Calling Red Velvet a transitional group really annoys me. Why do I always feel like the are a constantly overlooked group. They have their own style and talent that make them unique. Why must they sound like someone else?
I agree. The people in this channel are all very anti RV. They're always calling them overrated & weak etc. etc. while simultaneously praising weaker vocalists than them.
@@yejiponytail1897 every fandom acts like that. Even for the groups who have no talented members. And they're all talented. Just not to the same level like every group. 🥴
This is why I wish more groups had multiple main vocalists rather than just multiple lead/sub-vocalists. I feel like it would be better for the main vocalists to have each other to lean on (because what if one of them gets sick, gets overworked etc.). I will admit Im biased, though, I do prefer groups who have multiple members that are/can be main vocalists. Maybe Im wrong but its something I wish to see more in the future...
I agree! It's interesting to note that SM bgs often has multiple main vocalists (SuJu, Shinee, EXO, and NCT) while their ggs usually has 1 or 2 only. But the reason could also be that their bgs has way more members which allows for multiple main vocalists whereas their ggs usually has less members, SNSD being the odd one out
@@glaciemdracoi think multiple members can only be categorized as main vocalist if only the gap isnt that BIG. Like suju trio, or exo trio. Snsd taeyeon and jessica (debut era) Otherwise, its kinda pointless because they might not even cover the other main vocalist’ parts properly and sound as good.
You mentioned warm, neutral, and cool voices in passing. I'd love to see a video break down what those qualities mean along with singers who fit those qualities.
SM is always associated with good vocals, and thankfully they have kept that identity so far, even with the change in management. I am drawn to SM since vocal is my 1st priority when it comes to an idol.
Stop the Luna erasure! 😢 People hardly talk about f(x) when they talk about SM, but they were with the company for what? 10 years? And put out so much amazing music. I’d love to see a vocal comparison that includes Luna with the top SM female vocalists. She came from a family of classical vocalists but ended up taking the pop route herself. Her voice is amazing!
There is a video he made of SM female main vocalists with Luna, Wendy, Taeyeon and Ningning. You can watch that anytime, don't worry Luna is the top in that ranking. As for now Luna isn't an active idol, her group has unofficially disbanded and she's nomore in SM. So there's that.
Kind of contradictory to say this for SNSD as aside from their reunion they only have had solo stuff, same as the grace, SES, and f(x). Hence, the asking for an expanded part 2 as a suggestion. Still appreciate all the work this UA-camr does in his busy schedule, but also fair to express regret at only seeing 3 SM girl groups.
Tbh SM 2nd gen vocalists are unbeatable. Imagine 2nd gen has Kyuhyun and Lina who are considered as the most powerful male and female Kpop vocalists in the entire Kpop. And aside from them, Luna, Ryeowook, Jonghyun and Taeyeon are also from the same gen. Crazy fact that if we rank top 10 best vocalist in Kpop, 2nd gen Kpop singers will gonna dominate the list. SM BEST GEN VOCALISTS: 2ND GEN >3RD GEN>1ST GEN>4TH GEN/5TH GEN
Kyuhyun or Lina's level is hard to surpass. The last gen that who can catch up at least is 3rd gen which Exo's gen. At least 3rd gen has ChenBaeksoo, Wendy and Eunkwang.
@@D.Ogodsz Yonnghyun and haeri are better vocalist than lina and in 3rd generation if you look in nugu groups they are very powerful. Vocalist like uji and dia are powerful and they both are better than wendy.
@@JirmanDaniga younghuen is from big mama . It's an yg group both younghyun and lina are great vocalist. I thought Haeri was better but I will do more research. Sorry but there was mistake in the name of younghyun in original comment
One of the ironies about SNSD is Sunny. She definitely had a tone unlike no one else in Kpop and her voice is unmistakable. Yet she never liked the way she sang in SNSD. During a TV show she told the interviewer that SM didn't like the way she sounded naturally and pushed her to sing that style - she called herself SNSD's MSG - the one that added that certain something. That explains why she never chose to release solo material because of the philosophical differences between SM and herself.
All SM girlgroups are very good singers, even the ones not mentioned here. As a reveluv I'm just glad Red Velvet has a variety of tones and even vocal styles to sing different genres, harmonise and sing in unison so seamlessly. Wendy is very all rounded as a main vocal, Seulgi and Joy are greatvas lead vocals, Irene and Yeri have improved & can hold their own & sing confidently & comfortably their parts. I just hope they're given more chances to sing live and promoted better now.❤
I like every SM girl groups vocals but if I had to pick one girl group from SM whose vocals I prefer the most, it would be Aespa. The differences in their vocal tones are what I like the most and I really appreciate it when you can tell which members are singing. It's kind of like Dreamcatcher in that sense as I've always felt that the members of Dreamcatcher all have distinct tones. Both groups also sound well together.
All of them are such queens! I'm so proud of Wendy because she really stood her ground against many competent female vocalists of 3rd gen. And though people might think she's overrated, she literally is the one that allowed RV to be known as a vocal group, and why people sometimes overrate RV as a group compared to other groups who are actually "vocal groups" (multiple competent vocalists). Even though she doesnt have the punchy and overwhelming sound while belting, I really love her tone and well-roundedness in all her registers and also the emotions she puts into her singing. I hope she gets to do another musical soon🥰
It amazed me that someone would think Wendy is overrated. That's why I keep saying lately how much of a joke kpop is. How could they not recognize such an amazing voice but hype up all these Minnie Mouse sounding vocalists instead? 😂😂😂
A lot of snsd "fans" love to weirdly downplay how important Taeyeon's voice was to snsd's sound. They love to say Jessica and Seohyun carried the sound more when multiple members of snsd have talked about feeling sorry that Taeyeon was doing so much heavy lifting in the vocals. Thumbs up to Jessica and hyoyeon for contributing to harmonies and background vocals in the studio along with Taeyeon but we all know it was Taeyeon doing the heavy lifting during live stages.
Lmao this. They be goin around saying like the backbone of SNSD vocals is Jessica or Seohyun in harmonisation without fully understanding what the meaning of backbone. It’s literally the foundation of something which in SNSD song is Taeyeon’s vocal. Take Taeyeon out of SNSD, their sound will crumble down. Jessica alone cant carry SNSD they way Taeyeon does. That’s why even after her departure, SNSD songs is still surviving despite sounding bit different cuz Taeyeon is still there carrying it backed by the lead vocalist.
@@AoDk673 THIS! like, yes, jessica and seohyun do more harmonisation but taeyeon's voice is the life of the sound in the group. she IS the backbone. while harmonisation gives the song more "taste" but without a good main ingredient that is taeyeon, it wouldn't sound good. all in all, they have their own role in the group that makes their songs are good.
This video lost me at the Red Velvet section. IMO, the transition from SNSD to RV is prioritizing different vocal tones which we see in RV. That's what makes Seulgi and Joy stand out as vocalists - technique and a unique tone. Yes, Wendy pushes RV above most groups vocally, but Seulgi and Joy's vocals are also a big part of their sound. Not transitional at all.
And out of the three groups in this video, I think RV has the most dynamic discography. Their R&B is stellar. Every album has its own mood and flow. This video started off with great praise for SNSD, skimmed over RV (at least he didn’t trash Yeri and Irene too much), and then he didn’t even give Karina the time of day. Maybe his studies kept him from doing a better analysis. 🙏🏾🤷🏽♂️ One more thing. He’s praised Seulgi in the past saying she would be the main vocalist in any other girl group. But recently, he basically considers her a tagalong to Wendy. But I digress…..
@@jimm.6542 I think this video was just about vocals so I didn’t mind skipping over commenting on discography. On that note though, I agree that RV’s discography is miles ahead of the other two groups. Aespa has so much potential but I’m convinced their A&R team sucks because how do they have such great title tracks but such average bsides apart from the Savage album?
@@forthemusic2037 I know he’s a technical critic. But he has his biases too. And I’m a staunch RV admirer. So I don’t take any disses well. In a different video he picked Jisoo over Seulgi. Good grief! RV will always be the queens of the B-Sides. No skips. Just push play.
1). Jessica’s voice was the main harmonies in SNSD’s chorus. Of course like you said, Sica & Tae have similar timbre’s, so it can be hard to hear. But you can compare the difference to their old and new sound of the same songs after Sica left the group. Especially in their Japanese tracks. 2). F(X) definitely deserves more respect and recognition in the kpop industry. That’s all imma say on that.
After Sica left, the group never sang the chorus again. Her voice adds a special color and balance to the chorus. You are right about the second one. The girls deserve better. Their talents were completely wasted. When I got into f(x), I was extremely surprised by their vocals, especially Krystal and Amber. They are literally the mothers of 4 gen.
Would love an analysis that rather than focusing on main vocalist and their quality and technique, shows the potential the entire group has to make good armonies, and good excecuted vocal lines, and add different textures. I believe each one of these groups have their own sound vocally because of this and their richness comes beyond their main vocals...
I never thought that Taeyeon and Jessica have similar voices and style. All along and until now, I think they have a very contrasting voices, Style and color. Taeyeon has a powerful / fiercing voice while Jessica has a sweet voice. I actually like how their contrasting voice harmonise so well. SME has been known as a powerhouse of kpop vocalist. And I'm glad that they are able to keep this image until now, but to me if we will compare the current SME vocalist (even with the boy group) to the previous generations, I would say that there was a "downgrade". Like if Ningning will be rank together with Snsd she wouldn't be a main vocalist but be a lead vocal. Even Winter. But if Wendy will be put in Snsd she will be able to keep being one of the main vocalists. Ningning might be the main vocalist of easpa but she isn't as powerful (like Taeyeon), nor can she cover wider range (like Wendy) and often times she isn't stable. Winter on the other hand is more stable than Ningning but she has a tendency to go sharp and sometimes sounds throaty when doing highnotes. She reminds me Tiffany of Snsd but I'd say an improved version.
Well it's not that hard to admit that Aespa 2 Main Vocalist isn't the Main Vocalist level we expect from before. The quality and technique wise is so limited to what we've used before. I'd say what do i expect to Jang Jinyoung as their vocal teacher who changes Wendy's orignal vocal tone, not fixing Seulgi's unstable belts, Ningning's bigger vocals alter to Bada's whinny vocal technique and letting Winter incling to more nasal sound and shrieking belts.
I'm so glad that you recognized Winter as a main vocalist. I've always considered Winter and Ningning as both mains, while Karina and Giselle are both lead vocalists. I guess I just don't see any sub vocalist within Aespa. If you ever decide to remake this topic/vid, the rest of SM's girl groups are quite good specimens for analyzing SM's history of girl groups. Although I understand why you might have limited your choice to these 3 groups.
With the way how SM often giving her not only prominent singing lines and belts it is impossible not to consider Winter as Main Vocalist in Aespa. Althought in my own opinion both her and Ningning still consider Lead Vocalist level with the way how powerful and dominant Taeyeon, Jessica and Wendy in their generation.
@@LLA-lr8kw That's a personal opinion, not an objective fact. And even then, Amber and Krystal are definitely not better than Seulgi (which you MeUs always leave out for some reason, I wonder why...). Luna is the only remarkable singer of f(x) and the only one who deserves an analysis, which this youtube channel already did anyway.
@@shensee9348 Yes, Seulgi is better than Amber and Krystal. The thing is Irene and Yeri haven't improved very much from their debut. (Sorry, I'm not an English speaker). Even they have a better idol career and chances than f(x). Due to my limited English knowledge, I can't explain how I feel it. I'm a very new SM stan and after hearing f(x)'s albums, especially their slow songs, I always wondered why SM didn't give them RV like songs. Sulli could be the Teamin of f(x). Victoria has improved a lot or she always on that level and SM didn't give a chance to sing. Also, I haven't seen Yeri's or Irene's solo or duet performance in SM town concerts (except Monster) but Victoria and Sulli have. I'm not comparing but I'm telling that SM didn't give f(x) chances to show their vocals like RV, SNSD or aespa. If you really carefully analyse f(x)'s songs, performances, you can definitely say how good they are. And specially should watch Amber's and Victoria's recent performances in China.
@@LLA-lr8kw That's the difference between you and me. I'm not a SM stan, I don't care for any SM artist outside of Red Velvet and Tiffany. I'm just tired of people like you always shading Red Velvet and then acting innocent about it. It's hypocritical for any MeU to complain that Irene and Yeri haven't improved when Sulli, Victoria and Amber have similar vocal skillset. And it's not me saying this but people who have an actual background in vocal pedagogy instead of influencers and fans who rely on vibes and personal biases. It's not that SM didn't give any opportunity for f(x) to showcase vocals. As much as I dislike SM as a company, their producers have ears and can recognize vocal talent/potential. They just knew that f(x) members outside of Luna were weak vocally and established f(x) in music genres that would suit that. That's why most f(x) songs are EDM or Europop, both genres that don't need strong vocals from performers unlike R&B and ballads. But obviously MeUs will still blame Red Velvet and SM for everything instead of looking at the shortcomings and weaknesses of their darling f(x). Edit : Finally about this quote "they have better idol career and chances than f(x)", outside of this sounding very bitter, it's just not true. Yeri is the least popular member of Red Velvet and still hasn't released a solo album probably because of this exact reason. Then there are tons of idols who are hugely successful despite being weak vocalists so why focus on Irene or Yeri ? Why aren't you criticizing Jimin of BTS or Lisa of Blackpink who are way more popular than anyone from Red Velvet ? Why does this have to be a competition between Red Velvet and f(x) in your mind ?
I would argue that Ningning has more of a warm tone and Giselle is the neutral tone within the group, love this vid though. Do a deeper dive on older sm girl groups like f(x), S.e.s
@@guntherstewart8941 If you don't believe me search SNSD's vocal analysis and you will see Jessica had a major role when it comes to their sound (harmonies, adlibs and choruses) surprisingly even more than Taeyeon. Of course, Taeyeon had better technique, was more highlighted and has more lines, but I'm talking about what occurs in the background/choruses. Don't even mention Seohyun, she was in my opinion underrated and underutilized as a vocalist in the group even while being as skilled as Jessica. Tiffany definitely was more featured.
I was kiiind of hoping you’d include S.E.S, The Grace, and F(x) in this. Don’t get me wrong. I’m always here for hyping up SNSD, Red Velvet, and Aespa’s vocals! But I would have loved to see a more expanded analysis of all SME groups. Anyways, this is still a great vid and I love the effort you put into finding good clips to demonstrate your points!
13:10 I think as a casual listener, winter's vibratio technique was almost zero(rare). I think it's because he always gets the part sharp dan piercing tone. But at the 2nd verse, Armageddon. He loudly answered my question. CMIIW
Sad that you didnt include f(x), but its true that their music trajectory is very contradicting from SNSD. They even promote them differently in every way possible. A lot of their songs barely have a melody line, like their song composition is almost like a boygroup with a minimal melody and more rthymical. But they're still an SM groups. You will still hear random harmony out of nowhere, not to mention the bridges. Musically Red Velvet and Aespa are closer to f(x) than to SNSD, I think f(x) may be responsible the most of todays kpop sounds, bcs f(x) is the only group in kpop that keep on experimenting. I do think SNSD has some of the prettiest vocal line, like ever, but f(x) is the mother of todays kpop music. If its not for them, we will never get a quality album that we have today. Their last three album was mentioned everywhere when people talk about musical direction, bcs thats the first time that kpop has such a quality. When Luna releases her solo album, it upsets me that people barely mention her ep, even when she debuted with a dance track. Luna was never really fit into korean beauty standard, she is the least popular member of f(x) but since she joined a lot of korean singing shows I thought it can be something. And then GoT happens, lol, ofc its SM that forgets f(x), but it baffles me that people barely even commented about her. We also have S.E.S and The Grace, but since they're from different era I think fair enough you didnt include that. Then again its still a great video tho. Good luck on the exam
Luna (or any f(x) member for that matter) was not in Got the Beat cuz she was not part of SM anymore. Her contract had expired in 2019 and has not renewed it since. Obviously she can't join then.
@hangingtree9637 There are few people who mention how different GOT would be if Luna joined. You are right, Luna is extremely underrated.I thought she got extremely famous during Masked Singer, so her album would be supported, but no appreciation at all. There was also a problem with timing as well.
I'm an rv fan but hearing aespa sing live in their recent encores surprised me a lot. They are amazing as a group but omg they are all stable individually.
Great video explaining why Aespa is unique. Took me a while to like Ningning's vocal style and much preferred Winter's. Now I realize that it's because Winter is more similar to Taeyeon, whom I'm more accustomed to as a Gen 2 stan.
But yes, I love people appreciating SNSD. I firmly believe that if it weren't for them, we likely wouldn't have gotten many gg who debuted after them (or at least not in the way we now know them). Everyone knows them and for good reason.
For those complaining about f(x) and ses not being here, I think he was just picking one group per generation to show the change in the overall vocal approach in SME by each passing generation. And he probably doesn't know much about 1st generation groups like ses, not a lot people know much about 1st gen idols to be honest. The video was good and detailed so can we appreciate that?
Yes, but the problem is she used the term "evolution" so it means it should be all SM Girl groups past and current. She should make research first before posting content. You can't blame them if they're complaining. Expect it if there's a lot of criticism against her in the comment section because she didn't do it in the right way, she still discredited the other SM artists as well. I'm not hating her btw but she should just indicate the active one instead of using the word "Evolution"
@mikkaill93 as if gg is active. Apart from their reunion they hadn't had an actual comeback with the full group in YEARS. and before you say "oh their solo work" fx and ses have solo work.
2:00 taeyeon was absolutely the powerhouse but the vocal backbone was jessica. she's quite literally backing taeyeon up in that itnw highnote lool. that's why they still have to use her voice in so many of their songs despite her parting ways with the group and any songs they've removed her voice from, the chorus sound completely hollow. its a shame her role in the group as a main vocal alongside taeyeon is completely ignored in this video. also if the mimicing comment is about jessica...ofc they have similar approaches to singing considering they were exclusively trained together by the same person under sm.
It seems that Jessica is continuously downplayed by this UA-camr, it's not the first time. It's like he's avoiding talking too much about her or showing her because of OT8 stans possible backlash... Regardless of that, Jessica will remain a vocal legend in KPOP
Taeyeon is both the powerhouse and backbone of SNSD songs. Lmao. Take out Taeyeon, SNSD songs will crumble and fail to exist. That’s the meaning of backbone. Literally the foundation of something. Jessica vocal alone cannot carry SNSD. She lacks the power, tone and emotion that Taeyeon’s vocal has. If that ITNW high note is your only argument, that clear you lacks argument. LOOOOL. Taeyeon carries a huge part of SNSD songs. Jessica might be present in the chorus harmonisation but the other members can do it well too like Seohyun and actually Sunny if SM utilities her more.
@@AoDk673 Of course, NO ONE could deny Taeyeon's contribution, she has the best technique, power and emotion. There's a reason she's giving the most difficult parts and the most lines. BUT Jessica's the backbone because she was the colour of their songs behind the chorus, harmonies, adlibs, etc. Yes, other members could do it as well, but her voice color was the ingredient that made SNSD sound girly and sweet. Taeyeon was the other half that define their style, definitely. There's a reason BOTH Taeyeon and Jessica were the main vocalists.
@@AoDk673 oh wow lmao what a load of nothing. i used the itnw highnote as an example because in the video that was HIS example for powerhouse and backbone, when in reality jessica is literally backing taeyeon's highnote up to add power and tone 😭 learn to read and comprehend before responding to me thanks! jessica was the foundation of so many of their songs, that's why they can't remove her voice from half their songs and the ones they have removed her vocals from sound worse because they don't have her bright tone. jessica's tone set snsd apart as much as taeyeon's highnotes did. that's why taeyeon is the powerhouse and jessica is the backbone. their music was forced to change without her just like it would have if they lost taeyeon's highnotes.
@@fajar4741 yes and I feel sad. Vocalist like Lina, luna ,uji,Dia and big mama should get the recognition they deserve. The same case is jype whenever there is discussion of great vocalist they always leave Jamie and yerin when they both are better than lily.
Such an interesting video. Vocal composition is such an interesting topic and is so nice to see that a company like SM not just cares about their idols individual vocal skills but how the vocals of the members needs to work together in the creation of the groups indentity. Plus, is really nice to see/hear how different Red Velvet and Aespa sound from each other. The first has a very elegant, polish, round and feminie sound to their vocals. While, the second has a very aggressive, metalic and bold approach to their sound. Not just that, but also how the vocals of certain members estrategic ended up giving more harmony to the group overall sound. In that sense, members like Giselle or Yeri firstly can be seen as out of place in their respective groups, but with more care you can notice how their vocals bring balance to the groups vocal display. The lack of a member like this can be really negative to the vocal composition of a group. I personally think Riize suffers from that problem, all the members have a very youthful sound and a nasal approach to their vocals, that plus the lack of a member with a more distinctive vocal color, results in a very annoying and obnoxious sound to the group from time to time.
i generally agree with the thesis of sm's evolution and how they keep up with current trends, and i love the breakdown you give to each group and how they compare to each other. i do disagree with a few things though 1) leaving out f(x) in terms of vocal evolution is a misstep bc f(x) was sm's experimental group in terms of sound and concept. i understand that you're only one person with a busy life, but not mentioning f(x) at all (even just to explain their exclusion) undermines how much the group contributed to sm's "signature sound" now 2) i don't think taeyeon and jessica's voices are that similar at all. even back when i was very new to kpop, i was able to differentiate between them because their vocal colours were so different. sica's unique timbre during harmonies was the reason why snsd's songs were so identifiable (along with taeyeon's incredible belts). if taeyeon is equivalent to wendy, sica would be equivalent to joy (at least for vocal tone and colour imo) 3) i'm surprised you didn't cover vocal uniqueness and colour very much (aside from warm and cool). what seems to be a selling point for many groups now is how "unique" a vocalist is so they have a "signature" sound. with rv and esp aespa, it's easy to spot who's who in a song bc they all sound so different from each other. again, i know you're only one person who can only cover so much in a single video, but i'd love to hear your thoughts on this, esp wrt sm's vocal evolution. one of my fave things about sm groups is that despite how unique an individual vocalist can be, their group is still vocally competent enough to cover for them even if they're missing. for the most part, their groups aren't over-reliant on any single voice that suddenly eliminating them would affect their vocal sound super drastically. skill-wise, it would matter of course. rv straight up doesn't cover for some of wendy's belts bc she's the only one who CAN do them. but what i'm saying is that even when she's missing it's still possible for the other members to pick up the slack and still sound like rv. eg: seulgi doing wendy's prechorus during the psycho era. wendy's power was missing yes, but rv still sounded like rv and not, for example, another group doing a cover of them i really did enjoy the video otherwise, and i hope one day you can cover these topics in another video! best of luck with your studies ❤️❤️
I like how you were able to identify Ningning and Winter position well in the group. Same reason why i find their vocal blending not suited to one another in which i notice alot in their songs.
For me, girls on top is actually crazy, they choosing every vocalists into one team full of highnote proofing SM really give it all when it comes to vocals, that's why i love pinkblood company, now i love Aespa and NCT dream sooo much, they have the best harmonization
Kind of wish you included F(X), The Grace, SES... but I guess the more recent gg make more sense? Either way, interesting video. We all want to know what's next if SM would just tell us but it seems delays keep happening (we will allegedly find out this year but seriously, Im tired of rumors about trainees who may or may not be in the line up - assuming they are even in the company to begin with - so I really hope we learn whats next sooner rather than later)
compare to taeyeon, wendy, ningning, Lena from Grace and Luna from f(x) both have different tone added more power and vibrato that can deliver emtional quality but not going with any types of songs.
Y'all need to calm down in the comments😭 Would it have been nice if he added f(x), S.E.S, Lina, etc. to this video? Sure, but I think y'all are forgetting the fact that this man is a whole medical student in his final year😭 Not everyone has the time to get to know groups that haven't been active for more than a decade💀 The fact that he's still pumping out videos now is already impressive enough. If he wants to make videos solely on the groups that he's already familiar with, then let him. "Stop the ______ erasure!" "I don't think you emphasized ______ enough" "justice for ______" okay well how about y'all make your own videos instead then🧍♀️
Funny thing is Kpop stans themselves don't care about older vocalists and disbanded/inactive groups. But they will pretend to care about them in the comments. 😭
@@RiswjyV exactly, they're just complaining for attention despite the fact that most of them don't even follow those inactive groups anymore themselves. I just hope they don't stress this man out and scare him off into going on hiatus, he's one of the only good vocal analyst here in K-tube lmao
Not to mentioned, yes Luna as main vocalist are better than Taeyeon, but group/vocal line wise SNSD is better 😭 also SNSD is the text book of girl group in kpop and shape up their own generation as well as their juniors so ofc he would just pick SNSD for 2nd gen, no hate towards f(x) tho, love them and their albums too
I agree with you! The same people who are commenting "justice for (SES/ Grace/ Fx)" or "I can't believe you forgot to mention Luna" might be the same person who forget to include Super Junior when they're discussing about SM male vocalist. Suddenly everyone forgets about the existence of Super Junior which is kind of absurd bcoz that group is the second most active boy group under SM.
They really put something in the gatorade in sm to be able to produce such notable vocalists across groups and generations. You could really tell the change in trend with aespa because up until maybe nct, they really highlighted harmonizing in their songs. But I think compared to other companies, they really train most, if not all to be competent enough to debut as soloists. Also they ratio between gg and bg in that company is so 🙃 they are a shtty company but they really know how to train amazing vocalists
Can you do a Boy Group Version from SM. Like from SuJu, Shinee, EXO, and NCT? I know that SuJu's main singers are considered the best in KPOP, so it would be interesting to see your analysis of their talents. Same with Shinee, EXO, and NCT (including WayV, cause XiaoJun and Ten never get any appreciation for their talents 😢)
No one could ever come close to SM vocalists, both bg and gg, from snsd to Aespa, tvxq to Riize, esp. EXO omg they're actually a monsters, and i feel really emotional when i heard broken melodies by nct dream, I mean their vocals bruhh, SM vocalists are the reason why i cannot leaving kpop

Didn’t Tiffany even mentioned in Hidden Singer (2014) that Taeyeon possessed a higher technique power that none of the member in SNSD (OT9 that time) can do?

Would love to see something like a series where you go a bit more in depth with sm gg's vocals, like you did for nmixx/kiof/baemon Anw, I have realised that the biggest similarity between the groups is that no members of each group seem afraid of singing at all, and I think that's one of the biggest things that need to be the standard in kpop
I like this video! Such a great analysis! ❤❤ I can’t wait to see how this evolves from an even farther point in the future. It’s not coming to see such detailed dissection of these vocalist so very happy for this find. ❤
Just some constructive criticism. If you want your audience to take these type of videos seriously in the future, you might want to do a little bit more research in the groups you plan to cover. Your obvious bias and causal dismissiveness is the reason why you're getting such push back.
I don’t think Taeyeon and Jessica sound alike at all tbh, they both have unique voice’s especially Jessica. The only person who sounds like her is Krystal.
Sorry this is not called Evolution without F(x) stop discrediting them especially Luna no hate but she's even better than those main vocalists. There' also the grace and S.E.S, because of that I clicked the dislike button sorry :)))
THIS!!! People in the comments are acting delusional, saying it's ok. It's also the uploader fault as well. He should have done proper usage of words. He should have mentioned active groups and not mentioned evolution as evolution means all the group. People are already worried about the erasure of f(x), and they are hoping for the legend of them.
He's a whole medical student. Please stop being dramatic. Also, f(x) was not a vocal group. They were a CONCEPT group. Meaning they only had 1 good Vocalist, 2 okay vocalists, and everyone else had to fit a role to make the music sound good. They were never a vocal group. The only vocal groups in SM are Red Velvet, SNSD, and aespa.
Luna is the only one with good vocals in Fx. Even Krystal is lower than Sunny from SNSD and their sub vocalist Victoria and Sulli (R.I.P) are lower than Yoona, Hyo, Yeri, Irene from SNSD AND RV.
People in the comments section need to calm down with this whole ________ erasure. His choice if he wants to add them plus he’s made past videos including Luna of FX. He’s also a medical student, busy man, and still making time to upkeep quality videos
People are so lacking in comprehension these days, you do one thing yet they interpret it in a totally different way. How do you guys see this and think op is erasing other sm ggs? You can maybe criticize that since SES, CSJH The Grace, and f(x) are missing, then this is not totally comprehensive. However, haven't you also considered that maybe op simply doesn't have the time to study SIX groups, so he stuck with THREE in the most recent generations, dropping f(x) because they and GG are in the same gen?
OP has continuously made videos using these groups all the time. BTW, OP mentioned "Evolution," which means all the groups. The viewers can expect the analysis of all the groups from him. There is no one covering them.
aespa sounds good when singing in unison too! this video of them singing their tetris ost "hold on tight" during a sound check for one of their concerts was in my recommended - ua-cam.com/video/qBUjPGWDI5Q/v-deo.html
Idk if you didn't include f(x) because you think these 3 are better examples for your topic, but honestly it doesn't matter that they're not included. I personally think that f(x) vocal color is different than these 3, they didn't sounds like they've been trained by SM and that's why they're special

SM is always associated with good vocals, and thankfully they have kept that identity so far, even with the change in management. I am drawn to SM since vocal is my 1st priority when it comes to an idol.
Stop the Luna erasure! 😢
People hardly talk about f(x) when they talk about SM, but they were with the company for what? 10 years? And put out so much amazing music.
I’d love to see a vocal comparison that includes Luna with the top SM female vocalists. She came from a family of classical vocalists but ended up taking the pop route herself. Her voice is amazing!
There’s no need for a comparison with Lune she’s so high high on top that no one catch her

There is a video he made of SM female main vocalists with Luna, Wendy, Taeyeon and Ningning. You can watch that anytime, don't worry Luna is the top in that ranking.

SM BEST GEN VOCALISTS:
2ND GEN >3RD GEN>1ST GEN>4TH GEN/5TH GEN

I love taeyeon a lot. She has both skills as well as beautiful tone that can melt your hearts 🥰
I just hope they're given more chances to sing live and promoted better now.❤
I love when Taeyeon's voice was darker back then.
I can't even take you serious after that Red Velvet analysis 😂😂😂
i really love her vocal tone. and she always continues to improve!! she's so impressive that it gives me inspiration.
One more thing.

@@Yointrovert but I think they did that to share for equally de lines.
Imo Winter has Taeyeon's tone but Bada's punch and sharpness. Ningning has Bada's tone but Taeyeon's roundness and elegance.

I am looking forward to SM's incoming 5th gen girl group. It seems that with aespa they learned to utilize both colors they got from SNSD and RV

I don't like it when people talk about sm vocals but not mention Lina.
And Luna. Don't forget her.
Lina and Luna are extremely underrated 😢
@@fajar4741 yes and I feel sad.
Vocalist like Lina, luna ,uji,Dia and big mama should get the recognition they deserve. The same case is jype whenever there is discussion of great vocalist they always leave Jamie and yerin when they both are better than lily.
@@Aryan-yj4quit's called popularity. Most kpop fans are new and they don't care about group that are disbanded
@@user-cj5tm3te7c I am not talking about everyone but the people who value vocal should have an idea about them.
I personally think Riize suffers from that problem, all the members have a very youthful sound and a nasal approach to their vocals, that plus the lack of a member with a more distinctive vocal color, results in a very annoying and obnoxious sound to the group from time to time.
i generally agree with the thesis of sm's evolution and how they keep up with current trends, and i love the breakdown you give to each group and how they compare to each other. i do disagree with a few things though
1) leaving out f(x) in terms of vocal evolution is a misstep bc f(x) was sm's experimental group in terms of sound and concept. i understand that you're only one person with a busy life, but not mentioning f(x) at all (even just to explain their exclusion) undermines how much the group contributed to sm's "signature sound" now
2) i don't think taeyeon and jessica's voices are that similar at all. even back when i was very new to kpop, i was able to differentiate between them because their vocal colours were so different. sica's unique timbre during harmonies was the reason why snsd's songs were so identifiable (along with taeyeon's incredible belts). if taeyeon is equivalent to wendy, sica would be equivalent to joy (at least for vocal tone and colour imo)
3) i'm surprised you didn't cover vocal uniqueness and colour very much (aside from warm and cool). what seems to be a selling point for many groups now is how "unique" a vocalist is so they have a "signature" sound. with rv and esp aespa, it's easy to spot who's who in a song bc they all sound so different from each other.
again, i know you're only one person who can only cover so much in a single video, but i'd love to hear your thoughts on this, esp wrt sm's vocal evolution. one of my fave things about sm groups is that despite how unique an individual vocalist can be, their group is still vocally competent enough to cover for them even if they're missing. for the most part, their groups aren't over-reliant on any single voice that suddenly eliminating them would affect their vocal sound super drastically.
skill-wise, it would matter of course. rv straight up doesn't cover for some of wendy's belts bc she's the only one who CAN do them. but what i'm saying is that even when she's missing it's still possible for the other members to pick up the slack and still sound like rv. eg: seulgi doing wendy's prechorus during the psycho era. wendy's power was missing yes, but rv still sounded like rv and not, for example, another group doing a cover of them
i really did enjoy the video otherwise, and i hope one day you can cover these topics in another video! best of luck with your studies ❤️❤️
Very unfortunate that other SM girl groups, especially the grace and specifically Luna weren’t here
Kind of wish you included F(X), The Grace, SES... but I guess the more recent gg make more sense? Either way, interesting video. We all want to know what's next if SM would just tell us but it seems delays keep happening (we will allegedly find out this year but seriously, Im tired of rumors about trainees who may or may not be in the line up - assuming they are even in the company to begin with - so I really hope we learn whats next sooner rather than later)
ngl, winter's voice is sometimes painful to listen to.
Thank YOU for always delivering 🙌
compare to taeyeon, wendy, ningning, Lena from Grace and Luna from f(x) both have different tone added more power and vibrato that can deliver emtional quality but not going with any types of songs.
Hmmm coincidence that this comes out the same day as the announcement of a Red Velvet comeback AND aespa Japanese debut?! I think not 😂😅
Y'all need to calm down in the comments😭 Would it have been nice if he added f(x), S.E.S, Lina, etc. to this video?
THIS. Leave this busy man alone who makes time to make these analysis videos and be grateful!
Nice video🔥
But, what about SM BOYGROUP vocal evolution?
the main MAIN vocals (taeyeon, wendy, ningning) styles and technique are more flavorful/healthier
I don't know about bgs but in girl groups in very genration there was a better vocalist that sm vocalist.
1st genration- ock jahyun was better
2nd - Both younghyun and lina were in same league
3rd - uji ,Shannon williams,Dia are better than wendy.
4th - Lili,haewon are better than ningning.
And I am not disrespecting these idol but there are lot of great groups which are same or better than sm gg groups.
The only thing is other than sm there is no single company which have great vocal groups in every generation.
I am only talking about girl groups.

2nd gen - Kyuhun>>>> [Big mama aren't kpop group)
3rd gen- Chen>>>>>>
4th gen, Nayul>>
5th is still going on
There is also one more difference. You can mention one group/idol from each company in each generation. You can find many in sm
@@songkang3xsrvx I just said about girl groups as I don't really know about boys groups . I mentioned big mama only because they were from yg as you talked about vocalist from sm.
@@songkang3xsrvx if you are talking about Nayul from 12 Dal then yes she is better vocalist than lily.
@@songkang3xsrvx I mean other difference could be sm is only group where every group is vocally strong. And in other companies they look for different thing. Yg have their sass, stage presence ,rapping ,jyp has dance ,cube has self producing idols.
I hope their new girl group supposed to debut this year will have a very good vocal level too !
Agree that SNSD's leads are better than RV's but when it comes to subs is Irene really below Yoona?
No but definitely yuri and sooyoung has better touch with their voice. Like they have better control even with Joy.
Yoona, Irene and Yeri are about on the same skills. They all lacked control and power - technique is NOT just about support.
Yoona have beautiful tone, so i guest she is better than irene and yeri.

SHIN YEONA, LEE JIYOUNG, LEE YOUNGHYUN AND PARK MINHYE ➡️ PARK BOM AND DARA ➡️ ROSE AND JISOO ➡️ RAMI, PHARITA, RORA, AHYEON AND CHIQUITA..
2:46 could you please share some examples of other SNSD members mimicking Taeyeon's singing? I've only see Sooyoung and other members playfully sing Taeyeon's parts in their radio show guestings but I wonder if there is signature style Taeyeon use that members may have adapted to their own singing styles
Didn’t Tiffany even mentioned in Hidden Singer (2014) that Taeyeon possessed a higher technique power that none of the member in SNSD (OT9 that time) can do?

Ohh i remember a year or two ago i was begging for some snsd recognition on your channel😭😭I’ll say it again…we’d love to see more of snsd here…not only taeyeon…if you need help with their clips…i am willing and open..also Jessica…her voice was basically what gave snsd’s songs color and flavour especially in their japanese tracks…in their vocal analyses you can hear majority of the harmonies and layerings are done by her…after she left yes the songs got better..the production too…but many fans feel (me included) the special color was gone…i would be glad to help u learn more of her and tje members..i mean popular clips are all over the place but sayyy some lesser known good moments of singing??
I agree completely. He didn't touch on the fact that Jessica was what made the group had it's own sonic identity. He never talks about her in any of his videos. Maybe is to avoid OT8 hate against him.
@@drewdidenot7722lmao. Dont fret it. Jessica isnt the one that made the group has it sounds identity. Lmaoooooo. If anything, Taeyeon did more than her. She sings the main part, killing part, main chorus also the harmonisation, did the most challenging part literally with power and precision and also the one carrying them in live.
@@AoDk673 You can laugh as much as you want. But just listen to several vocal analysis of their songs and then we can't talk if Jessica's contribution were as little as you said... What a biased comment. No one's diminishing Taeyeon role. But Jessica definitely play an important part, because she was THE OTHER MAIN VOCAL. Whether you like it or not. You can't change history.
Would love to see something like a series where you go a bit more in depth with sm gg's vocals, like you did for nmixx/kiof/baemon
Anw, I have realised that the biggest similarity between the groups is that no members of each group seem afraid of singing at all, and I think that's one of the biggest things that need to be the standard in kpop
I was realllly hoping f(x) would be included~ since pple talk about dem so little was very curious about how they would fit in all of this

I like this video! Such a great analysis! ❤❤ I can’t wait to see how this evolves from an even farther point in the future. It’s not coming to see such detailed dissection of these vocalist so very happy for this find. ❤
Ningning has a much warmer voice but winter's voice kicks harder
Finally, the video I have been waiting!
Just some constructive criticism. If you want your audience to take these type of videos seriously in the future, you might want to do a little bit more research in the groups you plan to cover. Your obvious bias and causal dismissiveness is the reason why you're getting such push back.
Can u tell me how is he biased??
I don't understand?

I don’t think Taeyeon and Jessica sound alike at all tbh, they both have unique voice’s especially Jessica. The only person who sounds like her is Krystal.

I'd love to see this with YG.
Their evolution from 2NE1 to BP to BM (not in music, cos girl...) in terms of vocals is so interesting.
What about f(x)??
Don't you think Fx at least warranted a MENTION?
Sorry this is not called Evolution without F(x) stop discrediting them especially Luna no hate but she's even better than those main vocalists. There' also the grace and S.E.S, because of that I clicked the dislike button sorry :)))
THIS!!! People in the comments are acting delusional, saying it's ok. It's also the uploader fault as well. He should have done proper usage of words. He should have mentioned active groups and not mentioned evolution as evolution means all the group. People are already worried about the erasure of f(x), and they are hoping for the legend of them.
You do your own videon next time. Stop yapping like a mad dog here
How the fuck are you going to mention great vocals without Luna of f(x)
He's a whole medical student. Please stop being dramatic. Also, f(x) was not a vocal group. They were a CONCEPT group. Meaning they only had 1 good Vocalist, 2 okay vocalists, and everyone else had to fit a role to make the music sound good. They were never a vocal group. The only vocal groups in SM are Red Velvet, SNSD, and aespa.
Leave this man alone and go make your own video tf
There is no one covering them.
you talked a lot about Jessica and showed her for only 5 sec k
Well cuz the more important person Taeyeon is there. 🤷🏻

Idk if you didn't include f(x) because you think these 3 are better examples for your topic, but honestly it doesn't matter that they're not included. I personally think that f(x) vocal color is different than these 3, they didn't sounds like they've been trained by SM and that's why they're special

this video is kinda poorly made. I would love to see a remake in the future.
If you listened to Winter sang Tomboy, you would realize that she made nasal sound on purpose (could be for the concept?). For me, the difference between Ningning’s voice and Winter’s voice in aespa songs makes me want to listen it again multiple times like I didn’t get bored
