I was sick in May as well for 2 weeks, and still have a cough. Beautiful guitar great video. PS I’m in BKLYN NY. Hope this isn’t a yearly occurrence of being/getting sick.
I've settled on a this custom set of gauges lately: 46, 36, 25, 16, 12.5, 9.5. That's four strings from a pack of Ernie Ball Turbo Slinkys, with a single nickel wound 25 from D'Addario and a 12.5 from Curt Mangan. I couldn't find a 12.5 from any other brand, but it really just feels right to me and the set has a remarkably natural feeling tension curve overall. Do I wish I could get all those gauges from one brand? Yep. But there's also something very rewarding about arriving at the perfect hodgepodge set through trial and error. 25.5 scale, standard E tuning. Might try switching that 36 to a 35 in the future.
Andre, the trick to zero string noise is a tone bender gated so hard that the string noise can’t get through the circuit. It may be international string change day, but every day is fuzz day.
im not really a good guitarist, but i have found customizing the strings helps a lot for both playability and sound. can also fake a baritone guitar by putting really heavy strings on a regular guitar. did that to a squire jazzmaster i got in a trade and im surprised on how well that worked
much love bro really preciate your atention and detail to the most alien world of guitars, i've waited so long for a channel like yours that i thought it would never happen, but here you are, your very informative material is NECESARY to the guitar world, truly, the most sincere thanks from a guitarist and newly guitar maker from the south of the world, hope to send you one of my guitars one day!
For years i used nowt but ernie ball 10 guage, playing metal and blues mainly. When i started messing around with jazz and chord melody i found I'd flub complex chords, or push the melody out of tune. I ended up settling on daddario XS 11 guage, not so heavy that i can't bend, but not so light that i had tuning issues. An extra benefit is that the XS strings are lightly coated, so they last longer and string noise is barely noticeable. Thanks for the vid, what a stunning guitar!
funnily enough i found this video while looking for something to listen to while changing the strings and setting up my old PRS SE custom that I havent touched in at least a decade. I'm a pretty different player than you and also compared to how i played when I got it - and so I've been thinking about selling it to replace it with some kind of 7 string death-metal monster type guitar. But before I decide that its not for me I wanted to give it a fair chance of a cleaning, new strings and a setup. So I just put on a D'Addario nickel 14-68 set tuned to Bb standard. I find the discussion of string gauge interesting. With the kind of high-gain stuff I do I've found that I get the biggest sound difference just from being able to play the most aggressively, and I've found that super-heavy strings let me play more forcefully with both hands while being able to stay fast and in control. Like I could pick a light or heavy gauge string equally fast in a simple tremelo, but when im picking hard the lighter strings move too much out of the way with each strike and it slows me down. it just feels more natural to my hands idk Anyway, great video and thats definitely the most fascinating guitar ive seen in a bit
My friend...nothing happens by accident. That guitar went to the best guitar player that could fully appreciate its uniqueness. Your story is called destiny! Enjoy.
D’addario makes good strings. I enjoyed them for years but I’ve been getting strings from Stringioy recently. They have good customer service, and I can get custom sets pretty easily( I got a custom set for “ostrich” tuning-all D.I do have some sets that I need to put on. I’m putting some Broadway roundwounds on a Jazzmaster. Great video as usual Dr. Fludd.
Hi Andre! After having this guitar for a year, you're going to be so spoiled. Nothing will be the same after. It's going to be a bummer when you have to give it back. It's going to be a wonderful year of playing though. Have fun with that man! Cheers!
Amazing looking guitar, and sounds great with Flatwounds. Congrats on winning the opportunity to play it for a year. I've also come to many of the same conclusions you have about strings, gauges, etc., and it was nice to hear you explain the reasons why. 👍
the flatwounds discussion was cool, i usually play metal and was struggling to see why some people swear by flatwounds when string noise is pretty integral to a lot of metal playing. the sound of amplified shrieking metal certainly does not contribute to a calm atmosphere for relaxed playing
LOVE this story/video, andre! i saw a post on facebook of you playing a casimi acoustic-i was pretty stoked for you (and even a bit envious)! this is SO FREAKIN' RAD-what an amazing opportunity to be a temporary steward of a matsuda! congrats, and glad you are feeling better, man .. . you've been working so damn hard to make all-things-guitar your livelihood, and you deserve this.
The one thing that I was concerned with about this guitar was when I watched your short you made of this model before the video came out. When you were moving it around, it was very noisy and the wood was creaking all the time. Is this a problem that you experience with the guitar, and why is it making those noises?
Of the strings I can easily pick up locally for my high-gain metal playing guitars (6 & 7), I've been using NYXLs for quite a while, and for the same reasons. I don't play incredibly often, but my apartment lacks central air, so there's lots of temperature changes, and these strings hold up the best over time for me. I still have a G string that simply won't stay in tune no matter what I do, but that has nothing to do with the strings, lol.
Hi Andre, just noticed that you took down your videos on the Mayones Duvell that you were having issues with - could you please clarify why the videos were removed?
Congratulations on getting to borrow the Matsuda. His designs are inspirational and that guitar specifically is a piece of functional art. It sounds wonderful in your hands.
Completely unrelated but I've been watching here and there on this channel and I just wanted to say I really dig the hair and slight facial hair style going on, I don't know it just fits your personality and music so well, feel me? Again random and unrelated but a little random positivity don't hurt ay, besides us dudes don't get no compliments so why not. Anyway, keep up the good work, my go to channel for unusual equipment in such "unnecessary" detail but it's just absolutely my typa content, long form and nitpicky, I'm much the same so just do your thing! If there is a guitar type that is absolutely bizarre and no one has a video on it I can always count on you not only having it but a 1h review no less with any possible detail one could ever ask for, absolutely phenomenal resource of a channel! 👍 Respect from Sweden!
If you’re playing metal, I think it’s important to have a guitar with 11s or 12s to be able to tune down and play with songs. Heavy strings just feel better tuned down too
interesting. i find it more difficult to play and "manage" electric guitar. makes sense, because i've played and written/performed on acoustic flat tops for 40+ years now. it's been quite the challenge to adjust to electric guitar .. .
Andre, I disagree that you had no business at that event. You're very humble, but you're also a fantastic musician, and have the door prize to show for it. Congratulations, professor.
im a total vintage style guitar guy really ive been playing my high modded 1964 jaguar for around 20 years now its my goto for 99% of what i play but ilove watching the modern guitars on your channel as i love guitar building and searching for perfect tone at least my opinion of it. great videos
i like the sound of flatwounds but they feel like rubbing my fingers on a chalk board and i hate the feeling ive checked out ground wounds which i dig but i just use normal strings. i use xs coated being an ex heroin addict im on a medication called methadone which causes me to sweat more than normal when its hot and ill burn through strings in a week or two i tried xs nano coated and it was life changing the strings stay bright until they dead they get floppy before they loose treble its great. i never break strings anymore and i play 9s and 10s i even bend huge and pull sharp on my jags trem.
Long-time flatwounder - not to be confused with flatearther - and Chromes are indeed as good as the best I’ve played and better than the comparably priced, in my fingers’ opinion. I even put them on my acoustic because string noise is just the skin being worn off. It certainly is distinctive.
I used to be so into string balance, and would make up my own string gauge too, this was way back when there were not the options available today. I used to hammer the pickup polepieces up or down on the poor single coils I used for decades to further fine tune this, but it for was balance and feel and it worked. They were quite heavy for the times (pre SRV) but I played for hours daily then
Hey Andre, just discovered your channel today and I am hooked. I hope to see a video of your '10th dentist' opinions on guitars. You know, everyone loves a thing but you don't to the ire of the rest. I'd love to hear your insights. I'll put myself on the line: I don't like Telecasters. Nothing wrong with them, I just think they are ugly.
You may have felt out of place compared to a bunch of musicians you felt were more talented than you, but I doubt any of them can teach like you do. Learning guitar from you feels like you're directly wired into my brain transferring the knowledge, and that's something to be proud of! Teaching is a skill, a very challenging one at that, and I'd argue it's one you've mastered. You might not be one of the best guitar players on the planet, but you're certainly one of the best guitar teachers in the world as far as I'm concerned, and your playing is still great!
Hey, that guitar just knocks my eyes out!! I’m just gorging on all the beautifully-crafted parts, form following function in an incredible dance. Sounds nice, too! A question: Since you use a plain G string, does the stepped bridge built for a wound G mis-intonate that string at the upper frets?
Life is a beautiful struggle. Your story speaks to the power of seizing opportunity and being present. So excited to see how your story develops around this beautiful instrument!
i would have loved to see yo play the same thing on another guitar also to hear the difference. your playing always sounds great that guitar was very piano like, but i want to hear its difference than one of your other guitars
Thank you! Honestly, it’s hard to hear differences between two guitars. We all sound like ourselves on whatever we play, which is why most of my reviews focus on how guitars feel and how they are built. I will say, this guitar as a very focused tone with a lot of midrange and high mid range. A bit nasally, but in a good way.
Very interesting eclectic guitar for a very eclectic player you were literally made for this opportunity . Can't wait to discover what you create with it thanks for this content !
That’s amazing!! Congratulations!! Question, do you find flat wound strings wear frets slower compared to round wounds? I’m blasting through frets and trying to slow that from happening.
14:55 ...and I thought the front of the guitar looked weird 🤔 Not hating on it, it's a funky, strangely elegant instrument...like some brilliant luthier in 1907 making something rad out of stuff he had lying around 🤪 I'm a Martin 13-56 bronze wound player for life but this video inspired me to maybe change things up a bit ✌️😑
Thanks for sharing this lovely guitar and your insight on choosing strings! I watched this while restringing my Ormsby Hype 7, not aware it is a D'Addario holiday :D. once done (and still watching), I went for your version of Fly Me to the Moon as the most appropriate piece of music for my axe and got laughing again when you played the same. As for string gauge choice, I go for feel; 'standard' 9-42 feels right only on multiscale, otherwise I go one or two sizes up on the wound side.
NGL for accoustics I settled on the silk & steel set long ago, but I've not played accoustic in a decade now xD And yeah, I play 9.5's cause they are easier to play than 10's but still have a bit of extra precense in the mids than the 9's.
Misleading title, it’s a half guitar for $25k!!! Absolutely love the video , watched every second of it. Hats off for you and for the arch top foundation ! Thanks !
d'addario sent me one of those tuners for a comment i left about how much the xs strings helped me out but its the battery version i wish it would have been re chargable
Also a small aside: I know flat wound are usually the strings to choice for fretless instruments most notably, fretless bass. Now this is probably not going to impact stainless steel frets much but the extra wear and tear on the frets and the fretboards and perhaps even the nut when using round wounds might be something to consider.
Maybe an odd question, but I'm sure you will know the answer. Is there a way to get rid of string noise on a classical guitar? Really irritating when it's amplified. Love that guitar!
That spray I used toward the end of the video is great for reducing string noise on any guitar, but apart from that, I don’t know a ton about the different types of nylon strings available.
Hey I wanted to let you know that Kiesel is doing a special and making the Holdsworth Fatboy again for a limited time. I know you love the fatboy do I wanted to let you know in case you want to order one.
are the D and G string spaced that way on purpose or did you just have them put unevenly on the bridge im watching you restring and the strings are not spaced evenly across the bridge
My Leduc U-Guitar sounds like a... high end acoustic guitar when played acoustically... But it's nowhere near as loud as Taylor... But sounds as great (!) and you can do way more with it than making Fender Acoustasonic or Godin Acousticaster owners look like fools to have bought it. The Matsuda acoustic sounds makes me more think about a shamisen, it just lacks a cat skin... This guitar is more art than anything else... I LOVE IT... Thus... $25k? NEVER! Unless I win the €million and since I'm not into gambling... I think the Matsuda sounds truly awesome, thus, lacks depth as an archtop. At the present day, the best sounding archtop I ever heard was made by Dutch luthier Daniel Salman... out of a... 65,000 years old kauri wood... He went as far as getting mammoth ivory to make parts for the guitar in order to be into a more ice-age feel... I didn't crossed the path of many instruments that made all of your body hairs straighten... It's one of these... The sound was not of this world, it was obviously from an ancient one... On such old wood kept under pressure ans anaerobia for so long, a good part of the wood has switched to a kind of crystaline phase... Well, Kauri is also known as Agathis... Would you expect agathis sounding that great? Not even remotely... Andre : You're not so an average guitar player. Gilmour is average... You're really an advanced player... I came to near the same conclusion as what ended the result of the Rick Beato strings tests: the 8-38 sets sound the best, BUT the big string lacks punch... So... I tried the Frank Zappa solution : replacing the 38 by a 46... and... YEEEEAH! Frank knew what he was doing... And there's a Zappa-signature set of strings... Sorry, it's not a d'Addario... They're gold plated... Which is better for me: skin issues with nickel... These are from Optima (Germany) I think I know a company able to make acoustic guitar flat wound strings: they're making my tapping factory strings and... The 23Hz Low F# is a .176"... You can order sets to your taste and it will be your signature strings sert... Ever heard abour Carlos Pavicich strings AKA... Skull Strings? (France)
It's absolutely none of my business but how do you afford so many guitars with most of them being 2000$ + I know you didn't buy this one but I'm still impressed with how many guitars you have
Could never put my finger on why I love flats so much.. aside from the tone, it’s definitely the string noise.. it’s like nails on a chalkboard for me.
Who made that thing- Pablo Picasso? Hey Andre I have a challenge for you. I know you use a lot of headless guitars. Do you think you could make your own double ball end strings? Is it even possible?
Another thing being - what if we wanted to use a different brand or string winding? The options are extremely limited if you want to change the feel of your strings.
Awesome story! Sounds like you're doing exactly what God meant for you to do and He worked that out just for you to let you know you're on the right track. 😉 Can't wait for the 2-hour full deep dive vid on this lol. Dig the channel!
@andrefludd Bad news Andre : the Vigier company has closed its doors. Patrice Vigier has decided to retire. They had already stopped to take orders in 2023... With Leduc who retired in 2023, I now feel like an orphan again... (I own 7 Vigiers and 6 Leducs)
What a great story--sounds like you owe @andypitcher big time! It seems like fate meant for you to get this guitar!
Saw Nguyen Le play this guitar live. Such a cool instrument. Thanks for featuring it, Andre!
I’m going to record a lot of music with it. Very exciting instrument to play.
you totally earned this enjoy it!
Wow, dude.
I don't know why it makes me so happy to see your pinky dancing as you finger pick.
Congratulations! You deserve this and I'm looking forward to hearing what you'll do with it.
Thanks Simon!
Andre! I am so glad you got that text hahah Wonderful to see it played and loved.
Thanks Andy!
Congratulations on winning the wresting match with the G string!!! I was transfixed throughout the battle.
I think I might have to look into getting some flatwounds.
You own this?! Matsuda is a genius! Beautiful guitar!
I also experimenting with mixing brands. I never found it matter in terms of tone so I think you clearly found the right solution for you!
Thomastik infeld flatwound are my absolute favorites. They are… pricey.
I was looking forward to this video as soon as I saw the shirt you made with it.
Wow, that ending sound blew my away! I've never heard something that warm and that chimey at the same time!
Thank you! It’s a great guitar
As an engineer considering a detour into lutherie… this is exactly my kind of guitar.
Wow, that guitar sounds so darn good!
What an awesome thing! You get to borrow a truly unique guitar, man! That's amazing.
You gotta get that thing insured man!
The archtop foundation handles that thankfully 😁
funnily enough i found this video while looking for something to listen to while changing the strings and setting up my old PRS SE custom that I havent touched in at least a decade. Came for the Parker stuff but hung around because of your in depth, honest and seemingly unnostalgic view of guitars.
Thanks for hanging with me

Always a great morning when Andre uploads, another eye-opener! Looks so sick
Thanks!
Hi Andre!

Cheers!
Hey man! Always nice to see you here. I'm going to have to play it a lot to make up for not having it forever.
Where is the new content on this guitar bro we need MORE
time for D(Day) tuning
Lucky you! Well deserved! Also would love a tutorial for Fly Me to the Moon 😉
There’s a full video with tab on my channel and you can download the tab for free. And the full lesson is on my course.
I can see it's in good hands! Great video, Andre. Use it in good health!
Amazing looking guitar, and sounds great with Flatwounds. Congrats on winning the opportunity to play it for a year.
I've also come to many of the same conclusions you have about strings, gauges, etc., and it was nice to hear you explain the reasons why. 👍
Thanks!
Thanks for sharing! It's beautiful!
Great story. And congratulations. I think you deserve it more than you know.
Thank you!
That is a beautiful instrument, don't know if i can put a price on something that cool.
I am so happy for you. Please record, and write, and share! Call in favors and put a band together, whatever works!
the flatwounds discussion was cool, i usually play metal and was struggling to see why some people swear by flatwounds when string noise is pretty integral to a lot of metal playing. the sound of amplified shrieking metal certainly does not contribute to a calm atmosphere for relaxed playing
Absolutely amazing! Such a cool concept foundation. Can't wait to see what you do with it this year! Well deserved 🎉
was the event at a guitar store? I live in Brooklyn, and I'm curious where it was ( I wouldn't have been invited of course haha)
No it was a gallery that was rented. I shouldn’t have been invited either lol

Wonderful instrument to behold. Thank you for sharing this beautiful piece with us
I cant seem to find flat wound strings for 8 string guitars unfortunately, but i understand because usually people treat it as a metal machine.
You can buy all types of gauges individually and make your own set
@@andrefludd I'm not sure why I never thought of that, thank you.
Hi Andre, just noticed that you took down your videos on the Mayones Duvell that you were having issues with - could you please clarify why the videos were removed?

I usually don’t have an issue, but if need be I’ll change the bridge out. Since it’s floating, it won’t require any real modding
It is a very beautiful guitar
Sure is!
Personally I do like the sound “aesthetic” I guess of the string noise, but the flatwounds sound amazing, and that guitar looks extremely comfortable.
Life is a beautiful struggle. Your story speaks to the power of seizing opportunity and being present. So excited to see how your story develops around this beautiful instrument!

Question, do you find flat wound strings wear frets slower compared to round wounds? I’m blasting through frets and trying to slow that from happening.
"Really expensive flatwound strings that are like 50 60 dollars a pack"
Cries in bass player.
Cello players have it even worse 😂
14:55 ...and I thought the front of the guitar looked weird 🤔
Not hating on it, it's a funky, strangely elegant instrument...like some brilliant luthier in 1907 making something rad out of stuff he had lying around 🤪
I'm a Martin 13-56 bronze wound player for life but this video inspired me to maybe change things up a bit
✌️😑
Slience?
Thanks for sharing this lovely guitar and your insight on choosing strings!
I watched this while restringing my Ormsby Hype 7, not aware it is a D'Addario holiday :D. once done (and still watching), I went for your version of Fly Me to the Moon as the most appropriate piece of music for my axe and got laughing again when you played the same.
As for string gauge choice, I go for feel; 'standard' 9-42 feels right only on multiscale, otherwise I go one or two sizes up on the wound side.
But does it Djent?
We shall find out soon 😁
NGL for accoustics I settled on the silk & steel set long ago, but I've not played accoustic in a decade now xD And yeah, I play 9.5's cause they are easier to play than 10's but still have a bit of extra precense in the mids than the 9's.
Rock/blues players who use flat wound: Gary Clark Jr., Jimmy Vaughan, James Bay, Mark Speer
I didn't see Mr. Parkers name in the blue list, need to back up and slow it down but I think I would have seen his headstock a mile away.
If someone hasn’t played song for a blue guitar by red house painters on a blue guitar someone needs to make it happen.
God I love this. It looks so good. It does so much right.
Agreed!
That is a beautiful guitar and I was mesmerized by your playing as usual. So, do bassists change their strings on April 4th? (Asking for a friend)
Thank you! This holiday is for all string players!Bass and violin included.
@@andrefludd by the way love the story of how it came into, let's call it, your stewardship.
Underrated joke (everyone of course knows that bassists don't change their strings because they gain soul the older they get).
My birthday...Yeah...
Misleading title, it’s a half guitar for $25k!!!
Absolutely love the video , watched every second of it. Hats off for you and for the arch top foundation ! Thanks !
Thank you!
d'addario sent me one of those tuners for a comment i left about how much the xs strings helped me out but its the battery version i wish it would have been re chargable
Also a small aside: I know flat wound are usually the strings to choice for fretless instruments most notably, fretless bass. Now this is probably not going to impact stainless steel frets much but the extra wear and tear on the frets and the fretboards and perhaps even the nut when using round wounds might be something to consider.
I never thought of that! Very interesting idea.
lols. luv the OCD string change kit-layout fidgeting! :)
There’s Michi Matsuda … and there’s the rest of the planet.
I wanna hear you play some metal!!! Please!!!
Hey I wanted to let you know that Kiesel is doing a special and making the Holdsworth Fatboy again for a limited time. I know you love the fatboy do I wanted to let you know in case you want to order one.
Thank you for letting me know!
are the D and G string spaced that way on purpose or did you just have them put unevenly on the bridge im watching you restring and the strings are not spaced evenly across the bridge
The nut is a bit weird and I wasn’t paying enough attention so at times the string isn’t in the slot, but I did fix it all eventually.
These are from Optima (Germany)
I think I know a company able to make acoustic guitar flat wound strings: they're making my tapping factory strings and... The 23Hz Low F# is a .176"... You can order sets to your taste and it will be your signature strings sert... Ever heard abour Carlos Pavicich strings AKA... Skull Strings? (France)
It's absolutely none of my business but how do you afford so many guitars with most of them being 2000$ + I know you didn't buy this one but I'm still impressed with how many guitars you have
Apart from a select few, most of my guitars are sold or traded within 3-12 months and I only buy if it’s a really good deal.
@@andrefludd oh ok I thought you actually keep them all
Could never put my finger on why I love flats so much.. aside from the tone, it’s definitely the string noise.. it’s like nails on a chalkboard for me.
Who made that thing- Pablo Picasso? Hey Andre I have a challenge for you. I know you use a lot of headless guitars. Do you think you could make your own double ball end strings? Is it even possible?
Double ball end strings are on the market already, But not every headless guitar accepts them.
I think it’s pretty much only Steinbergers that take them.
@@andrefludd Yes they are but I am not sure they're still available for the Steinberger Transcale. That's the one I have
Another thing being - what if we wanted to use a different brand or string winding? The options are extremely limited if you want to change the feel of your strings.
what is taking so long with that d string haha
Awesome story! Sounds like you're doing exactly what God meant for you to do and He worked that out just for you to let you know you're on the right track. 😉 Can't wait for the 2-hour full deep dive vid on this lol. Dig the channel!
Thank you!
@andrefludd Bad news Andre : the Vigier company has closed its doors. Patrice Vigier has decided to retire. They had already stopped to take orders in 2023...
With Leduc who retired in 2023, I now feel like an orphan again... (I own 7 Vigiers and 6 Leducs)
lol string change day? what will these corporations come up with next.
