I, too, love hearing why people buy what they do in their seed haul. I learn a lot and even add to my orders.

Ok, I’m not alone with an overwhelming compulsion to buy more seeds. ❤

I have enjoyed watching you this weekend. I am binging on soil blocks, natives, stratification, seed organization - you name it. I probably should go on vacation! I grow tropical milkweed purposely because I like how it looks. However, when my native milkweed starts to look ratty, I cut the tropical to the ground. It does not have enough time to rebound (zone 8) Va Beach area. Sometimes it returns the following spring sometimes it doesn't.

Thank you so much! Regenerative Gardening has some great soil blocking videos. My very close family is in VA Beach!

Thanks for the tips! I use dilute hydrogen peroxide a lot when misting my seedlings if anything gets moldy, that really helps -- I think I got the tip from a channel where people were growing microgreens. They basically used it as an all around preventative antimicrobial. It's probably also sending some other signal to the seed, maybe giving it an oxygen boost as it breaks down and softening the seed coat? Not sure.

That sounds like great explanation! I use it all around during the indoor seed sowing time. Thanks, Harley@

Hi Michelle, I love the detailed instructions on yor channel. I am experimenting with stratifiyng tulip seeds. I have a rare tulip (tulipa sprengerii) and have collected its seeds. How would you proceed with stratifying (how long and when) planting? Also my question, what concentration is the H2O2 which you use for dilution with water for the filter paper? Here in Switzerland we have 3% for medicinal purposes. Thanks in advance for your tipps, Monika 😊

In Michigan, it’s so hard to buy native trees and shrubs. Places that do, are always out of stock. The last few years I have been winter sowing seeds. I can get about 25% of seedlings to transfer into gardens. Could you show the progress of your seeds once germinate and grow?

Will do! Most of the perennial natives I have gown from seed and all of the hypericum prolificum and new jersey tea bushes. I've grown a lot of the elderberry from seed, but now I just cut as many cuttings as I want in the winter and stick them in the ground (that applies to grey dogwood too). Virginia Sweetspire you can take cuttings and also dig up new sprouts since it spreads. This past fall I took some cuttings of dwarf fothergilla and potted them. I put some seeds from my first pawpaw harvest (3 fruits ;)) and I will let you know if they sprout this spring. I believe I did that with some oaks too.

Hi Michelle! Thanks for sharing your experience with us! I know you have said you love Shrubby St. Johns Wort (Hypericum prolificum) and I was wondering how you sprout it... I have read it does not require cold stratification, but I was wondering what you do!

Hi Christi! Yes, that is definitely one of my favorites. I just sow the seeds in deep cell flats in the late fall or anytime now. The seeds are tiny so I don't sow heavily and they need light to germinate. If I remember correctly they will sprout early and grow very slow. Another Hypericum I grow that is not a shrub is Hypericum Punctatum/Dotted St Johns Wort. Its a great filler in the garden beds.

Love your channel, very informative. Not many folks in the south doing natives on youtube, I am in SC. Anyway, I have a question. I buy all my seeds at Prairie Moon as well, which is located in Minnesota. Everything I grow ends up covered in aphids. Really I do not care about aphids and leave them alone. However, when I take a hike and come across some butterfly weed growing wild, they have few to no aphids. Could it be that the Minnesota version does not have the defensive mechanism that our wild growing versions have? I am trying to find local dealers but have found none that supply local seed. Also, I have found with butterfly weed, you do not even need to keep them moist. With black-eyed susan, purple coneflower and butterfly weed, I am getting close to 100% germination with just putting the entire package into fridge for 30-60 days. Anyway, Thanks!

I have had good success controlling fungus gnats using a Mosquito Bits tea. Have you tried that? I just did a video on my native seed haul (so far) ua-cam.com/video/6ByZYsziBpM/v-deo.html - there are a couple more that I want to get, too. It's so hard to stop! LOL

Great tips! Thank you! I've been experimenting a lot this winter because last year my winter sowing failed. Epic fail. LOL! So this go around I'm trying many different methods.

@@ninetypercentnative I think I used bad soil last year. I don't think it was a container issue. I think my soil mix I put together was bad. Using two different potting mixes this year instead of my last year mix: happy frog potting soil and also using seed starting mix. I'm curious to see which works best for me. I used to do the seed starting mix years ago before I really fully got into native plant gardening, but was trying to move away from it, but we will see...
