    My oldest citrus is my Moro, and the color and flavor is the most complex.
    Definitely my favorite.

      Thanks, Josh. Yeah, the Moro was very delicious, these fruits came from Spain and Italy, so have perfect growing conditions, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to grow blood oranges this good here, but it’s not going to stop me from trying 😂

      @@PeterEntwistle Even mine with very hot Summers and mild wet Winters don't develop the color that I see elsewhere. As you mention in the video, the pigmentation is variable from fruit to fruit; about 25% of mine become very dark inside, the rest are about the same as the one you sliced open. But they always develop those raspberry notes in the flavor profile, which is very satisfying for cocktails and desserts and of course fresh eating.

    Interesting to see multiple varieties of blood orange. Although I've eaten blood oranges over the years, I'd have no idea what varieties they might have been. I'm doubtful if we could ever achieve fruits of that quality here in the UK on our own plants 😁

    • @PeterEntwistle
      @PeterEntwistle  Рік тому +3

      Yeah, these were all from either Spain or Italy according to My Exotic Fruit, which of course have the perfect climate for growing these. I’m also doubtful we’ll ever be able to grow blood oranges of this quality here. It not going to stop me from trying though 😂😂

      Yay!! I feel validated. I've knowingly tasted Moro & taroco-- love the Moro so much that I got the tree. Not impressed w taroco, think I've had sanguinelli but don't remember the taste. Sidenote: yuzu lemons are very cold hardy so y'all could grow in uk if you'd like to try it. And do a lemon tasting😅. I have Meyer, yuzu & pink lemon trees.

    I find blood orange great tasting in ice cream Peter, but did not realise there was such a wide range of blood oranges available. I am growing a Sanguinelli orange for the first time because it appears from back ground reading that it is hardier than a Navel orange. I just hope I can get it past the winter to come.

    • @PeterEntwistle
      @PeterEntwistle  Рік тому

      That sounds good Mike, I’ll have to try some with ice cream sometime. My 2 Sanguinelli trees did well in the greenhouse this winter.

    So cool Peter. What coincidence that we both release orange tasting videos on the same day 😂
    All fruits look beautiful and tasty. and the findings in your tasting is exactly why I purchased the Moro blood orange i.e the colour, the berry taste etc. I think its a 'must have' variety for those that love growing citrus .
    Great video . Thanks for sharing

      Haha yeah, I filmed this on Sunday, but only got around to finishing off editing it today lol.
      To be honest they were all excellent tasting fruits. I wasn't disappointed with any of them, it's only when you taste them next to each other that you can see the difference. The last one I had was less red and berry-like but was one of the sweetest and juiciest oranges I've had in a while. I'd be happy if I was able to grow some like any of these. That being said the Moro I had was so berry-like I really want one now lol 😂. I'll have to keep an eye out to see if the citrus centre gets any more in stock at some point.

      @PeterEntwistle  Рік тому

      @@MoebiusUK Yeah, I had the email notifications turned on, it came back in stock after you got one then a day or so later they were out of stock again lol. I was considering getting one then, but I'd already just bought a bunch of new citrus so thought I'd leave it a bit.
      Haha, yeah I've no idea how you managed to get all your new purchases into your garden lol 😂. My patio is getting very cluttered now. I'm going to have to move some plants around into other areas of the garden.

    How fun!! I was hoping the Sanguinelli would come out on top as that's the one I've just bought 😆 The Moro sounds and looked wonderful.

    • @PeterEntwistle
      @PeterEntwistle  Рік тому

      Thanks, Dani! Haha yeah, I was also hoping the same as it's the only one I have the tree of. That being said it was still a really good-tasting blood orange. If I hadn't had the others after I wouldn't have realised how strong the berry flavour was in the others. The Sanguinelli was like a really good orange with a little bit of raspberry flavour mixed in.

    • @backyardsnackyard
      @backyardsnackyard Рік тому +1

      @@PeterEntwistle I wonder if that raspberry flavour gets stronger as the oranges get redder because Moros are meant to be the reddest of blood oranges. I hope some Moro trees come up for sale, not that I have space for more plants 🙈😆

    • @PeterEntwistle
      @PeterEntwistle  Рік тому

      @@backyardsnackyard yeah, it does appear that the redder the fruit the more raspberry flavour it gets. Yeah, I also want a Moro now and have no space for any more citrus 😂

    Cool video, although don’t get to disheartened. I believe the pigmentation is a result of cold stress, and the taste of citrus varies so much. Personally I think the best citrus comes from South Africa (I might be killed for that)

    • @PeterEntwistle
      @PeterEntwistle  Рік тому

      To be honest the Sanguinelli was really good, I was just slightly spoilt by some of the others lol. You are right though the pigmentation can vary a lot, so it's possible to get more or less red (and probably berry flavour) in any of the varieties. I think the Moro is known for being reliably one of the darkest though. I think I've had some mandarins from South Africa, they definitely have a suitable climate for growing well there.

    Out of interest, did you have any luck germinating and growing the Moro seeds? Enjoyed the taste comparison, my Sanguinelli’s are absolutely covered in blooms currently, and my Tarocco has buds developing.

    • @PeterEntwistle
      @PeterEntwistle  7 місяців тому

      Hey, thanks for watching. One of the Moro blood orange seeds did germinate, but it didn’t really grow much and the leaves have now dropped off it. I did manage to get hold of a grafted Moro blood orange tree which I have in my greenhouse at the moment along with my sanguinelli and other citrus trees. Some of them are just starting to develop some growth and flower buds.

    Good taste test video, Peter. I've never heard of the 'Ippolito' variety before. It would not surprise me of there were many more different blood orange varieties out there. By the way: which agency did you say I had to register with in order to pre-notify the Defra/Plant Health Inspector of an imminent plant import arrival? (in to prevent my plants from being held in the Customs depot for days, even weeks).

    • @PeterEntwistle
      @PeterEntwistle  Рік тому +1

      Thanks, Gary, yeah there are loads of varieties out there. I’d also not come across it before either. It was a pretty good blood orange.
      The system you have to go through now is called IPAFFS. What are you ordering and where from, out of interest? I think the process might be slightly different for non-EU countries, but always worth giving them a call for clarification over the process of pre-notifying. If you search “pre-notify IPAFFS” you should find the .gov site.

      @@PeterEntwistle I have not made my mind up on what exactly I want to get yet, but an avocado variety is definitely among the potential 'candidates'. Either Canarius or Top Tropicals. Plantogram ship internationally and have some interesting plants on offer, but their prices are a bit steep.

    • @PeterEntwistle
      @PeterEntwistle  Рік тому

      @@garycard1456 you might want to check if you can import avocado trees, I’ve heard they are restricted completely from being imported. I couldn’t find anything specifically for Persea americana, but other species in the Persea genus are not allowed to be brought in for disease reasons.
