- Virginia Carmichael, a 100-year-old knitter, has been making baby sweaters and blankets for newborns in need for many years. She goes to Westside Baby in West Seattle to see what happens after she donates them. (Ellen M. Banner/The Seattle Times)
I know this is an older video, but I wanted to say how precious this lady is. Once she was young and took care of her family, no doubt had children, etc. Now, she is giving back. What an example for we younger ones. The Bible tells the older women to teach the younger women. I believe that is what she is doing, as well helping so many precious babies.
Ah bless her. My mother last knitted for me when she was 100 yrs old. She knitted me a ribbed cowl. Nowadays at nearly 103(!) and with advanced Ahzeimers, she can only knit a few rows.

this lady knows the value of delayed gratification. That, it seems to me, is the secret to joy in life: mastery through delayed gratification. Which is why knitting and learning to play an instrument is so rewarding.
You are my inspiration. I am 80 and have been hooked on knitting since 8.
The woman reminds me of my grandma. When she was 15 she wanted to give me a knitted sweater. But at the time I didn't want this because I was afraid of losing recognition in the group. It wasn't fashion back then. I still have memories of how she knitted. Today she is dead. I am 50 years old and am developing an interest in knitting with a knitting machine.
At that time she was probably a little sad that I couldn't appreciate her effort. This is how times and values change.
What a thoughtful and kind lady. After all her years, she still wants to give to others and make herself useful! Thank you Virginia!!!

Dearest Virginia, my beloved Grama knitted over 90 yrs, living to 97. She has her flower gardens, gifting to so many and scarves, hats, mittens, all of which many I still have (when I realized the importance of saving for her future generation) and her final piece I saved special along with the last ball of verigated yarn I wrapped into a ball. How blessed are the babies who will be warmly dressed by your loving handiwork, and the gift you are to our world. 🙏🏼🌹🌹🌹🙏🏼 Thank you 😍😘🤗😃💝👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼💋

I m the opposite I think crochet is harder cant get used to one hook rather than two needles, but crocheted items are lovely.
UA-cam everyone! Trust me! And be patient with yourselves. I knit and crochet but struggled a long long time to get good. Couldn’t figure out knitting for over a decade. UA-cam really changed it all for me. That and help from my mother.

Wow, you are so inspirational! People who sit and worry about getting Alzheimer's when life is about doing. My father died of Alzheimer's so I am older now than he was when dementia began for him. I also am an avid knitter. Knitting is actually good for the brain's blood circulation as the blood is drawn from the brain stem and flows through the brain to its surface under the skull. This is what controls the hands. So whatever we are doing with our hands from typing to doing dishes to gardening or knitting, just don't stop doing. Life is about doing for others and having the giving spirit, is good for the souls who live to give. God bless you, lovely lady!

I do this. Makes great gifts. Something I just enjoy doing. I really love making the set, sweater, hat, and bootie set. I also do the Afghans with fleece on the backside of some of mine for extra warmth.
