Yellowstone National Park Flyfishing (Part 1), "THE GARDINER RIVER", Oct. 2019

  • Brownies, Rainbows and Cutthroats were hitting on the Gardiner pretty consistently. Temps were cold, every morning in the 20s, eventually topping off in the upper 30s for the first several days. And boy, was it windy! But we had an absolute ball on the Gardiner, more of a stream than a river, and being close to geysers helped keep the water temps just right to keep the fish feeding. if you ever get up to the northeast entrance of the park in the town of Gardiner, please stop into Park's Fly Shop, check out their tackle and flies, plus they have all the information you'll need to fly fish in Yellowstone Park.

    Had a big bull elk come rt up to me through long grass while on the Gardiner this September in the smoke. I was a little nervous but he social distanced and fed behind me for almost an hr. Love fishing out there! Slough and Soda Butte my preferences tho. Great video!

      Thank you Jim! We wanted to hit those two streams but guide said that year they were colder than the other streams, probably not feeding that good there. Actually did fish Slough but not a single hit for 2-3 hours, so went back to the Gardiner. I fished the Big Mo’ back in the 80s and 90s before it got really popular, just crushed it for 10+ years. My dad lived in Great Falls and had a cabin up the river, great fishing right out the door. The good old days. Appreciate you watching and commenting.

      Big O Well, hello! Nice to hear from you. We’re back already, two more short videos coming out on the Firehole and the Yellowstone, but boy the wind was the culprit for the second half of our trip. Super hard to find a section of water that was blocked from the wind and was good fishable water. Stay tuned in for those videos. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Scott- How far out of the park were you? or were you in the park? I've been there about 5-6 times fishing the Gibbon and the Slough and Yellowstone. Next time , definitely fishing the Gardner. Just a story--last time I went I fished the sulphur cauldron and broke the sole one of my boots; went to Park's in Gardner-bought a pair of boots and found out the salesman-guide was from my home town back East. Great trip. Love your videos.

      Chasingbowsnbrowns 365 Hi Bud! Thank you very much. Honestly, I didn’t tye any extra flies for this trip. I used the Isonychia, Golden Stone, pheasant tail, Hares Ear soft hackle, and other regular flies, I did have some extra streamers with me but that was it. Well, on the last day, a guy gave us a perdigon black midge Pupa with a silver bead and a green tinsel rib, worked excellent on the Gallatin. Most common flies usually will work coast to coast. Definitely worth the trip, but gotta day, we do have comparable fishing on the Little J, Penns and the Delaware River systems. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Too concerned with the greatness of the place I'm sure. Maybe I'll go next year, but I want a armed guide with me. No joke. Two guys were killed when I was there. Bucket list of places to fly fish. I was there 2 years ago in June and it was snowing, but guys fishing on the Madison River entering Yellowstone from West Yellowstone, MT entrance.
    Gardener would be the due North entrance above Monmouth Springs. We went to Boiling River (Just south of town of Gardiner,MT) that flows into the Gardiner river. Where were you on the Gardiner River. Its a long river?

As far as traveling to different water, yes, Pennsylvania has a lot of great trout fishing waters, try to plan ahead just for a couple streams each year. I see you had a guide for the first segment of your video, you guys really put his butt to work. As usual I really enjoyed the video, of course our streams have been really down for some weeks now, but the rains from last week and yesterday got them up to a more fishable condition. WildBlue Discovery Yo yo Craig! What up! Weather wise, we timed it awful. Cold front came in several days earlier, turned the bite off, thankfully we had the geysers to warm up the stream a little. The Gardiner, Firehole and the Madison had feeding fish but the others we fished were really tough, water was ice cold. But we managed to still have a great trip. On the Gallatin, fish didn’t start feeding until 1pm, but once I figured them out, it was game on! Thanks for watching and your support.

    Great stuff as usual Scott. Thanks for sharing. Gentle piece of feedback - calling out the length of every fish you land gets a little old and is distracting, if that's your deal maybe add a 20 inch length of plastic measuring tape to your gear, let the viewer see for themselves. A few years back I committed to taping every single fish I landed. I think you'd be very surprised and learn a lot... Either way, you're the man.

    • @pawoodsnwater7551
      @pawoodsnwater7551  5 років тому

      Karlin Bilcher Thanks Karlin for your feedback. I actually did that with two of my rods years back in 5” increments from 15 to 25 inches. Don’t use those rods anymore but I was very accurate with my guestimates, within an inch consistently, so I didn’t continue with the newer rods, but I hear ya’ , like you said guess it’s just what I do , sorry if it distracting, gonna be a tough habit to break, try to focus more on the big boys. I appreciate your comment. Thanks for watching.
