    Come along with me as I take two flights in a SF-50 Vision Jet from Nashville, TN to Owensboro, KY and back. I visited MidAmerica Jet to have an avionics feature activated.
    The service involved activating a feature within the transponder to allow the plane to be flown with either a callsign or tail number, depending upon the nature of the flight. As a volunteer pilot, I fly under callsign Compassion 1086 (CMF1086), Angel Flight 1086 (NGF1086), or Hero Flight 122 (HRF122). I also have a callsign issued by ForeFlight (FFL585).
    Check out www.midamericajet.com and www.moonlite.com if you are heading to Owensboro, KY.

    Good on you for hand flying. It’s such a lost art. Modern day pilots are programmers and rely way too heavily on automation and don’t keep the raw skills in practice.

    So Don, what's an accurate operating cost estimate for an SF50 per year? Thanks.

    • @DonAv8s
      @DonAv8s  Рік тому +3

      Thanks for the question. There are variable costs to consider that may vary but predictably the costs are probably about $1100 an hour based upon 150 hours of flying per year. Including aircraft program, fuel, hangar and insurance.

    • @ictpilot
      @ictpilot Рік тому +1

      @@DonAv8s Sorry Don. I meant direct operating cost. I've heard a rule of thumb is whatever the factory puts out add at least ten to fifteen percent more to get a more accurate picture.

    • @DonAv8s
      @DonAv8s  Рік тому +4

      @@ictpilot Most of us use $1100 per hour as the operating cost. Program and fuel costs are predicable. Insurance, hangar and airport fees are variable. $1100 per hour works if you’re flying 150 hours a year. Operating cost for G1 is more than G2 since hourly program costs are a little higher for G1 jets

    • @ictpilot
      @ictpilot Рік тому +2

      @@DonAv8s I'm surprised it's more for the G1 than G2. Usually the newer versions cost more per hour. And things like fuel and maintenance should be variable, hanger and insurance should be fixed for the most part. But 1100 an hour sounds like it should be a pretty good figure. Have you looked at a TBM for your missions? Speed, payload, etc. would be as good or better, and half the fuel burn. Just the cabin not as roomy.

    • @DonAv8s
      @DonAv8s  Рік тому +2

      @@ictpilot Older planes require more maintenance, thus higher program costs. You need to understand SF50 has a comprehensive program for subscriptions, maintenance, and recurrent training built into the hourly program cost, which is prepaid every one to two years.
      I used to like TMB and don’t find them uncomfortable up front and cramped in the cabin. I have flown TBMs. Great performance but expensive to own if not covered for factory maintenance.

    I've wondered if you can put a secured medical flight gurney in place of rear seats for a passenger that needs completely reclined in travel!

    • @DonAv8s
      @DonAv8s  Рік тому +2

      Thanks for the inquiry, but policies require patients to be ambulatory for safety reasons. They must be able to evacuate the plane under their own power. These are not critical care or air ambulance flights. These flights are merely in place of ground transportation due to distance.

    I love all your amazing Vision Jet videos. They are pure gold for every SF50 sim flyer. But I have a question about the realistic descend rate in FLC mode? The descend rate in MSFS 2020 is more like an emergency descent with up to 4500 feet. Thats why I never use FLC on an approach. Instead of this I use a rate of descent between 1500 - 2000 fpm. Kind regards from Germany.

    • @DonAv8s
      @DonAv8s  Рік тому +6

      Thanks for watching. The simple way to think of it is to climb in FLC and descend in VS. A 1000-1500 FPM decent is a normal profile for VJ. Once you are established on a glide path (normally around 3.0 to 3.7 degrees) then 500-600 FPM is typical. Thank you for your comments and the question.

    The airlines teach take half the gust and add it to your ref speed, up to 10kts. Then slow to ref over the threshold.

    • @DonAv8s
      @DonAv8s  Рік тому

      It’s pretty similar to Vision Jet profiles. Vref if standard threshold speed but we carry 50% of the gust factor into the landing since it’s a light aircraft and you typically account for the gust even at touchdown.

      Hi John. It’s the same in SF50 but the technique used in the jet is to use the AP button on the mode controller, not the button on the side stick so you do no lose the flight director on approaches. Even when flying visual approaches.

    • @johnbender6042
      @johnbender6042 Рік тому

      Very true on the FD. By the time I turn off the AP I usually don’t use the flight director but it does take that away.

    You landed non precision landing. But why didn't you turn off the FD? Is the reliability of the Garmin's GP mode high? Or is it a personal habit?

      Thank you for watching. The flight director or command bars are typically reliable if programmed correct or coupled on an approach. At some point I transition to a visual landing.

      @@띠용-r2h9x I should mention that there are several ways to disconnect the auto pilot and hide the flight director.
      If you press the auto pilot disconnect on the side stick, then autopilot disconnects and command bars hide. If you press the autopilot (AP) button on the mode controller, then autopilot disconnects but command bars are still visible. I generally disconnect autopilot from the AP button on the mode controller so I can use the flight director until transitioning to a visual landing.
