  • This weekend I entered the Great Pyramid Race in Gordonvale. Check it out to see what the race is like for an average runner.
I made a separate video for the Enter My World challenge, but it didn't really capture my true passion like this video does. Running and racing is what drives me. I'm not good at it, but I love it.

Here is my story: In 2003, two weeks before the race, my mate Carlo told me that we would be participating. I did not know how famous this race is and I had not run more than 5 to 10 km on flat terrain. Here is 12 km with a 1 km high pyramid mountain .... We ran a few times near the house to get a bit of training. The night before we had been nightclubbing and drinking, hitting the Ouzo hard. Just a few hours sleep and there we went... drinking away the hang over with plenty water. It was a humid and hot day. Amidst veteran runners and marathon runners we felt out of our element. They asked, how long we had been training, how many marathons had we run before ... duhhhhh.... The run up to the base of the steep mountain turned out a disaster as the water we drank lay heavy on the stomach and prevented me from breathing. My mate gave up at the bottom but I would not just yet. My heart felt like exploding and the running turned into crawling over rocks and through plant vegetation over sandy pathways. An old lady pushed me on by saying its worth it and I would be near the top.... Not even close hahaha. But I made it. The old lady took off when she realized what time it was She had to hurry to get her grandchildren from school..! Luckily my mate managed to get to the top just before the deadline as well and together we descended. The pain in muscles, that I did not even know I had, became unbearable. Most accidents happen on the way down when losing control and going too fast. Back to the start was more of a stroll and we lost a lot of time. We arrived just after the 3 hour deadline but we made it and so many did not. Only a 100 runners are allowed because of the dangerous climb and descent. I came in 74th place. Carlo 75th. Runners would train the whole year for this run !!! It made our achievement even more unlikely and amazing. It took a good time to recover but Hell, we can be proud of ourselves !

That’s an incredible story. I can’t imagine doing the mountain hungover, let alone the race! Absolutely remarkable effort. It truly is a one of a kind race.

I love the start of this vid. I'm deffo more like your mate, I just get going and do what is in front of me, usually to my detriment. That climb looked tough. 👍👍

Maybe you guys have the right idea? The climb was brutal. Awesome race though. One I think I’ll prepare a lot more for next year.

a few things come to my mind.....
there is no reason to be disappointed, you did what you could on the day, and that is always good enough
2 hours is only a big thing, if you make it as such, otherwise it is only a bunch of numbers, nothing special. 120 minutes, 7200 seconds, just numbers
you could have made under 10000 seconds to be your goal and made it easily....
a worthwhile goal could be changing from result oriented thinking to a process oriented thinking.......
if you do not want to look at your watch, there are several options...
on half of my runs i do not carry a stopwatch
when i wear a long sleeve shirt or a jacket i normally do not check the watch, because i don`t bother to pull up the sleeve and have a look
On Saturday i try something completely new, when i do my longest run of the year. After some time of getting into the flow, i put some tape over the watch. I remove it only about 1k from the end to make sure, that i do not run too far.
I will see, if having to pull off the tape prevents me from having a peak during a rough section.....

I’m disappointed because I couldn’t translate the improvements that I’ve made into a better result. That’s all my body was prepared to give on the day. I’m happy though that I have a clear plan of how to improve for next year’s race. Knowing where to go next makes me happy!

Your body can do what your body can do -- especially after illness. The fact that you stuck it out says a lot! Good on ya, mate! Good luck with the half marathon.

They did the climb earlier, they earned their rest! Put this one on your list for when travel is back on the cards. I think it'd be right up your alley.

Way to tough out a challenging race! Some of those climbs had me feeling tired! Keep pushing!

Thanks mate. There was a guy doing the race with a Go2 stuck on his hat. I want to see the footage he got to get a true picture of how steep that climb was. I don’t know how people get down so quickly!!

Great effort, was a good day I saw you near the top! I also missed my two hour goal, like you said it such a unique race being so steep I need to do more specific training on the pyramid for next year. It’s an awesome event though

Was that you telling me to keep my cadence up as we were coming down? It really is a great event. I’ll be aiming to do a few repeats sessions before the race next year.

I took over a week to stop hurting after this race. Your quads just burn! It is a brutal hill. Well worth the climb when you get to the top though.
