Hi, I visited Japan a few years ago and forgot to cash out my Suica. I know they expire and I’m not sure if I’d return before then. If I transfer the balance to my iPhone will that balance be safe from expiration? Also, is that balance backed up to iCloud and transferable to a new iPhone?

Sorry for the delay in answering. Suica locks after 6 months of inactivity but a recharge activates it for use: atadistance.net/2018/04/26/unlocking-the-suica-lock/
You are correct, when plastic Suica is transferred to Apple Pay the balance is stored on iCloud and can be transferred to a new iPhone or Apple Watch.

Do you need to authenticate with Face ID to activate the Express Cards?

When Express card is set in Wallet it only requires a one time Face ID, after that just the normal passlock code after iPhone boot to activate Face ID is all you need to activate Apple Pay and Express Cards

Hey, how do you recharge your Suica using Apple Pay? I tried before but it says I can't recharge it through the machine. 😭

Maki sure you have Express Mode on and try a Smart Charge kiosk like the one in this video. If it is an older kiosk for smart cards and not smartphones you can recharge by putting Apple Pay Suica in service mode and then recharge

It only works on Japenese models of iPhone, international models don't have the required Sony FeliCa antennas for Suica to work.

the iPhone 8 and up already has the necessary hardware in every model to do this task. Just be sure to switch your region to Japan and work from here.
