This is amazing. I wonder if something like audiobooks or old-time radio shows would be a good fit for something like this, since audio quality would be less important. BTW I'm very impressed with how clear that 3D-printed case turned out.
Great project! Stumbled across this because my band and I are looking into buying some hit clips and putting our album art in them for some fun promo pics. Didn't realize that it was possible to create working ones!
I know this is a 2 year old video now, but I want to say how amazing this is! I recently had a burst of nostalgia and went to find my flower hit clip and Hilary Duff clip on ebay since I believe I lost my original as a kid (I was so hurt lol) so if you're still selling them, I'd love to purchase!
The extra two pins that you mentioned are used in the Yahoo! Hit Clips Downloader. It's a user recorable clip, and it uses the extra pins as an audio in.
I don’t wanna see TitanicFan97 commented on this video ever. EVER!! Because he has been collecting his one and on put favorite 90s Titanic film on VHS. I hope he gets his hands on a Celine Dion My Heart Will Go On HitClip!
Hey, I'm here to say to you that I love yours video 😍 They are great, and today I rewatch the two about the T9 keyboard because I love that two in particular. Keep doing them, they are great! (Sorry for my bad English, it's not my mother tongue...)
Would it be possible to make a version of this that 'fits in the hit clips disk players? I know that the hardware is pretty much compatible and those players could play original hit clips if you put them in right. I just think it might be interesting to have a version of the plastic case that takes the form of the later format.
Ever since I got my beta unit, i've had fun just listening to the cupple files at a time I can fit on when it comes to full length songs. I've reloaded it several times with new audio, and also found a strange audio speed issue. Songs appear to play slightly too slow, as if a file speed change was applied to decrease it by about 2 to 3 percent. This would be the equivalent of me setting the rotation speed for my record player slightly low so that the music runs slow and half way between the original key and the half step below. I also thought it would be interesting to load on full length original versions of songs that were originally on the format, so that's what I did with 2 songs that I own in their original form and on original hit clips.
It's entirely possible that I didn't match up the playback speed perfectly when I first got the code working. But the good news is that it's easily adjustable! In the code.py file on the drive, there's a line (around line 112) that says "frequency = 25100000". That's what sets the clock speed of the playback driver. You can raise it a bit and just save the file. Thanks for the feedback, I can update the the code that goes out with units in the future.
@@GuyDupont I fixed the code file yesterday with a new value of 25469195 for frequency and now my unit plays almost exactly at the source speed of the files. It's less than 1 hz off when it came to my tests with a test tone beep. What I ended up doing was creating a 1000 hz testing tone, saving that to the clip, then playing it to figure out what the frequency ended up being. It ended up being around 985.5 hz. So with this in mind, I figured out the percentage increase required to bring that to the original 1000, then scaled it up to apply to the clock speed variable in the code. This brings it super close but not exactly to the source file speed, but unless people are trying to play original files and the cartridge one at the same time, the slight difference would not be enough to make anybody notice anything.
If you want me to make some Kidz bop hitclips please make some, from the early albums of Kidz bop on hitclips (60 second only) if not I’ll make my own. TBH I’m A Kidz bop fan! 😉

I actually bought one! But also, a maker by the name of Joe Grand already kinda nailed it, you can find his video by searching "tooth tunes hack" (I'd link you but YT doesn't like that). I still want to do something with mine though, I'm thinking maybe BlueTooth Tunes 😁
Now that I have gotten a chance to experience hit clips disks, I'm wondering if one of the features from those could be brought to the hot clasp. 'Basically the disk format supports repeate playback up to 3 times if the player button is held for a few seconds. This doesn't work on original clips but I know of something that does that leads me to think something of this nature could work. If you hold the button while inserting an original hit clip into a player, it will loop a test beep for a time. I'm wondering if either repeate playback or auto file advance could be a feature in hot clasps if you hold the button while starting playback..
It's almost the same thing, just with up to 2 minutes of audio in the same 8 khz pwm as the originals. The pin layout should be the same because the later players support the old clips by way of a piece of plastic near the contacts being removed from the player so that an open space between the closed top cover and side of the unit create a slot that fits the originals. On closer inspection of the disks I don't know that it will even be possible to build a hot clasp in that form factor with the current parts being used on the boards.
It would be possible - it would sound a little bit better for the old clips, and a whole lot better for mine. I actually did manage to find an official player with a headphone jack after shooting the video.
I sure hope that in future, the micro sd card support can be added back. The pins on my debugger got damaged, so I'm not able to load myne with new files. I would assume that the debugger is not a standard piece of equipment and was designed for this particular board?
The debugger and cartridge were designed together by me, so neither is "standard" in that regard. It's the best system I could come up with that fits the space constraints - they are definitely fragile and that is not ideal. So I also hope to add an SD card back, it would simplify a lot, but it takes up an entire half of a cartridge! In the meantime, I am happy to send you a replacement debugger.
@@GuyDupontIs there anything I need to do to get this going? I bought my beta unit some months ago and am wondering if I'll need to give shipping info and stuff like that.
@@GuyDupont If the sd card hardware takes half a cartridge, why not make a second design that makes the case longer to handle a longer, built in board? This was the approach that tiger originally took to build both the fm radio and recordable cartridges. The fm radio uses the extra length for the reset and scan buttons comon with simple digital scanner radios, and it still has the key ring in the corner. The recordable on the other hand was actually longer than the fm radio cartridge before you take into account the antena length, and it has hardware inside for a simple audio recorder that has a record and stop button. They didn't put the key ring on it though. These both have actuall screws holding them together unlike original clips so with the right small screw drivers it is possible to take them apart safely. Sure you needed a special player that came with the recorder to record music from your computers speaker or headphone output, but it does play back with any hit clips player, even if it sticks out like a usb drive in anything that isn't the player it came with and is designed to fit in. Even the fm radio sticks out like a thumb drive and it was always marketed as being designed fir the micro players and boomboxes.
This is amazing but I would suggest NEVER using solder on the pads it’ll destroy the pins and corrode them. The solder will oxidize fast within a month or two and stop working as well.
Yeah thanks, I kinda figured that going in - this original design was experimental to say the least. I have since completely redesigned the hardware around the RP2040 and no longer have that floating PCB on top.
Hey Guy, can you do a video showing how to transfer audio directly from a hit clip to Mac to digitize the audio? I want to salvage the mix with minimum quality loss, but I don't know where to start.
Hey! The beta units for sale are a bit different from the one I demo here. I had to sacrifice the SD card for a smaller integrated flash chip. It holds a bit more than ~10mins of audio (there's about 12 mb free when I ship them). Feel free to cancel if you were hoping for more storage! Hoping to revise and bring the SD card back at some point.
@@GuyDupont how would I load the Flash chip with audio? Does it have any kind of data port or anything? Also what kind of format (sampling rate and bit depth) does the system Support for input audio?
Not sure if URLs will work here, but the setup instructions are available at: hotclasps.com/setup To directly answer: The cartridge ships with a USB adapter that you'll use to plug in to your computer. The cartridge will show up as a disk drive, and you just drag and drop your files. The file format is a custom one, but it's basically an 8-bit, 24khz wav file. You can convert any existing audio file to that format (I call it .htclp) by following the instructions on the link above. There is no audio input on this model, you can only play the files you load on.
@@GuyDupont The set up instructions make sence to me, but the part when removing the board from the shel is unclear because the instructions aren't descriptive enough. The reason I point this out is because I'm blind and can't see pictures. Also, do you know the spesificks on what kind of internal sound format is contained in the converted sound files? I have figured out that it can't be pcm, because hit clips never used pcm, instead they use pwm. I want to be able to build the audio files without using the web converter if possible. The reason I'm asking about format information is because I can't figure anything out by importing my file into media info to find out the particular atributes and type of audio contained within it.
Thanks for the feedback on the instructions, I can work on improving those! If you're asking about the cartridges that I made - the audio is saved on disk as 8-bit PCM, though the ordering of the bits is a little different from a normal wav file - that's why I call it .htclp instead of .wav. The microcontroller inside my cartridge converts the PCM data to a PWM signal at playback time, right as each sample is emitted. I can't speak to exactly how the original cartridges are storing their data, but they are definitely outputting a similar PWM signal. And both my cartridges and the originals are actually splitting the PWM signal between two pins depending on the sample value. So if the sample is a "negative" value, the PWM is applied to one pin, and if it's a "positive" value, it is applied to the other. This must have allowed them to save money on the players somehow.
I'm honestly considering it, but: 1. A quality player will not make the old cartridges sounds good. Those are cursed forever. 2. I'm just not sure how compelling a full high quality system is as a project/product? For me, the fun in what I made is that the cartridges are backwards compatible with existing toys. I'm not sure people actually miss playing music from cartridges? I could be wrong though. I'll probably design a player regardless.
@@GuyDupont you be surprised. I still use an mp3 player than my phone since it save more battery life on my phone. I wouldn't mind using them since the simplicity behind then are more interesting. Still you should make an upgraded sound system for it since you can make your own clips.
Was watching live the makercast you called out, and was wondering when you would come up with the stuff. Congrats. Oh, I would love to learn more about this glas clear 3d prints. Any chance?
I would but I have to figure out a better way to source the cases. Getting them 3D printed is a little expensive, and they're a bit fragile. I'm looking into alternatives tho.

Whats up with the hanging weed
Is it safe to say that follow up video you mentioned will never come out? That would be nice to see
Yeah, I had a baby so things have been slow moving! I did a second version of the clips and still plan to do a follow-up
@@GuyDupont aww congrats on your new born! and I can’t wait to see the follow up video.. would also like to buy one from you if possible.
hi! are you still making these?
Yes - currently in process of purchasing a large batch. It's taking a while, unfortunately!
@@GuyDupont awesome! signed up!
If the original units have bad quality ti them, why not upgrade the system as well?
I'm honestly considering it, but:
Tofu Cigarette is a banger
Definitely. Their newer stuff is killer too
Is it still sold?
Yeah, just out of stock currently. Should be back in a few weeks.
Was watching live the makercast you called out, and was wondering when you would come up with the stuff. Congrats. Oh, I would love to learn more about this glas clear 3d prints. Any chance?
I just ordered from PCBWAY, got the UTR-8100 finish. And they just showed up like this!
@@GuyDupont pcbway did deliver those plastic cases?
Yep. I uploaded my model, and they printed/shipped the cases
@@GuyDupont ok, thanks
yo can i buy one?
Super cool! Now make it flac compatible jk
I'm actually looking into it lol
Would you be willing to sell these? Like we request a song or album and you create and sell? I feel like this could be a big deal
I would but I have to figure out a better way to source the cases. Getting them 3D printed is a little expensive, and they're a bit fragile. I'm looking into alternatives tho.
I would love to commission a custom song and purchase one of your hit clips ! I submitted a google form looking forward to your response any further updates !
Feel free to reply to this comment with price or best way to reach out I know it takes time so trying to order for future gift! Thanks again !
Just saw you reply to another comment about taking it slow due to your new baby! Congrats and I’ll keep my eye to the mailing list looks like there’s quite a few of us that are interested lol
Are you selling these
Working on it. I'll have an update video here hopefully later in the summer
hey man could i pay you to make like 20 of these? ive been searching for someone who makes custom hitclips for YEARS
I need to clean up the design a bit, but I am planning to make them publicly available in the coming months. Working on it!
@@GuyDupont awesome! around how much do you think you'll charge per unit?
@@TellYourFriends that's gonna depend on how easy I can make the assembly, and if/which components are available at the time. Hard to even give a ballpark figure tbh 😬
@@GuyDupont any updates?
@@TellYourFriends yep! I designed a version 2 that works much better. I have to do one more revision (at least) to get the details right. But! I just had a baby so moving slow.
So was thinking about this shit last year , sad I found it now lol
