What fun! I'm developing a board game for a book series I'm writing, and I want it to be portable (something sailors would have, or traveling tradesmen). This has given me some ideas with how to approach the portability aspect of it. Thanks for letting us watch you make this!
I'm glad you found it useful! ❤️ I'd love to read your series when it's available 😄
Did you ever finish fleshing out the concept? What's the game called?
@@VampireNewl I still don't have a name, but yes, the game is fleshed out and ready so I can put instructions on my website when the book is published. I plan to put a QR code in the back so people who want to make their own can do so.
@@EfiLovesBooks Thanks, Thats pretty cool
Great build - thanks for showing it start to completion.
I can add that crafting is a wonderland that some people (guys) don't always pay enough attention to. Years ago I wanted to make life trackers for the game Star Realms. I printed out the parts, painstakingly cut them out with an exacto, and then was stumped as to how to put the pieces together. My wife came to the rescue with grommets from the craft store that she used for card making. She also had a punch set and decorative hole cutter that worked perfectly to 'automate' the project. Her tools took my project from crude prototype to something I was pleased to gift to my friends.
Good tools make all the difference. Having a plan helps, too.
P.S. - The Casio FX-300ES (I think) was overkill here, but appreciated all the same.
Thank you for the high praise!
I 100% agree with you that not enough people think that they can craft something on their own. That's why I want to show people that, indeed they can! Games are even more fun when you make them yourself! That's why I am also a huge proponent of the Makerspace/Hackerspace movement.
I debated whether to go through the math on this one (with the Casio 😉) , but I decided to keep it in there in case some folks wanted to make a more precise looking board.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks, this is just what I need.
Ok this is so so cool!
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed the project!
I would use a divider or the caliper set to 0.9" when marking out the lines for the squares 🤔
Yup, that would have worked too! But I wanted to show folks how the process and the math worked.
Thanks for watching!
@@TheRavensTable I have the Viking Game hnefatafl set, but I'm going to make one of these also. Great channel :)
That looks incredible! Would love to try this project, good work mate
Thank you very much, I hope you enjoy making your own!
Great tutorial! I can't wait to try it myself. I've got some experience with leather working and some spare skins running around to try this out on. After watching your hnefatafl video a little bit ago it seems like a great opportunity.
Making a board-bag out of leather would be a great alternative to cloth! Depending on the type of leather and how it was finished, you can sometimes use a pyrography (wood burning) tool to burn the board into the leather.
Where do you buy your canvas?
In this case, I had some scrap canvas left over from a project where I built a portable shade awning.
But you can frequently find scrap bits of canvas or other textiles at your local fabric store. If you don't mind buying a lot, you can also buy a painter's drop cloth from a home improvement store (that's what I did for the awning project).
Thanks for watching!
