we grow about 15 varieties of citrus here in my home in So Cal. Dekopon for me is ok. i havent had one that has impressed me. For me, cara cara is tastier than dekopon. but the king of all citrus is Shasta Gold. Tahoe Gold is a close second. then Washington Navel 3rd. hopefully next season i will do a citrus taste test of all my fruit from our trees

That is awesome and thanks for the information. We are going deep into the citrus rabbit hole and the Sumo farm we interviewed said that most homegrown dekopons are underwhelming unless grown to a really high standard. We will be making content to citrus in the future. We have 4 trees of Shiranui mandarin (2 different root stocks), 1 Tahoe Gold mandarin, 1 Dobashi Beni satsuma, 1 Oro Blanco, and hopefully some more soon. Is there a specific cultivar of Cara Cara you recommend or do you know the rootstock? I've learned that rootstock affects the flavor of the fruit in citrus.

@@WhatPlantisthatPaul My Cara Caras are grafted onto a 12 year old acidless lime seedling from mexico. I have noticed that the cara caras and ortanique tangors on that same tree have an intoxicating aroma of sweet vanilla citrus. my cara cara has excellent flavor btw. the cara caras from gless ranch and some of the farmers markets around us that i have tasted are very respectable. Dekopon is a strange variety. i have it grafted on that same acidless lime rootstock. it his extremely vigorous, and super productive. the first season, it produced about 15-20 giant fruits. its second season it produced 50+ large fruits. the ones from the store are marbles compared to mine. dekopon was grafted 6/20. perhaps all it needs is time for the fruits to get better. i also have a shiranui in the ground on Carrizo. planted in 11/21. didnt do anything in 2022. i will give it another 2 or 3 years before i decide to graft over it with another variety lol
