The song was released in 1974. The artists mentioned are Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Otis Redding, Jim Morrison, Jim Croce & Bobby Darin. The lyrics were updated in the 1990's Righteous Brothers performances to include mentions of artists who had passed after 1974 - John Lennon, Elvis Presley, Karen Carpenter, Dennis Wilson (of the Beach Boys), Jackie Wilson & Marvin Gaye. Since then, one of the Righteous Brothers, Bobby Hatfield, has gone to "Rock & Roll Heaven". As tribute to Hatfield, Bill Medley (the other Righteous Brother) when performing this song, has changed the lyrics to "If there's a rock & roll heaven, then Bobby's got a hell of a band."

Few people know that this song is actually a cover. "Rock and Roll Heaven" is a song written by Alan O'Day and Johnny Stevenson, popularized by The Righteous Brothers. It is a paean to several deceased singers such as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Otis Redding, and has been rewritten a number of times to include other singers. The song was first recorded by the band Climax in 1973, but it failed to chart. It was then covered by The Righteous Brothers in 1974 and reached number three on the U.S.

1974, the year of my birth, so long ago, and still so powerful...a love song to rock. It was a VERY timely song, as it came on the heels of the deaths of Jim Croce and Bobby Darin who both died late in 73. If they would have held off a bit longer, they could have included Mama Cass who died the summer of '74...all of this pre-dated the deaths of Elvis (77), Ronnie Van Zant (Lynyrd Skynyrd, 77), Keith Moon (The Who, 78), and the 1980 deaths of Bon Scott (AC/DC), John Bonham (Led Zeppelin) and John Lennon.

"Soul And Inspiration" is the best Righteous Brothers song left. It is notable because they had left their producer Phil Spector, and Bill Medley took the producer chair and put out a record with every bit as fantastic a sound as any Spector production.
The Righteous Brothers get categorized as "blue-eyed soul." With that in mind let me bring up some other acts to check out:
The Rascals (a/k/a The Young Rascals) put out several hits in the late 60s. "People Got To Be Free" was a number one. "It's A Beautiful Morning" followed up "Groovin" with beautiful vocals. Also listen to "Lonely Too Long" and "What Is The Reason."
The Box Tops had that Memphis sound with "Soul Deep" and "Cry Like A Baby." Their singer was Alex Chilton, a legendary character.
Mitch Ryder And The Detroit Wheels had high energy rock and soul with "Jenny Take A Ride" "Sock It To Me" and "Devil With A Blue Dress On." Heavy Little Richard influence with these Detroiters.

I hope to see you dive deeper into Brenda Lee's rabbit hole, she who sold the most charted hits throughout the 60's of any female vocalist, and 4th overall behind only Elvis, the Beatles and Ray Charles. Brenda Lee is still alive and active! She became famous in the south from live radio appearances in the mid 50's when she was about 9 or 10 years old and became nationally famous at 13. She sang different genres and was one of the pioneers (literally one of the first) to do rockabilly. When you do get back to her, may I suggest her "Dynamite - 1957". It's very short, but I promise you it will knock your socks off.

I enjoyed it because I was 14 when I first heard them in 64. Had a terrific time and it was a moment we both still talk about!!

I am curious on how many references J and Amber pick up on who are members of the rock and Roll Heaven Band mentioned here. PS I know Bobby has brought his amazing voice into the Band. I bet they cover his "Unchained Melody" up there since he arrived. Sing on Bobby!!!!
Addendum: Good job guys. It must be fun to have a whole new set of knowledge to pick from in such a short time. We picked it up gradually while you two are getting a massive dose. We changed with this music as it changed. I wonder how it will effect you. Do you feel changed?

So glad you finally did this one. I've been recommending it for a couple years. It was my dad's favorite song by The Righteous Brothers, so as I listened again for the first time in so long, I couldn't help but think of Pop up there enjoying the show. Thank you.
As for my recommendation this time, I have to suggest my own favorite by them. "You're My Soul and Inspiration." Such a beautiful song, I know you'll both love it.

This song was a hit in 1974. It was written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, the same two who wrote "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" (with Phil Spector) and the Righteous Brothers' follow-up to "Lovin' Feelin'," "Just Once In My Life," which only one or two reactors have ever done a reaction video to. The Righteous Brothers actually broke up in 1967, a year after their big hit, "(Youre My) Soul and Inspiration," and Bobby continued under the Righteous Brothers name with Jimmy Walker (from the Knickerbockers). But they didn't have any hits and disbanded in 1971. Meanwhile, Bill had a solo hit in 1968 called "Brown Eyed Woman" about interracial relationships that was released around the time of the Supreme Court's ruling in the Loving v. Virginio case in which interracial marriage was declared legal. There's a great video of it on UA-cam where he sings with the girls group The Blossoms on an appearance on The Playboy Channel. Fast forward to 1974 and Bob and Bill got back together and released "Rock and Roll Heaven," a tribute to a number of famous recording artists who died much too young. ("Jimi gave us Rainbows," a reference to Jimi Hendrix; "Janis took a piece of our heart," a reference to Janis Joplin; "Otis brought us all to the dock of the bay," a reference to Otis Redding; "Sing a song to light my fire, remember Jim that way," a reference to Jim Morrison of the Doors; "Remember Bad, Bad Leroy Brown, remember Jimmy touched us with that song," a reference to Jim Croce, "And Bobby gave us Mac the Knife, look out he's back in town," a reference to Bobby Darin. This was their last big hit together. "Unchained Melody" was re-released when it was hot because of the movie "Ghost." But Bob and Bill never had another hut together as a duo. But there are a few Righteous Brothers songs you have get to listen to. Their first hit, written by Bill Medley, was "Little Latin Lupe Lu," (pronounce "loopy"). A rock song, really, very different from their blue-eyed soul songs that made them so well-known. As I mentioned, there's "Just Once In My Life," and Bobby had one other solo hit called "Ebb Tide." Unfortunately,, there no live performance of him singing it on UA-cam. Don't be fooled by the guy who looks and even sounds a lot like him who's on UA-cam. He's an imitator, n ot the real deal. But you can hear the studio recording of "Ebb Tide" on UA-cam, and it's an excellent example of Phil Spector's "Wall of Soound" production technique that he was so well-known for. There's also a performance of "Summertime" on UA-cam that Bobby performs solo, which is a barn burner. And you really must hear their version of "You'll Never Walk Alone," a version of which by Gerry and the Pacemakers is, to this day, the theme song for one of the big soccer teams in the UK.
As you may know, since Bobby died in 2003, Bill has continued to perform as half of the Righteous Brothers with his new partner, Bucky Heard, and they play Las Vegas. Bucky is certainly not Bobby Hatfield, but he does a credible job singing with Bill. I listened to Bucky's solo album and was surprised to hear that he did a FANTASTIC job with the song, "Somewhere (There's A Place for Us)." You might oughta check it out. It's beautiful. ua-cam.com/video/0cCDoLQ6HS4/v-deo.htmlsi=ECiwnw84Q6eG_AMK

Beg pardon, but "Rock & Roll Heaven" was written by Alan O'Day and Johnnn Stevenson, "Soul and Inspiration" was written by Mann-Weil.

The late songwriter, hit making artist Alan O Day co-wrote this song. The group Climax first recorded this song with very little chart action. Fifties band Flash Cadillac and the Continental Kids also covered this tune with different lyrics about rock and soul artists that passed in the 50's.
