@@thecocktailian2091It kinda seems like Maesters are like librarians who're afraid that internet would make their books obsolete.
Or in other case, those who opposed the printing press. Prior to it, books were copied by hand they were rare works only available to select few. They found the great secret of power in westeros : you do not want to be the leader, since there will come a day when that leader loses their power and likely their life. But if you are the trusted advisor everywhere you have more power then each of them,, and when they get replaced the new lord will still need you. So you lose nothing. Leaders come and go but you stayx right where you are. You assure that it stays that way by raising the next generation of leaders.

As a nerd, I can't help but view the maesters as something of a intellectual power fantasy. Being prized and appreciated for your learning and viewed as being vitally important to any house, might be a dreamy fantasy for people used to being criticised as know-it-alls. I doubt every maester is privy to the broader goals and long-term objectives of the Citadel at the grand strategy level, there are probably many maesters who are just well-meaning, educated people. People who genuinely find fulfillment and take pride in helping others be the best they can. Indeed, maesters are not only the accountants and scribes of the realm, I also view them as somewhat analogous to a basic form of a Human Services organisation.

The Grand Maester that served in the reign of Aerys I (when Bloodraven was Hand/ Master of Whisperers/ briefly Lord Protector of the Realm) was said to be 'steeped in sorcery' - there's really only ever been a couple along the lines of he & Marwyn.
I shouldn't wonder if the former survived because he was aligned with Bloodraven (& who knows what his fate was, after the Hand's exile)- & the latter is clearly travelling a lot, so in some ways- he's serving a purpose, in bringing back knowledge & information- but also, he doesn't really seem to have had much in the way of roots/ connection to the newer generation, until recently- Alleras is considered 'a follower' of Marwyn, & he's now taken a passing interest in Sam- but do the rest of the Maesters take it seriously, given how much he comes & goes?
Surely, if they did- he wouldn't have made Grand Maester status. And if they _really_ saw him as a threat, they'd find a way to take him out- no matter how cautious he was...?

Great vid as always IDG and spot on as usual. A magic-free world is the eventual goal of the masters and they have been and will continue to be active in that process ; even if they do their best to never seem culpable. The maesters do some beneficial things for the realm - learning , healing , communication etc. But given their Hightower origins, patronage and HQ in close proximity to them , should set off alarm bells. Knowingly or not they are the HT''s eyes and ears in every noble House in the realm and can be instructed to give advice in service to their overarching aims. The Citadel is at least partly a considerable arm of influence for the HTs , especially in regards to the nobility and such motivations must always be questioned.
And yes magic can be dangerous but i think the main wariness of it from the maesters is it threatens their role and importance. Who needs regular means of healing if magical versions are available or such learning if those with access can convey history and knowledge of a shared consciousness & information vault. Why listen to their strategy or advice if you command dragons , etc. The magical rejection to me seems due to magic being a massive threat to the maesters' position & influence. And not only the magic rejection but the rejection of more fringe ideas like the Alchemists' Guild / pyromancers , Qyburn ilk types and others is holding back general advancement ; technologically , medically and beyond. Again to me if such advancement occurred also threatens the reliance on the maesters. Couple that with their monopolization of knowledge which keeps the populace down and reliant on them. Widespread education and literacy threatens their role in that respect as well.
To me i view the Citadel as self-serving , deliberate and somewhat sinister in their motivations and actions.

    In light of this video,
I remember a line about Prince Rhaegar that even maesters were amazed by Rhaegar's wits even when he was only a child and turned towards becoming a Knight.
I think they realised that the child was moving independently of their guidance and coming to conclusions about things based on his own research. Rhaegar knew how to search for sources of information he sought independently on his own and piece together different data to get a better understanding of their world.
May be it wasn't just Blackfyre Varys alone operating to sow seeds of dissent between Aerys and Rhaegar, Father and son.
May be that's why Rhaegar never hated his Father even when he had gone completely bonkers. As a reader, I sensed respect for his Father within Rhaegar even before he went to meet Robert on Trident.
Prince had a sense of pride in being what he was... A Targaryen of Valyrian ancestry. Rhaegar is a key to the puzzle of the Story not just as only a biological vehicle to birth a Hero, but even as a Key person who almost had the right picture... But loved playing his cards too close to his chest like The Batman 😄
Look out for Rhaegar to defeat Maesters who are preventing change and progress through gate keeping taken to the next level 😅

It's a The Witcher lore topic that I can barely find ANY videos on, though I'm almost certain there must be more info to be found somewhere. The topic I had in mind is: The Gnomes. They're an "Elder race" I think, and they seemingly must have really advanced craft skills. The Gnomish weapons like the Gwyhir (spelling) are very valuable and quite powerful. I have yet to see a single one of them though, so I don't understand what the deal is there, maybe they're extinct I guess? I actually think the Eragon or Witcher idea of being anti magic, because it is a tool that is used to oppress people (like Varamir six skins etc) and that is a reason to want it’s elimination - like a Christian moral negation of power, rather than disliking it for the sake of it being “anti science” because there is a science of magic to study then, No?

It’s not that it’s irrational, it’s that it is wrong. The people who make sacrifices to gain power are immoral, and I think that we will find that very power ends up betraying them later on. It’s a thematic or moral objection, not a rational or logical one.

So long as this cycle continues, they hold half of the power without needing a crown or lands. No magic so they retain that power and all the knowledge. Idk. They don’t seem to want to improve things, quite the opposite.

The thing about the Maesters Masterplan is that even if the conspirators tell themselves that they're trying to save humanity from the dangers of magic, maintaining their own power and influence in Westerosi society is a crucial element, perhaps in truth the primary element. Knowledge is power, and the maesters hoard that power like a miser. Magic users have power that can counter their influence, so the maesters do everything they can to delegitimize magic.
Now, multiply that attitude a hundredfold: That's how they feel about dragons. I don't think the maesters could have caused the extinction of the Targaryen dragons without the Dance of the Dragons, or they would have already done so. It took civil war between two branches of dragonriders to give them the opening.
But... who's to say that they didn't manage to bring about the Dance of the Dragons? Remember, it was the Citadel through Vaegon who suggested choosing Jaehaerys's successor through a Great Council, rather than creating firm rules of succession. By doing that, it was virtually guaranteed that there would be competing claimants sooner or later.
And as it happened, it was pretty soon, wasn't it? Hmm, I'm assuming that Aemma was attended by a maester during all her pregnancies and childbirths. And she had all those miscarriages, didn't she? Then she died in childbirth, with her only son shortly afterward. That is very... interesting.
People have pointed out that the maternal mortality rate among highborn women in Westeros is extremely high, even for a medieval culture. And by tradition, maesters attend noblewoman and royalty in childbirth, rather than midwives. Ponder, ponder, ponder. Just sayin'.

All the history and stories are lost, and bran is more capable than the remnants of the maesters to maintain and propagate it. The sacking of Baghdad with the mongols is exactly how Euron would do it. It was said the river ran black with ink because the books were dumped in the river.
