place iPhone or Apple Watch in the blue Charge bin
- Select the amount of money you want to add on the touch screen and feed some bills to start the process
The Charge bin flashes red while Suica charges then turns blue when complete, iPhone and Apple Watch also gives you a screen notification of the recharge amount.

When you use Apple Watch, do you need to double tap your watch button when scanning at the gantry? Or you just place your watch (similar to iPhone 7, 8 and X) on the scanner?

Just put it in the bin and Suica will recharge. Express Transit will disable itself after 5 minutes unless you re-enter the passcode.

This machine is only for cash recharge. Renew Apple Pay Suica commuter pass in Wallet or Suica App: atadistance.net/2017/09/08/apple-pay-suica-commuter-pass-renewal-window/
For plastic Suica commuter look for the machine nearby that says Suica Commuter Pass to renew with cash.

Sorry to have missed your comment, UA-cam notifications are not working. The machine is for recharge only. You can renew commute plan in Wallet before expiration. If the pass expires you must renew it in Suica App atadistance.net/all-about-suica-app/
