12" Chop saw upgrade. Making an old saw better.

- I've had this old chop saw for over 20 years. It keeps on working. There has been an influx on newer saws that use metal cutting blades. Those saws can be quite expensive. I found a way to make my old saw perform close to the new ones. Adding a Diablo blade, and speed control worked wonders.

To do it properly You need a variable frequency drive a ''VFD'' who chance frequency instead of voltage your motor underfeed with voltage will warm up and burn its winding ! It's a simple electric law if you lower the voltage the amperage goes up ! VFD are used everywhere safely in industrial environment ! Just try to cut for half an hour non stop and watch your motor smoking ! these fan controller are ok for a ceiling fan with a small motor no more than 3-4 amps and the fan rotation does cool down their slightly overheating small motors ! And these chop saw some are rated 13 amps and others 15 amps and on startup pull near 18 amps for a few seconds !
@osw719 you are absolutely correct. This is like putting the car in high gear, and Beasley stepping on the gas to go 20 mph. Where in reality you need to put the car in first gear and step on it to go 20 mph. The power fed into the saw is a little enough over what is needed to turn the blade. I applaud his attempt, but I’m hating the UA-cam engineers.
its the difference between a brushed motor, in which you can reduce the voltage with an scr (light dimmer switch,which this little box is doing) this will reduce the power(and speed) versus induction motor (which this is not) and that can have the speed regulated with a VFD and still maintain most of the power

You could run 60hz 400hz or straight dc, if the voltage is the same it will spin tbe same speed...
@@5002strokeforever you are so right...with a brushed motor, unfortunately limiting the voltage also limits the power, so at low speeds there is very little power, with ac we usually control voltage with an SCR which reduces the voltage but also reduces the power. If it was an induction motor you can reduce the speed with frequency and maintain most of the torque.
So if we have an 14" bauer abrasive chop saw from harbor freight do i need to buy a vfd to slow it down because i bought one of the speed controller like u have and the fuse keeps blowing. So what do i need to slow the saw speed down for a metal blade

Dang Barry I wish I'd seen this 4 months back I had a GMC chop saw and always had to square up the cuts because of the blade flexing what you showed would have saved me $300 on a new chop saw good info for anyone that still has one of these thumbs up 👍.

I think you should check the power going to the tool, if the variable speed box is just changing the voltage and not the Hz it will damage the motor, in order for the speed to change it must reduce the frequency of the voltage along with the potential.

exactly it's because miter saw use a universal motor which is great at spinning fast with reasonable torque. but not even a professional variac you will still burn up the motor. I also don't quite understand Jim's remark if he's being an ass or just kidding around but if i were going to ruin one of my tools i would be thankful to someone warning me

They make that still demon blade also for a 7 1/4" circular saw too. But the great thing about it is you don't have to do nothing but put it on the saw and go. Its designed to run at the rpms that the circular saws run at. And they make a a 4 1/2" metal cutting disk for an a 4 1/2" angle grinder that is diamond plated that works pretty good. It last really long but is slower than a regular cut off disk. It runs about $14 or so. But they last really long.
I tried that combo but the rpm of the saw was too high and it warped the blade. Like the video says, the rpm is very important.

Don’t do it like this man. That switch isn’t what you want for this application. It’s going to kill that motor in real short order. There’s a reason why all these saws don’t ship with a switch like it.

The problem is that they are more expensive than an entire chop saw.
He always does what I do with all my instructions pick it up and pretty much a set it aside
I like the speed controller. Unfortunately for all the reasons you said I got rid of mine before I was aware of them. I looked at using the blade and realised the blade speed had to be slower. I cut a lot of hollow tube for pedal buggys/go karts. I think you may have lost some power as the speed controllers are usually potentiometers and reduce the power to slow the speed. It probably won't become apparent unless you cut thick flat bar or heavy angle. However as its blade speed that has to be slowed for safety I would arrange something that will allow you to keep the speed controller within easy reach so that if the saw slows you can increase the speed back. Its only the same as the modern routers do internally to compensate for load. It's also very useful for softer metals that would normally clog the grinding wheel. Also plastic so you can keep a chop saw in good condition for wood only.
I had the same HF cutoff saw for 20+ years. Served me well and tough as hell. I ended up selling it after getting a horizontal bandsaw. Your hack will work for light duty work making an occasional cut but as others have noted this technically is the incorrect solution for slowing the speed down. It needs to be done with reduction gearing.
What you got will work but will overheat the motor quick. Still i like the thinking and if it does burn up oh well. 🙂

Just learning about Diablo blades those things are the shit they blow my mind I put one on my little cordless 7 1/2 inch saw I cut the shit out of mild steel all day long and the blade looks brand new it’s crazy the technology they have now the ceramic carbide teeth are indestructible
The 7 1/4” steel demon blades can handle up to 5800rpm so there’s no need to reduce speed, you can even use them on a mitre saw
Not the 12 inch blades, bigger diameter means higher surface speed on the edge of the blade, and they do not work well at high speed (not as much torque, and heats up the blade too much)

Do not do it. The speed is too high and the blade will not survive. A blade should not produce sparks
I know it’s been 3 years but this video is great. I was hoping to find such a video. Just getting into metal work at the house and was going to get an abrasive saw (affordable option).. can’t afford the dry cut saws. I’ll definitely be trying this out myself.

Various people have considered this but if you slow the motor down electrically it loses torque. What you need is a 2:1 mechanical reduction.

the new blade is great, just take in mind, like a bench saw some steel might have some "harder" impurities... and them teeth might go flying of and about... always keep that iron guard on... or u might get shanked.

I bought an evolution years ago for the knife Shop when they first came out. I am cutting High Speed Jet Turban Steel. I didn't care for the combo wood/steel blade as it has a lower quality carbide in the tips. In ordered two of their blades designed or stainless steel. and has a very High Tech Ceramic Carbide for he teeth. You do need t use caution and start the cut gently not to shock the teeth. I I use only 154-cmp steel. Very abrasion resistant. I have neve needed to change out he blade from the first stainless steel cutting blade. There a few ,(very few, chipped teeth, yet it cuts as new.
The Evolution SS blades are expensive, but miles beyond others out there. I have on a few occasions had to cut fully hardened steel and the blade didn't seem to know the difference. Worried the hell out of me as these blades are expensive, yet no damage was done in the cutting.

AvE did a video trying to do what you did and the issue he had was it kept popping the breaker but you don't seem to have that problem at all! Would love to see a follow-up video after a bunch of cuts to see how it holds up. I just can't bring myself to pay the price of the evo saw when it's basically the same thing!!

great idea !!!!
i considered doing the same thing because i have one of those rheostats on my blast cabinet for the vacuum. decided against it because i don't know enough about electric motors but i figured less electricity would also limit the saw's power/torque for cutting. so i ended up dropping a few hundred on a metal chop saw. learning experience i guess.
Barry I have been on the fence about doing the very same thing with my chop saw. I hate the fibrous wheels and the glide in the cut especially with angle iron. I am definitely going to purchase the blade you used and I am sure I will find a link in your store. Thanks once again.

I bought my evolution cold saw with a blade for 180$ at home depot. Very much worth the investment, byr don't ever try to cut hardened steel with it- point is you still need an abrasive saw for that stuff
Which model did you buy? I found the Rage 4 at Home Depot but it's rated at 4,200 RPM. I would have to go with the 355 or 380 to get 1450 RPM.

I was curious about the cutting speed so I calculated it out. Your saw at 3800 rpms at the shaft and a 12' blade, the cutting speed is just shy of 4000 rpms. If your reduce the speed to 1700 rpms the cutting speed is ~ 1780 rpms. This is based on no load calculations. Not sure you wanted this much information, I was just curious. Your rule of speed setting to about half of the base speed through the fan controller is very close. Thanks for the video.

I have an Evolution "RAGE3" compound miter say which I love for steel, aluminum, and wood, but its blade is wearing out. I checked the Amazon feedback section and they are widely differing blade life figures posted. As high as "hundreds of steel cuts" and as low as four or five cuts. How much does technique matter in the blade life numbers? Does a fast vs. slow cut help? Does a little cutting oil help? I'll probably buy one anyway, but I'd like it to last at least a year or two of hobbyist usage.
Technique and speed make a huge difference. A slower cut keeps the heat down, and prolongs the blade. Can't say if oil would help or not. Let the blade make the cut rather than forcing it through.
Evolution blades wear out quick for a cold cutting saw. That's all i hear about is how they suck.

Hey man I need to cut two things I need to cut wood for a shed project and I also need to cut a trailer coupler witch is 1/4 thick I'd like to buy a saw that can handle wood and thick hard metal my budget is a big deal so I'd like to know what saw should I buy to cut metal and 2x4s ? I don't mind buying multiple blades and 1 saw I want a saw that will cut the metal perfectly.

I use a kobalt 71/4 saw with matching blade. It's good. Ots under 5500rpm so it matches
The RPM limits for the circular saw versions of these Diablo blades (about 7 inch) are compatible with some wood-cutting miter saws. The arbor diameters are also compatible in some cases, so you may be able to simply swap the wood blade for one of these Diablos. No speed control would be necessary. I've done that on steel and stainless steel (thin wall tube) and had excellent cut quality. I can't say much yet about blade life though.

Its all fun and games until you trash the motor. A fan has a constant load. Chop saws do not. As some others have pointed out, this "speed control" device wasn't meant for industrial apps like a saw. For very occasional use, on light duty stuff, enjoy. The minute you load that motor with some serious cuts on something thick, you will let the smoke out. Same thing happens with router speed controllers.

You don’t need to slow the saw down, just buy a blade with the correct speed rating.

I did have a fuse blow when I tried to cut an extremely hard piece of steel. Mild steel? No issues.

It worked fine but has its limitations. I actually received a saw from evolution power tools that I now use.
@@jodaddysworkshop786 I have one of their sidewinder style saws now, it's pretty handy, but you better have the faceshield on.
Your saw will burn up soon. Your limiting voltage to slow it down and that is not good for your motor. Not criticism, just trying to help.
