Salinas de Rio Maior

Salinas de Rio Maior is a historic salt production site that has been in operation for centuries (since 1177). Situated in the town of Rio Maior, in the district of Santarém, it is one of the oldest and largest salt pans in the country. The history of salt production in Rio Maior dates back to the Roman period, but it was during the Moorish occupation of the Iberian Peninsula that the salt industry flourished. The Moors developed sophisticated techniques for salt extraction, including the construction of ponds and channels to facilitate the evaporation of seawater. In the 12th century, after the Christian Reconquista, the salt pans of Rio Maior came under the control of the Portuguese crown. The salt produced here became an important source of revenue for the monarchy, as it was a valuable commodity used for preserving food, seasoning, and as a trade item.
In recent years, the Salinas de Rio Maior has embraced sustainable practices, focusing on environmental conservation and promoting ecotourism. Efforts have been made to protect the local biodiversity, including the creation of a nature reserve within the salt pans. The Salinas de Rio Maior stands as a testament to the rich history and cultural significance of salt production in Portugal.
