If I didn't have a ASUS gaming laptop I'd probably prefer the ALLY, but the steam deck OLED gives me an experience that I don't get from my gaming laptop. If you don't have a gaming laptop I would definitely prefer the ALLY.

As a gaming Dad that struggles to get near my PS5 I'm seriously considering a handheld gaming PC. I know I should get the Steam Deck OLED but I really want the ability for AAA as well as replacing my 5 year old laptop for some light productivity. I think I'm holding out until Black Friday and see what sales happen and also how the Ally X holds up after real world people have it for a few months.
The best screen protector I have used is AM Film. I tried another brand and it looked good a few week and then bubbles appered under it. The Am Film ones still look great.
This thing bout to be the mecca of games. I'm upgrading it to a 4 tb SSD day 1. I'm also getting a 1.5 TB micro sd card for it. Play games on a micro sd card is ok. Probably don't put the newest stuff most demanding stuff on it but anything over a year old should work with no issues.
It's possible to straight swap immediately, that's what I'll be doing. I'll do a video on it when I get mine. Up to you if you want to turn it on and test to make sure everything works as it should first though.
I have a Rog Ally X on pre order and been loving your videos about the device. Looking forward to your tutorial/review video of upgrading the storage because this is something I am interested in doing. I watched ETA Primes video but want to get the faster one like you plan.

I really wanted to see an 8 inch screen on the ROG Ally but I suppose these mid sized screens now need to be properly manufactured with all the bells and whistles like VRR and OLED as companies are now realizing that this form factor is now a viable option for mass production This is the evolution of the PC, desktops, then laptops, now handhelds. Thumbstick protectors are a crucial area you guys are missing those things get the most wear of the entire device, and a screen protector is mandatoty for such an expensive, important and long-lasting go-to device like the ROG Ally. .
I have only one request. Can the cool dude with the glasses please put the mic a bit further away from his mouth? The ideal range is about 5-6 inches (13 - 15cm) away from the speaker. The base of his voice can get pretty high from the proximity of the mic. Love the content. I watch every video. Edit: Just checked your videos and holy crap. I definitely don't watch every video lol, just the podcast episodes and a few others here and there lol. You guys are on the grind for real.
Good spot, you're right! Unfortunately I don't have enough clean gain to be further away. The Podmic I'm using is way more heavy than AJ's SM7B. We were talking about it yesterday and I was complaining my mic is too bass heavy 🤣 I'll see if I can sort it out or may consider replacing the mic. Glad you're loving the content! 😁
I did not want to screen protect but saw so much glare on all the reviews that I went with the Jsaux Antiglare protector and I have no reflections which is a dream. Is it perfect, no but it is still great.
Yeah you lose a little bit of clarity but makes it feel really premium with that anti-glare, doesn't it?! I had that on my Steam Deck OLED for a while and enjoyed it.
I think the spigen slim kick stand case for the steam deck oled and og ally are the best. Very similar to the skull and co case but has a built in kick stand which is very nice.
Very nice video. I agree with most points. Screen protector is a no for me, but more storage, absolutely, before I even turn it on for the first time. I already have a plan for this, stealing a 2TB 980 Pro from my kid's PS5 (that is only used about 25%), and moving the 1TB from the ROG to PS5, lol. SD card, yes, for storage of docs, pictures, maybe essential software installs, so if for some reason I have to re-install windows, I can have everything I need to quickly get back to business. I think the only other thing for my top 5 would be setting it up as a desktop too, with a doc of some kind, and all the settings and drivers to be used as a second, aka bedroom, PC.

If you plan to swap over the sd, would you then get a dock that can also accept the sd to still utilise the original 1tb drive . Would this also make it easy to clone the new drive and have a de bloated version and all other windows needs when docked ?
My personal pre order arrives on the 22nd but Asus have sent a loaner retail version so we can keep playing with it till then! I know, we’re really lucky.
Why pretend the pre-production unit will be any different to the customer unit? has there ever been a product released that was different from a pre production unit given for testing a month before? its like expecting a game to fix all its flaws by the time it releases when you are testing it a month out from its release, it just will never happen.
@@ThatAnnoyingGuy96 what constitutes “way worse performance”?… did the processor suddenly grow more hardware or did they bork the software so bad pre production units were kicking out 20fps less? But I’m not going to say you are wrong, the question would be what caused the performance to be poor to begin with since the hardware never changed and AMD would be the ones updating drivers for the 780m not Asus.

That isn’t the case most of the time, they’re fixing things and adding things that aren’t in the preproduction models. We won’t know until they come out.

Have you explored using custom versions of Windows for gaming, like Windows Atlas ? what do you think of configuring a dual boot of Bazzite for the steam deck like experience and a lite gaming windows version for Multiplayer and gamepass. you think it is worth it ? will be my first handheld after the switch which I am selling so I want a machine that can do it all given the price tag
Honestly it's not something I've explored! I'll be doing a bloat removal/windows optimization when I get mine but I don't think I'll end up go as far as installing a lite windows os, I've seen people on Reddit having issues. Although I may have a quick research on it!

As above has said, microSD is much slower 100mbs read Vs 7000+ mbs read will impact loading time significantly for example. Swapping the drive shouldn't be scary, just need time and patience. We'll have a guide soon on how to upgrade the drive!

yeah it sounds great for your situation. The price is the stumbling block for most, as it is pricey.

isn't the 12,000 transfer nvme's gen 5 does the ROG support gen 5?
You're 100% correct, 12k+ drives are Gen5, Ally X is Gen4 so not supported!
