  • Byker, Newcastle upon Tyne. Presentation by Gerry Kemp
From extensive first-hand experience, landscape architect Gerry Kemp provides a detailed history of the redevelopment of Byker, in Newcastle upon Tyne, from grim, Victorian terraces to modern, airy and accessible housing estate. Designed by Ralph Erskine and his practice (1968-1982), with an ambition to not only rehouse the existing community in good quality and attractive housing but also to achieve this through a pioneering approach in public participation.
The result was architecturally very distinctive (Historic England listed grade II*, 2007), the new estate sought to create new standards of social housing, in terms of both accommodation and in provision of outside space which could serve the whole community. The role of that community has been crucial from the very beginning, both in the original design of the estate and subsequent management.
