Mad incredible props to Perrodo for going and apologising. Racing accidents happen, but man, it takes a big person to go and risk themselves and swallow their pride like that. Such an incredible man, and as said in the commentary, what a role model for everyone.
I've sometimes wondered how I would handle that. None of us are perfect, so I think it's more meaningful to measure ourselves by how we handle our mistakes, and that was pretty cool. I have to agree, definitely much respect to Perrodo, because the world we live in today, needs more people of honor like him. Unfortunately, it’s filled with too many people who are inconsiderate, self-centered, and narrow minded, like the blonde cheering in the Ferrari garage.
It's sad not to see the checkered flag being waved from on the track! That's always the most emotional part of every Le Mans for me. I guess that last-second attempted pass last year put an end to it?
I get that it's tradition to have the flag man on the track at the end. But at the same time, it's still an active race track. Nobody is going to like it if the guy waving the flag gets turned into a 50meter long smear on the road because people are racing to the finish line.
@@charliegiammarco5178 I absolutely 100% agree with you. What a horror that would be to cap off the most amazing day in racing! There's no room in racing for death-defying stunts, and no excuse for someone to be put at risk. I wasn't arguing to bring it back. I think it's a good decision to end that tradition, sad as it feels to me. I do miss the rush of emotion that it brought. Not the thrill of him being dangerously out among the cars, but the unity - the drivers and the flagman, representing the race officials, together, congratulating and honoring each other in front of the fans for their amazing accomplishment. It's the togetherness, the bonding, I guess. It has always made me tear up to see the flagman out among them. But my heart lurched to see the guy nearly get taken out in 2021. (Was it Ferdi Hapsburg driving? I know he was blind to the flagman, so no fault, but quick reactions on both parts to avoid disaster.) It's like the winners spraying the champagne - that's their moment. For me it has always been that iconic flagman. I'll miss the ritual, but I'll try to remember how much nicer it is to have a competitive race that everyone can walk away from (as the norm) instead of the gruesome deaths we saw so often in the 70s (especially in F1). I prefer competitive racing to dead heroes.
@@Dog_Botherer Yes! Gawd knows I've thought that too in past years, but I took it for granted that they had a safe way they were doing it. I wish it could be done safely, but the best of the best were involved in that incident (I have mad respect for those involved), and they had a race to win. It clearly was not safe, and cannot be made to be safe. (Sorry, this topic makes me emotional, and I get verbose.) Let this one evolve into something else that will have as much meaning to our grandchildren, many of whom have never seen a race with a fatality. (Now that's a fitting tribute! I must have seen a dozen die by the time I was 12.) It's Le Mans - Finish line celebrations will always be a part of it, and they will evolve. Something else just occurred to me - The flag marshals all waving every flag to the drivers on their cool-down lap is also a very emotional sight for me, and it shows the same mutual respect, unity, and gratitude between drivers and officials. As the drivers are no longer racing, they are free to wave back and show the two-way respect and gratitude that we know exist. The end of Le Mans is just huge, and it would be emotional without any of these ceremonies, but it's so much better that we can witness these moments - with safety for all!

Back when that tradition started cars were a lot slower and the winning margins were sometimes 10 laps 20-30 laps so you didn't have much worry about 30 cars coming across the line at once.
