A great video. I recently started aikido and this is a great exercise. I am 6'5'' and my rolls were as smooth as a tumbling giraffe. After applying your routine to my workout, I find that my rolls are less impacting and more fluid. Thanks Sensei.
Dear Lynne, thank you so much for your kind comments. I'm glad you benefited from the detail. You may enjoy more information from my fitness book (check Amazon), which has several chapters about rolls too. If you have any questions, please contact me by email and I'll be happy to help. All the best to you, Artie.
Practice at home will accelerate your ability to do smooth and soft rolls easily. You can do most of this practice in an area about the size of a beach towel. After seeing the whole video through, I'd suggest you focus on the section from 2:00 to 2:40 minutes to see the back roll toes to the back corners routine, and then also the section from 7:05 to 8:05 minutes for the front leg extension, knee tuck and stand up (which includes a full front to back and front routine from 7:25 to 7:40 minutes). Watch those sections over and over to remember the details and practice these every day at home (less than one minute of exercise, 10 per day = nearly 4,000 a year!). One alternative to putting your hands at your toes is to put them at your knee (this is explained in my book). If questions, please contact me through my website by email. Wishing you well, Artie.
Dear Abdullah Barrous, thank you so much for your outstanding comment. I am honored by your review. If I can be of more assistance, please let me know. You can contact me via my webpage. Please share my video with others who you think will benefit. Check my books too on Amazon. Artie
Brilliant! Thank you for making this. It's really helpful to see the step by step portions of ukemi, makes it a thousand times more approachable for a beginner (1 month of training and still no luck in mae ukemi). Ukemi not so scary after all : )
Thanks ChuckerThe1, I agree. Dobnovan Waite's UA-cam on rolls is excellent. I already had it in my own favorites and I'm glad you mentioned it for others. Whatever helps you to visualize and practice your soft rolls is good for development. Keep on practicing (including my suggested daily back toe touches and forward extension and leg split, tuck and turns, which can be done at home in a small space), Artie.
Thank you Abhishek! Good luck with your practice. For more details see my fitness book available on Amazon (aside from other self-help books). Feel free to email me directly to discuss other tips for aikido and for life. Wishing you well, Artie
Profound. I have been wanting to learn this in my Aikido class but never got it down. This is Aikido basics but it's not easy to learn. It was frustrating. Thank you for posting this instructive video. You have a simple yet thorough way of teaching. Thanks again.
larkatmic Good luck enjoying and learning aikido. I wish you many safe and productive workouts. You can find more details about rolls in my fitness book (Kindle version or soft cover). Please contact me through my website and we can exchange emails with more details and tips for your success. Artie.
Dear Cat Nguyen, thank you for taking the time to view the video and comment. I enjoy sharing techniques for success, in aikido and for life (see my books on Amazon). Let me know if I can be of further help to you. Contact through email is welcome. Artie.
Dear LSM van der Pol, thank you for your comment. I am happy to know that the detail provided was useful to you. I hope it helps others as well. See my website and my books for more information to help your aikido, career and life. As always, contact me on email for more followup information. Artie.

¡Excellent video Mr. Lynnworth! The true wisdom of a master. It's a pleasure to meet people like you and can learn from them. Thank you very much from Spain too, Mr. Lynworth. Oss¡
Dear Guerrero Mistico, I am far from being a master, but I do enjoy sharing techniques for success in aikido, careers and life (see my website and books). My wife and I have enjoyed traveling through Spain. Thanks for letting me know where you are. It's fun to see the world-wide exposure that this video has. Feel free to contact me through my website to chat more and share tips for aikido ukemi. Best of luck to you, Artie.

Artie Lynnworth Dear Mr. Lynworth, Artie. Thank you very much again. Is normal that masters say that they are far from being a master. The truth is that you are a good and wise person. Thank you very much again, Adolfo.
Hey Artie, I'm a beginner at judo practice (white belt), and I have some dificulties with the back rolls. Your video really helped me to improve this tricky technique. So thank you very much for sharing your knowledge with us. Wish you good health and best of luck. Domo arigato gozaimassu...
Hi Luciano, thank you for taking the time to write me. I'm glad the tips helped for your rolls. At home practice (especially the corner toe touch) will greatly improve your fluidity, safety and comfort. Please let me know if I can help more. Be sure to check my books on Amazon, including the fitness book which has more details on rolls. All my best wishes to you, Artie.
A wonderful & progressive demonstration that is well explained!! You are a excellent instructor. I had a terrible time with the backward roll and now you have made it so easy to learn & teach!! Thank you sensei!
Dear M. Ma-hou Wong, you have made my day! Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. I'm so happy for you. I enjoy coaching and sharing, with this video and in my various self-help books on Amazon (including my fitness book that has more detail on rolls). Check them out too. Wishing you well, Artie.
Hello There, Thank you very much to showing your easy Aikido rollings in UA-cam. I’m for 6 mounth to learning O Shin Aikido, i liked very much to do it. It is not easy, i learned every day. Many greetings from the Netherlands, Riny. .
Dear Riny, thank you for your comment. Nice to hear from the Netherlands, where my wife and I have been several times (love it there!). Keep with your aikido practice, especially doing the at-home roll basics (toe to corner). You can read and see more details in my fitness book. If questions, please contact me directly through my website and email. Wishing you well, Artie.
This is soooo essential. If you do not learn this properly everything important in aikido like finding your balance and doing the tecnichs properly will not be possibile. Tnx for taking your time to do this. Thi is the kiai of aikido. It is not about image.
I am honored by your comment. Thank you so much for your perspective and contribution to this video. I fully agree, and hope those viewing the video will appreciate what you have shared. Please let others know about the video and also check my books for more tips in aikido and life. Wishing you well, Artie.
I agree Artie- the more sources you can pull from the better. It would benefit any Aikidoka to learn as many ways/methods of taking ukemi. You never know how you will get thrown and having multiple ways of taking ukemi will keep you from getting hurt. - happy training!
thank you artie.sorry for my late delay..im will started at home by practising first basic ground rolls..last week i did my first good ground forward roll...the sensei found it good.. now the rest..im have need this for my 6 kyu exam...thank you..your video really helped.!
+Ney Lira Good luck with your new Aikido experiences. Ukemi is often one of the early challenges, and with your dojo practice and at-home exercises you can quickly master rolls with safe, soft, quiet and smooth movements. Feel free to contact me through my website where email allows more freedom to discuss additional tips and details. I'm happy to offer coaching to support your sensei and dojo experience. Good luck and enjoy! Artie.
Dear @PauloAbreu, wow, what a thrill to receive your generous comment. Thank you! Techniques that work are long lasting. I am glad you enjoyed this video and hope it helps. Perhaps you'll find good tips in my self-help books too (available on Amazon), whose royalties all go to charity (it's not about sales income but about helping others). All the best to you! Artie.
Hi Abnuga, thanks for your comment. Glad the video helped with your back roll control. The daily practice of the rocking back to each corner, touching your toe to the floor, will greatly improve your muscle-memory and positioning. A few minutes a day will add up to excellent form. Please contact me through my website if you want more detail. Happy to exchange emails with your specific questions. Wishing you well, Artie.
Dear Book Wormie, sorry for my slow reply (I was traveling). Glad the video helped your back rolls. Thanks for writing your comment. Consider my fitness book too for more tips (and my other self help books for life and career). You can always contact me through email as well for personal coaching for free. Wishing you well, Artie.
Hi Karen, welcome to Aikido and the best of luck in your training. It's good that you're studying, and in particular rolls. Be sure to support on your front arm when doing the forward (mae ukemi) roll. If you want more tips or have more questions, please email me through my website. I wish you well, Artie
Very Nice Content, I have written about rolls on my website and had planned to do more on Breakfalls a while back, Well cohesive explanation of forward and backward rolls . I hoping to more on rolls myself as I begin more series traning again after my multiple bouts of the dreaded virus. Your explanation is very easy to understand . This was very good.
Dear Snakedojo, thank you so much for your comment, especially from a writer, who appreciates the importance of clear communications to make the difficult seem easier, rather than making the simple too complex. Those were my objectives and I'm glad you found the training video easy to understand. I hope you check out my fitness book too (as well as my other self-help books). Please share my video and books with others. Wishing you well, Artie.
Hi Artie Lynnworth, I am new with Aikido and practising these rolling. Thanks so much for this very nice lesson. It helps me to understand how to controll my body better when doing these. Hope you have more basic lessons as this one for white bells like me.
Dear Natik, thank you for your comments. I hope you enjoy practicing your rolls. Check my fitness book too for more information on rolls. I welcome emails too via my website. All the best, Artie.
Dear Ade Tambunan, thank you for your comment. I am not planning on making a shikko video soon, but will keep your suggestion in mind. In the meantime, you can check the internet for many shikko videos. One you may find interesting (with no sound, just watch the demonstrations) can be found by searching "advantages-of-seiza-and-shikko-in-the-eyes-of-a-physiotherapist" to begin. Remember to keep heels together as you rotate hips. Please contact me through my website to further discuss this or any other topic. Thanks, Artie.
This is a very good video for those new to aikido and trying to get their ukemi together. Thanks for the clear and well thought through explanations :)
+Sam E Thanks for your feedback. For those who want more detail, or prefer text and photos, my new fitness book (see Amazon; Get Fit and Stay Fit for Life, by Artie Lynnworth) has several chapters on aikido rolls. Also, I welcome emails, via my website, where more Q&A can be addressed. Wishing you well, Artie.
Thanks for this excellent video. I am learning Shorinji Kempo, which has some similar techniques to Aikido, including the Ukemi. I think the instruction is excellent, but I just can't roll, and have even injured myself coming down hard. I used your video and within 10 minutes I was doing a nice backward roll from the right leg. I'm almost there on my left, though for some reason I end up going over my neck/head sometimes. Anyhow, thanks again, great video.
+Chris fromVaires Dear Chris, thanks for writing. Rolls are often a challenge for those starting aikido, and that's why I provide the detail to help explain what to do and how to practice at home instead of just at the dojo. Feel free to contact me by email through my website and I'll be happy to offer more tips. I hope my books can help you as much or more than the video. Good luck, Artie.
Found this aikid clip is much more useful than bunch of aikido 'try to be cool and super' craps....thanks a lot...helped me to teach beginners in aikido much better..... Good clip.....
+Martin Brand Dear Martin, thank you for taking the time to watch the video and to send me a note. Click Like and Share with friends. I'm glad the video helped. I have several chapters about rolls in my fitness book (you can search my books on Amazon, under author Artie Lynnworth). You and other viewers can contact me through my website for longer communications via email. Wishing you well, Artie.
A pleasant surprise today - after practising the backwards rolling quite a bit this week, I discovered that my forward roll is suddenly a lot smoother than it had been! Thanks again, this video has helped tremendously.
Hi Mr. Lynnworth, as a 47 years old man, i'm doing this things sometimes difficult somehow, and didn't think to break it down ilke this, this was Good thanks. By the way, when i watched your only but valuable video, my first reaction was to try to learn "who this man is" and next "let me Read his book" and finally it's happening right now. Don't know if you have done it intentionally but maybe you might consider it as a marketing idea as well. Best regards from Istanbul-Turkey. :)
Dear Haluk, thank you for writing. You may be the first to write from Turkey. I am glad you are reading my books. Which one? I hope you enjoy them all. If you wish, we can communicate easily by email. You can "contact" me through my website. I will be happy to offer more tips for aikido and for topics from my books. My best wishes to you, Artie.
Enjoy the book. Thank you for your purchase. If you want to discuss any of the book contents and ideas, please email me through my website "contact" tab. Better to email than to use UA-cam for such private conversations. Tell your friends about the roll video and also the books. Check my fitness book too (has roll chapters). Artie.
Rodrigo Viana, thanks for your comment. Glad you enjoyed this. If you and others have questions, please contact me through my website and I'll be happy to answer questions. Share the link. Also, see my new fitness book for more tips on rolls. Enjoy, Artie.
Dear Ezhil, thanks for your comment. I enjoy helping beginners and any viewers who are looking to do rolls safely, softly and smoothly. Please don't hesitate to contact me by email (through my website) so that we can exchange more details for added tips and help. These email communications may help you, not only for aikido but also for the topics covered in my books. I hope to hear from you and other viewers by email. Wishing you well, Artie
Thank you to all who have taken a moment to write me back about my video. I appreciate your posted comments and "likes" that are provided. It's fun to see the locations from where you write (around the world). I am happy that my video provides help and guidance as you each develop your rolls and aikido skills. I welcome the opportunity to exchange more detail with you via my website (see the link at the beginning and end of the video), so we're not limited by length of text on UA-cam, and can be more detailed and thorough with email. All the best to all of you! Please share this video with your friends. Thanks, Artie.
Dear GIC7, thanks for your note. You are going to keep getting better by practicing these techniques. Consider also my fitness book, with 3 detailed chapters and photos on aikido rolls, plus many other fitness tips. If questions, feel free to contact me through my website. Wishing you well, Artie.
Hi Dominic, I'm thrilled that the video worked for you. Please share it with friends to help them too. If you need more tips or help, please contact me through my website. Also, you may enjoy reading my fitness book and other self-help books. Look for them on Amazon (eBook and soft cover). All the best, Artie.
Thank you very much for a great video. I really enjoy the very relaxed informative way in which you teach the basics. I have had some good points to break down my own rolls and make them better by training single parts of the rolls. I will certainly make a link for my Fellow students in the dojo where I practice. Best regards John Haagen Rasmussen Bornholm, Denmark
Dear John Haagen Rasmussen, thank you so much for your kind words. I am honored to know my video helps, and that through your sharing of the link that others can "like" it and benefit too. I enjoy coaching, mentoring and helping. Please see my website for information about my books, and as a way to contact me directly through email. I wish you and your fellow students well, in aikido and life. Artie.
Hi Daisy, good luck with your roll practice. As I describe in the video and also in my Fitness Book (available on Amazon as digital or soft cover), you can practice at home in addition to the dojo, in a small space to gain control of your body position. I welcome emails and have even done free coaching by Skype or FaceTime. I wish you well, Artie.
Michael, thank you for your comment! Enjoy sharing this with your other aikido friends, as well as check my fitness book that has more aikido roll details. Wishing you well, Artie.
Dear Syrizis Syrizaios, congratulations on starting aikido. I wish you well and hope you will keep safe without injury. Be sure you are getting good support on your front arm so you don't crash to your shoulder. Your arm should be like a wheel (the unbendable arm), shifting your support from hand to elbow to shoulder to back, not from hand to shoulder. Study the video and please contact me through my website. We can also try to do a Skype training session together if you like. Good luck, Artie.
Dear EZstyle Gaming, thanks for your comment. I enjoy coaching and appreciate knowing my guidance is helpful. Please also look into my self-help books on Amazon, ranging from tips on life to resume and interview skills and also fitness (including more on aikido rolls). I hope these books are helpful, just like the video. All the best, Artie.
Thank you Mark. I enjoy sharing tips for success, including roll techniques in my fitness book. I do not have more aikido videos, but I do have several published books that are available through Amazon. See: www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=artie+lynnworth&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Aartie+lynnworth. These are available in soft cover and eBook versions. You can "look inside" to see content and style, including my fitness book with 3 chapters on aikido rolls. The other books can help in life and career. As always, I welcome contact through my website with emails where I can provide more personal coaching and guidance. I wish you well. Thanks, Artie.
Dear Rafael, thank you for writing. I am in Chile now, so we're almost neighbors (my video was created in Chile several years ago, and we come back here each summer; I've enjoyed my visits to Brazil too.). I hope this helps your at-home practice. If you want to chat more, please contact me through my website or email. Wishing you well, Artie
Hi Mitchell, thanks for your comment! I laughed as I read your description of your lanky body doing rolls. Great visual. Smile! Wonderful that you are feeling better with your rolls. I'm glad the video helped. Please contact me through my website and we can exchange more emails. I'll be happy to give you more tips (same is true for all video watchers; I enjoy coaching and the exchange of emails through my website (artiedot lynnworthdot com). Keep in touch and good luck to you. Artie.
Dear Jin Rong, thank you for your comment. I am honored by your feedback and those I receive from other happy viewers. Please contact me through my website and we can stay in touch for more follow-up (see details below). Wishing you well, Artie.
Dear Ricardo, thanks for your comment! I hope the video was helpful to you and the others who view this. If ever you'd like to chat more, please contact me through my website. Happy to share more aikido tips and tips for life and career (see books). Artie.
Hi, this is a great instructional video! Thank you so much! (from Russia :) The links you put in your video weren't clickable for me, but I still managed to take a look at your website. I'd recommend putting the link to your website in the description of the video, too. It's easier to just click it from there.
Dear "Steel Dutchess," thank you for your feedback, all the way from Russia. I was not sure if UA-cam allowed putting in links but I'll try it now to see if it posts (artie.lynnworth.com/AVLbooks/Author.html). I did add the link to the description. I welcome contacts by email (see "contact" tab). Wishing you well, Artie.
Oh, I understand. But yes, youtube allows posting links. Most youtubers put all their twitter, instagrams, facebooks, ALL of that in the description. lol However, I still don't see your link in the description, though. All I see in the video description portion is this: "A beginner's guide to Aikido forward and backward rolls, or for those wanting to perfect their style for soft, controlled movement. The nearly 9-minute demonstration begins with easy rocking back and forth basics on the mat, and advances through a simple progression that can either start or finish standing upright. Tips include what to do and what not to do in order to have smooth rolls." Maybe, it's a glitch or something. Best Regards! :)
Done. I've updated the description now. Thanks for the followup. I hope you and others will enjoy browsing my website and benefit from the various self-help books. Wishing you well, Artie
Dear Rain Sadkane, thank you for your comment. I enjoy teaching and sharing, and I am thrilled to know that my video has helped you and many others. I appreciate the feedback. I welcome dialogue back and forth, so please visit my website and email me with comments, questions and more. All the best to you and the other UA-cam viewers. Artie.
Thanks for the video. I'm learning Kung Fu, and I'd been having ridiculous trouble learning how to do the rolls! Your video was very helpful. I now know why I fall over sideways when I try to backwards roll!
Hi Horacio Correa, thank you for your comment. I'm happy that the video can help you with understanding ukemis. I've enjoyed Argentina several times and lived in Chile for nearly a decade (that is where I started learning Aikido). Share this video with your friends, and all are welcome to contact me through my website. Best wishes for your aikido success, Artie.
Hi Viet Phuong Nguyen, thank you for writing. You are not alone. Most beginners and even those who are more advanced in aikido find that rolls are one of the more difficult skills to master. Daily practice can make a big difference, so try to find an area to do the back toe touch and the forward split-legs, tuck and torso turn. Ten a day is over 3,500 practices per year. Please contact me on my website and I can share more tips with you. Good luck, Artie.
Dear Khadijah Joy Sams, you are very welcome. If you have more questions, please contact me directly through my website, and/or consider reading my book on Fitness, available from Amazon: "Get Fit and Stay Fit for Life," with a special appendix with tips and progressions for aikido rolls.
Dear Zeratulalbo, thanks for your question that may help others who find they get dizzy when rolling. You are not the only one. My quick suggestion is to try to focus on something in front of you as soon as you are finishing your roll. Allowing your head and eyes to concentrate in one spot, rather than just moving all the time, will help. I'd be happy to give you more tips, but am limited by UA-cam character max. Please write to me by email via my website and we can talk more. Good luck, Artie
Dear Laukinuke00, thanks for your comment. If you have any follow-up questions, please let me know. You (and other UA-cam participants) can contact me through my book website, (Artie Lynnworth books will aid your search). Have fun practicing, Artie.
Dear Juba Sin, thank you for commenting. I appreciate the feedback and welcome questions. Viewers should contact me through my website and I'll be happy to address specific questions and arrange Skype video workouts to observe, comment and help. See below for how to access my site. Thanks, Artie
Hi xxHockeyMonke92xx, I am sure many who read your comment will have the same feelings! Also, it helps to put a folded blanket, sleeping bag or bedspread on the wood floor, especially when first learning to roll. Begin with rocking and the back toe touches and eventually you gain muscle memory for fluid and soft movements. For forward rolls, be sure to support well with the front arm. Contact me through my website and we can exchange emails and tips further. Wishing you well, Artie.
Hi SnowSkadi, thanks so much for the feedback! I'm thrilled that the video was so helpful to you. Keep practicing and it keeps getting easier and smoother. I'll enjoy sharing more tips with you (and any of the video viewers) by email through my website. Please feel free to contact me for more tips. Skype video workouts are possible too, for free personal training. I've done that with students internationally. It works. Please share the site with your friends. All the best, Artie.
Dear Rottixx1958, thank you so much for your comment! Glad the details helped. Please contact me through my website (see below) and I will be happy to exchange emails with you (and any other viewers). I have videos on that site about job interviewing, but no other Aikido videos yet. Keep practicing! Best wishes, Artie.
Hi @bjb0808, thanks for your comment. Glad you enjoyed the explanation. For the basic rocking on your back, just a plain carpeted floor or runner can work. For the actual rolls, you can search the internet for exercise mat sections, and you'll find many options for pieces you can put together to fit your limited space. If you have a garage, that's another option where you can order a full folding mat to use while your car is out of the garage. For more detail on rolls, check my fitness book that has a whole section on aikido rolls (Note: royalties go to charity; I don't push book sales to generate income, I just like to help people meet their full potential). Good luck with your practice. Artie. www.amazon.com/Get-Fit-Stay-Life-ebook/dp/B0CBSR7YQB?ref_=ast_author_dp&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.X8-1jDa0wHtF4xf5wel2sZZdFEHMcSjMVhzB_Q3nou1Pt39lXcWreFtJxtevWla5EeJ_Bwd3_P2Ga18qaqlxRA.QpEUv64v5DEz-lnLBl78knGWvY2u8i5qdklskWl6Qrs&dib_tag=AUTHOR
Dear Guus Thomas, thank you for your feedback. I am happy that my video helped you. I'd be happy to Skype-train with you if you want me to watch your practice at home and offer suggestions. You can contact me through email, via my website (see details below). Also, you can use email to describe any problems you are having with aikido (or career, job hunting, etc.) and I will be happy to offer my suggestions. Wishing you well, Artie.
Dear Paul, thanks for your question and interest. The 9-minute video covers both mae ukemi (forward rolls) and ushiro ukemi (back rolls). If you'd like to do a Skype workout together sometime, please contact me by email through my website and I can see what you're doing and give you feedback. Where are you located (what country)? Time-zone coordination may be a challenge but workable. Or we can chat by email I can also help offer tips. Wishing you well, Artie.
Hi Eran, thanks!. I'm glad you enjoyed this intro to aikido rolls. If you like more information, you may enjoy reading my fitness book, "Get Fit and Stay Fit for Life," which has several chapters and photos on rolls. It's available from Amazon as an eBook and soft cover. All my book royalties go to charity. Also, you can contact me by email via my website. Wishing you well, Artie.
Hi Cherryflavoredacid, thanks for your comment. Make the triangle, either at your toe as mentioned in the video, or at your knee (two hands and knee; moving your hands up from your foot and once they reach the knee, keep the triangle fixed, watching your hands with your head and torso turned). This will help position your upper body to protect your head and neck. If any followup questions, please contact me through my website, artiedot lynnworthdot com (dots are periods, no spaces). Best wishes!
Dear Jeff, thanks for your feedback! My guess is that on your left side you may not be turning your upper torso enough (remember to turn your head and reach across with your arm so that all stays "connected" at your leg and knee). Without torso rotation you likely are heading straight back over your head. Ouch! Please contact me by email through my website and I can offer more suggestions, plus we can arrange a Skype training session together. Best wishes, Artie.
Hello from Greece sensei. Today i had my second aikido lesson but with accident this time.when the time comes for trying role move i did it but when i finished my left shoulder needs service :) so my 115kg press my shoulder and when i will try it again i must do it correct to avoid new accident. for this week i will practice by watching again and again your video..
Hi NatureWatcher, thank you for your comment about back rolls and your interest in forward roll details. Although I don't have this in video, I do go into great detail with the progression for forward rolls in my book, "Get Fit and Stay Fit for Life." It is available on Amazon in eBook and soft cover format, with step-by-step progression enhanced with photos for clarity. If you have additional questions, please feel free to email me through my website shown in the video. Thanks, Artie
Thank you for your feedback Monika. If you want more tips, please contact me via my website email address and we can exchange more detail than the limited space here. Also, my fitness book offers chapters on rolls. Wishing you well, Artie.
Dear Asalimz, thank you for your comment. I hope these roll basics serve you and your students well. If you or they wish to contact me for followup, please do so via my website, Artie(dot)Lynnworth(dot.com) and I'll be happy to respond via email.
Dear Ellen, thanks for your kind words. I hope the video was helpful to you. If you do have any followup questions, please contact me directly at my website and I'll be happy to help further (the same applies to any other video watchers who want more coaching from me). I'm happy to help. Artie.
+Reb L Thank you Reb L. If you want more information about rolls, please consider my Fitness book (with several chapters on rolls) and contacting me via my website so we can do more Q&A. Happy to help. Artie.
Dear Short N Arab, sorry for the late reply. Somehow I did not see your note when you submitted it. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Please share the link with your friends. Check my fitness book for more tips on rolls. Contact me via my website email address for more exchanges back and forth. Artie.
Dea Colin, thanks for your feedback. Let me know if I can be of help with either aikido or life/career tips (see my website and books). Best wishes, Artie
Thanks Artie been doing Ukemi for 34 years myself but i always like to see and encourage others for sharing. I will check your website. maybe you should post some tai-sabaki? Unless you have already? Nice little dojo you have there!! Keep up the great work. Always new aikidoka coming up who need tips.
Colin Morgan Dear Colin, thanks again for your added detail. With your experience, you should be making these videos! For now, the roll video is the only one I have. Thanks for planning to check my website, and please "contact" me by email so we won't be limited to short comments. Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks, Artie. (PS - the "dojo" is on my back deck in Chile, S.A.)
Dear Melodic Rizumu, although I am not currently planning to create a new forward roll video, please contact me via my website for more tips. However, here are several good videos you can search (UA-cam does not allow links in replies). (1) 12-minute video, search "How to learn the basic Ninjutsu rolls" (2) 1.5 minute, search "Aikido Forward Shoulder Roll Instruction" and (3) 10-minute, search "Meeting the Mat" Thank you for your question. Artie.
Hi Dneelyep, glad this helped. Please don't hesitate to let me know if I can be of further help via email tips (you can reach me through my website) and/or Skype workouts together. Enjoy Aikido! Best wishes, Artie.
Hi wishkah256, I appreciate your feedback. Glad you liked this tutorial on rolls. I wish you well with your practice. If you and other viewers ever want to ask more questions, I'm happy to give feedback and more tips. Please go to my website and contact me there and we can email back and forth. All the best, Artie.
Dear Sumomanu, thanks for the feedback. Although I have no immediate plans for more UA-cam videos on rolls, I do welcome questions and can give personal coaching through my website (see below). Please contact me there by email. Happy to help, Artie.
Thx a ton, great video! Just one question, about the position of the back foot in medium backward roll: I was intuitively keeping it like you're showing, with toes supporting the foot, it not being flat on the ground. However, my trainer said that can lead to a strain, if sth goes sideways, so it's better to keep it flat on the ground. So I learned that and no probs, but would care to know what's your take on that?
Hi Leva J., thanks for your note. Sorry for slow reply (was traveling). Please contact me through my website email, so I can add more detail. Here are a few quick comments: 1. Always follow your sensei's advice, 2. If what you're doing works, you can stick with it, however, 3. I always recommend positioning the foot to allow your toes to safely get under your foot and support your body weight, rather than use your instep (top of foot) to support your body weight, which can also cause ankle or foot injury if not done well. Let's exchange more Q&A through email. Wishing you well, Artie
Thank you for your comment, particularly the global perspective. I've enjoyed corresponding with people in several continents via my website, and have even done a live Skype training workout together between Chile and the UK, helping one student suddenly "get it!" Happy to help and coach. Please contact me through my website (see below), Artie.
qwaza man Thanks for your note. You are correct: you should not be rolling on your head. This means you are probably not turning your torso while you pass your leg/knee over your shoulder. If you keep your eyes on your hands and knee, and turn your torso as your leg passes over your shoulder, your head should be out of harm's way. Please contact me through my website and I'll be happy to share more tips to help keep you safe and avoid the head-roll. My fitness book covers this in detail with photos. Wishing you well, Artie.
+qwaza man Thanks for clarifying your comment. Although it may appear that in the rolls on my video that I am rolling on my head, I am not. In fact, the weight of my body is always on my shoulder to hip line, not head and neck. Note the spot in the video (3-minute mark) where I look back and say, "I can see you," you'll see that my weight is on my shoulder, not head. My head is to the side, with no weight or pressure on it. I hope this is clear now. Please contact me through email and we can discuss further. Thanks for watching and sharing. Artie.
Dear Joseph, good luck with your aikido training, and at-home practice with mats. The mats in the video were purchased in Santiago, Chile, but you can find jigsaw puzzle mats in your country (not sure where you are). Here is a typical link: www.ebay.com/itm/Martial-Arts-Jigsaw-Mats-MMA-Wrestling-Gym-Flooring-Interlocking-Floor-Tumbling-/221206776644. I've also used folding mats with very good success from this company: akathletics.com/collections/gymnastics-mats. If questions, please write to me via my website email address to share more information and answer your questions. Share the video with friends. Check my books too. Thanks for your comments. Best wishes, Artie.
A great video. I recently started aikido and this is a great exercise. I am 6'5'' and my rolls were as smooth as a tumbling giraffe. After applying your routine to my workout, I find that my rolls are less impacting and more fluid. Thanks Sensei.
This is the best breakdown and teaching of a back roll! Well done!
+Artie Lynnworth Thank you, so much, Sensay!
Man, you have beaten the japanese :D The way you explain ukemi and divide it into simple mouvements is incredible. This is the art of pedagogy !
Dear Abdullah Barrous, thank you so much for your outstanding comment. I am honored by your review. If I can be of more assistance, please let me know. You can contact me via my webpage. Please share my video with others who you think will benefit. Check my books too on Amazon. Artie
I will, for sure... :)
WTF do you mean 'beaten the Japanese'? The Japanese have never been 'beaten' in over 1000 years.
Putins Cat dude HES just complimenting the guy how easily he explained it with no ease
Best tutorial so far.Such detailed description.
Thank You!!!! I'm starting my first Aikido class and am so intimidated by the tumbles (coordination). Thanks for this.
larkatmic Good luck enjoying and learning aikido. I wish you many safe and productive workouts. You can find more details about rolls in my fitness book (Kindle version or soft cover). Please contact me through my website and we can exchange emails with more details and tips for your success. Artie.
Thanks so much for sharing! Your explanation was very thorough. The way you broke down the movement into simple steps was extremely helpful.
Dear Cat Nguyen, thank you for taking the time to view the video and comment. I enjoy sharing techniques for success, in aikido and for life (see my books on Amazon). Let me know if I can be of further help to you. Contact through email is welcome. Artie.
I just made my first real roll - thanks to your advices! I'll keep in mind your offer of help. My sincerest gratitude, Artie. All the best to you.
Never saw and heard such really worthful, precious and exactly made instructions.
Artie Lynnworth
Dear Mr. Lynworth, Artie. Thank you very much again. Is normal that masters say that they are far from being a master. The truth is that you are a good and wise person.
Thank you very much again,
Adolfo.
Hello There,
Thank you very much to showing your easy Aikido rollings in UA-cam.
Artie Lynnworth Thank you I will do that. Ciao from a Swede in Italy :-)
I agree Artie- the more sources you can pull from the better. It would benefit any Aikidoka to learn as many ways/methods of taking ukemi. You never know how you will get thrown and having multiple ways of taking ukemi will keep you from getting hurt. -
happy training!
thank you artie.sorry for my late delay..im will started at home by practising first basic ground rolls..last week i did my first good ground forward roll...the sensei found it good.. now the rest..im have need this for my 6 kyu exam...thank you..your video really helped.!
Excellent for beginners and for instructors - thank you for taking the time to make this video.
Nice video and explanation. I started practicing Aikido one month ago and I have some difficulty with Ukemi. This video will be very useful. Thanks.
Artie.
13 years old video and still awesome! Thank you!
Thank you! I’ve been having problems with the back roll so much and I’ve learned so much from this :D !! Keep the great work!!
Thank you for this great demonstration of rolls. I'm new to Aikido so this extremely helpful since I'm worried about falling and hurting myself!
Hi Karen, welcome to Aikido and the best of luck in your training. It's good that you're studying, and in particular rolls. Be sure to support on your front arm when doing the forward (mae ukemi) roll. If you want more tips or have more questions, please email me through my website. I wish you well, Artie
Thank you sir, As a beginner i am impressed by your teaching.
Thanks a lot. One of the most usable videos around here.
Hi Artie Lynnworth,
I am new with Aikido and practising these rolling. Thanks so much for this very nice lesson. It helps me to understand how to controll my body better when doing these. Hope you have more basic lessons as this one for white bells like me.
"Triangle between your hands and foot" every aikidoka should learn it this way, thank you!
Hello Artie, thank you for your video, very helpful examples and explanation, it is a pleasure watching and learning from your instructions.
Dear Natik, thank you for your comments. I hope you enjoy practicing your rolls. Check my fitness book too for more information on rolls. I welcome emails too via my website. All the best, Artie.
You are a great instructor. Much respect.
really well explanation. thank you very much :D
hope you make video for other aikido basic move like shikko etc.
Thank you Artie, now I understand the concepts :) Just have to practice much more. Had my first Aikido lesson today. Was so overwhelming...
Many Thanks for this video, I'm just starting aikido this year and it helped me a lot.
Thanks a lot. On the mat I always have trouble with the backwards roll. But the idea of imagining a triangle really should help.
So much appreciation for you, Sensay!
İt's 'Slice the salami' , i bought from kobo yesterday and going well so far.
Excellent demonstration - thank you for providing this resource for beginners like me!
Thanks you sir for the details explanation of the roll. I need to practice more to do it so well as you. Thanks
Thank you, Sensei. I was really struggling with back rolls, and your detailed explanation video really helped it to click for me :).
Best regards
John Haagen Rasmussen
Bornholm, Denmark
Dear John Haagen Rasmussen, thank you so much for your kind words. I am honored to know my video helps, and that through your sharing of the link that others can "like" it and benefit too. I enjoy coaching, mentoring and helping. Please see my website for information about my books, and as a way to contact me directly through email. I wish you and your fellow students well, in aikido and life. Artie.
Excellent video explanation. Makes it all seem achievable even for me.
Super! I just started to learn that movement and I am in trouble 😄. But I will take all the advice and learn.
Absolutely superb kind sir 👊🏾👊🏾💥💥. The Mr. Rogers of Aikido
This tutorial Is so effective!! I commend your teaching Sensei.
This is a really great video - great instruction. Do you have more?
I have the same issue for practicing at home, thanks for sharing this.
Greetings from Brazil
Nice video, Artie. Congrats.
(from Russia :)
The links you put in your video weren't clickable for me, but I still managed to take a look at your website.
Most youtubers put all their twitter, instagrams, facebooks, ALL of that in the description. lol
However, I still don't see your link in the description, though.
Very clear explanation about the ukemis, thank you. Greetings from Argentina
Thank you
Dear Khadijah Joy Sams, you are very welcome.
Fantastic explanation. This will surely help me. Do you have a recommendation for a mat to practice on? I have extremely limited space.
Artie.

Thank you so much! I've always wondered why my backrolls always end too far to the side!
Great intro, thank you!
Wonderful demonstration! Thank you, this is very helpful.
Please, show in details the beginning of the front roll. Other parts are explained great. Thank you.

Fantastic Artie I love your dojo. Mine is in my small flat in london
Artie how do I contact you via email? Not too good with stuff!
Can you do a forward roll video?
It'll help me out a lot!!
This is a great step-by-step instruction! thanks :)
thank you for this tutorial, it has really helped with my Aikido rolls, although I don't think you're supposed to roll on your head...
qwaza man Thanks for your note.
+Artie Lynnworth I meant that you seemed to roll on your head during your demonstration, just saying
Artie.
As a beginner in Aikido, this was a great find. Thanks. Who makes the practice mat you are using?
Artie Lynnworth Thanks for the information and I plan on checking out your book.
