"It leads me to think one thing, and that is: you're not practicing enough." I've been sitting here lamenting about how I never get better but I can't even remember the last time I seriously took a pencil and TRIED. I keep being sad at why I'm not good when I could be spending that time getting BETTER. Then I started looking up videos thinking "how do you do that" and then I see this. You called me on it. I needed to hear it. Tire probably never gonna see this, but thank you so much.
I took life drawing classes for years, and my favorite poses for the one minute gesture poses. I feel like that's where I learned the most. Our teacher emphasized them, saying that if you spend hours carefully finishing and shading a pose, but the post is not drawn well, you've wasted your time. He also emphasized the separation of the upper and lower torso segments, (rib cage and pelvis), and the independent movement of each. I always started my figure drawings, even the long ones, by establishing the rib cage and pelvis masses. The head and limbs are just the secondary appendages to that essential mass. Well done!
Thank you very much for sharing Robert. Sounds like you had a great instructor. Those classes are extremely valuable. I think you hit the nail on the head with the 1 minute studies. I also love the idea that you can put down so many poses in a short amount of time. Great way to quickly understand the complexity of the human body. You capture the flow and energy of the body and don't get lost in all the details. Thanks for watching this channel and more on the way real soon! ;) -Robert
this is exactly what I needed to hear. I bought the best digital art tech I could afford and finally realized its not the fancy gear that makes good art, its the time and dedication. this has been the most beneficial art video I have ever watched.
I remember coming across your videos when I picked up drawing, I even have several of your courses, they taught me the basics, even though they were hard to apply at first.. and now almost 5 years later I’m alot better than I was at the beginning. Thanks Robert, I might have given up if it wasn’t for your videos!
You improved so much. Very inspiring, improvement in art is so subtle. People tend to quit because they don't feel good enough but drawing/ painting is a neverending process.
well, I found it really helpful to literally quickly try to follow along what you were doing. Was a great help. Totally agree about what you'd said. It take hours of practice and it's just that volume of work which can make you get better.
At a younger age I didn’t want to draw guidelines or study I wanted to just draw and somehow make it look like the artist who created the style did it. Obviously now it’s foolish to me and now at age 16 I appreciate guidelines and shapes, I didn’t know how fun it was to draw shapes in perspective until recently. I plan to get somewhat decent this year, and I’ve been pretty consistent because it’s fun and is now a every day all day thing. I don’t have the feeling of having to draw I just get the urge to, and I know that I’m lucky to feel that way. So I plan to not have this sudden motivation go to waste 😄
i got hundreds of channel for drawing, some are good some are less good, but your way you examples are exactly how i think i need to draw and learn, thenks for your videos(going over all of them).
Well, this is the first video to actually make me realize that I'm not gonna get better by myself, and I need to actually practice and study by myself, I've been looking for that thing that you said where there's just one thing this time, but you made me acknowledge that I need to study and study, this helped me for more than just figure drawing, thank you very much, this helped a lot.
I’ve been drawing my whole life but it’s always been very cartoony or complete realism with no in-between, I’m trying to start drawing in a comic style and these videos from you have been so helpful!
WOW! i just watched half this video... twice, and i managed to change the pose of the first one from left arm bent at elbow to left arm out stretched... i even made a open hand pose... ive struggled for so long and a few mins of video by you and im better! thank you!!! and i think its mainly the talk about visualization and practice thats helped! thank you again!
The perspective shot was hilarious because when you're getting to the end if you just put a wheel in between the legs it would become Rosie the robot from the Jetsons. I know this is an old video but it's my first time finding it and boy did I ever have a good laugh
Starting sketching is so painfull. Every single one of mine sketches looks horrible. They gives me nightmares. But I want to draw. So depressing. Your vid is the one what gives me hope. THX.
i really need a consistent art style so i'm thinking of comic book art because 1. i love comic books (the batman ones are my favorite) and 2. i love how they are realistic but still a tad bit cartoony, thats my favorite kind of style
I'm thinking the same thing I've made so many comics when I was younger out of stapled paper. I like the DC and Marvel as well and I want to be a Comic Designer one day but I gotta finish school first.... 😑
Thanks for this video, your explanation is very relaxed which helps a lot. I'm at this stage where I have to find a job that isn't art related because I'm just not good enough, and the pressure to work really hard is kind of getting to me. All these tutorials saying "you must know this, you have to know this, if you don't know this you can't call yourself an artist"... I mean of course it's important to learn a lot but there's only so much you can do at a time.
+Jesse O I agree. I know the frustration you feel. I would just focus on doing a little bit every day and slowly grow that over time. You don't want to push too hard and get burned out, it can happen. Just do what feels right and focus on what gets you inspired to create. Good luck to you and thanks for watching!
Thank You !! This is fantastic. I love the idea of 1 2 3. Many times the thing most difficult for me is just having a starting point. This makes so much sense.... I love your work.
wow this is the most helpful video I found in UA-cam I already mastered the face angles but I suck at the body and thnx to dis video I found what I'm looking for now I'm getting a hang of this its a lot easier than the face. great video m8!!
I am so happy to find this. I really want to learn how to draw heads, figures since I'm learning 3d animation and modeling. I have my sketch books. Just got more pencils. I really want to create and get better
This was really helpful. Im a young artist and have been looking for ways to draw anatomy and came upon the cylindar/square technique which is really helpful but I didnt really learn how to put the blocky form into a dynamic figure. This video showed me that and a few more ways to draw the body so thanks. Sorry for writing so much ima keep on practicing lol.
This helped me so much with figures! I have been struggling with perspective and this definitely helps! I am definitely going to keep looking back on this video for help! 😀
I need to review these. I had felt that I had gotten a decent hold of the basics of anatomy and I did draw some cool stuff... but then I didn't draw anything for a week (while I tried to concentrate on perspective) and then when I tried to draw from imagination, I totally sucked. Never forget that you will always need to view and review to make sure you never forget.
+abeeraa3 Hello to you as well! And yes I have been meaning to do some basic techniques as well. Thanks for your comment and for watching this channel!
Thanks for the help, Im really trying to do my best to see if I can get better at drawing because I think I really like it. I found this process very relaxing if you know how to do it cause otherwise is just so annoying and depressing and you feel like you cant do anything at all specially when you being trying for such a long time to get over the anatomy of the body and how it works, but i havent give up yet, Im still trying to do my best I hope I can make a good piece of art in a near future. Again, thanks a lot Robert Marzullo.
Robert you’ve inspired me. My dream would to be a comic artist and bring my own ideas to life. Could you imagine drawing for marvel ? Thanks, Rob. This is going to sound silly, but I never thought of combining two ellipses, like you did, to form the torso. That was really awesome. I had bought David H. Ross's book, "Freehand Figure Drawing For Illustrators". I try to research a bit about the book before I buy it. But from experience, I don't know if I can use it until after I buy it. But his book is excellent for the mannequin he uses, but he really doesn't cover the structure of each of the cylinder forms, so the reader can replicate it. He does show different angles, but to a real novice who doesn't use backward engineering, it isn't too helpful. I was stuck on his upper torso form until it dawned on me he's combining the shoulder blades with the rib cage. Now watching your video has really streamlined it for me. Hi, Rob. Thanks, for responding! Yep. Your videos are great. That's why I love watching artists tutorials, because not everybody looks at a solution the same way. And, I mean it, that tip of the torso was fantastic. I kind of thought of it a while back, but I wasn't sure and couldn't get it to work right. After seeing this video, confirmed it. Good video Robert. When you get really stuck with a certain pose, consider using Manga Studio 5EX. It has some great 3D models which can be posed in all kinds of positions and angles. You need to put in alot of time to learn how to use them, however.
Awesome video. I love this style of video. I draw with you as you draw. As you said, I am guilty of bypassing the cylindrical foundation of the drawing process ( that's probably just one of the reasons that my gestures suck). I am definitely going to incorporate your method of drawing into my art. Please do more of these gesture type of drawings. It helps a lot to draw with you. Oh yeah, lol at your comment about drawing like a kid. Too funny !
