Swimming in the Boiling River with Elk! - Yellowstone National Park - Mammoth Campground

Our hike to the Boiling River from Mammoth Campground turned into an adventure with elk! After diverting from the path to avoid an aggressive bull elk and a herd, we find ourselves in the Boiling River. As we enjoy the hot water swimming, a mama and calf elk enter the water!
Boiling River is near the north entrance of Yellowstone National Park and is one of the very few legal thermal soaking areas in the park. Here, the cold water of the Gardner river mixes with the hydrothermal water to create a warm water swimming environment. While it is safe (and fun!) for kids, families should be wary of the slippery rocks, swift current and legal seasonal hours of operation for swimming. Visitors should also be mindful of wildlife, which as we find out, are very abundant in the area.
