Standing in the shadow of the grandiose Richardsonian Romanesque style Thompson House, it is impossible to feel anything short of awe. This exquisite structure, designed in the 19th Century by Cobb & Frost for attorney John Howland Thompson, evokes a time of true craftsmanship and attention to detail that is unparalleled in today's market.
Lovingly and painstakingly restored, this nationally registered Historic Landmark is one of the most iconic homes in Chicago's highly sought after Gold Coast. Its enviable location provides gorgeous views of Washington square, making it just steps away from Lake Michigan and a short walk to the heart of Chicago and The Magnificent Mile.
Inside this timeless home you will be met with all the glamour of old world craftsmanship and the efficiency of 21st Century technology: beautiful custom mill work, marble floors, stained glass windows, rich wood paneling, and Santos Mahogany hardwood floors are complemented by an all new Control 4 system, integrated audio and speaker systems, HVAC smart control, and complete smart home capabilities.
The magnificent entryway welcomes you to The Parlor - a palatial room paneled in mahogany, adorned with hand carved capital columns, set with Turkish Botticino marble flooring, and crowned by an oversized hand carved marble fireplace. Proceed through the Great Room which features a crystal chandelier, Laventa diamonds, silk wall coverings, and a hand carved wood and marble fireplace. Next, experience the state-of-the-art Kitchen, outfitted with high-end appliances and and custom cabinetry hewn from Honduras Mahogany. Finally, step into the Breakfast Room and Formal Dining room: both dining options offering a handsome setting for meals overlooking the lush garden courtyard.
Take the elevator or ascend the curved wood mahogany staircase adorned with a custom stained glass dome and arrive at the second level library, with its impressive detailed arch, luxurious master suite, and stately office. The third level features three sprawling bedrooms and a well appointed lounge room, providing a quiet and private getaway for family or guests. Entreat to the lower level for your source of entertainment or relaxation as it is fitted with a commercial sized bar and luxurious spa. The tranquility of the spa is enhanced with such features as a rain shower, sauna, steam room, and a Jacuzzi featuring an artisanal waterfall cascading over a delicate Italian mosaic wall.
Experience true gentility and sophistication and own a piece of Chicago history with a property that was built to enchant for centuries.
I walk past this house often and have always wanted to see inside of it. It’s absolutely gorgeous and in a perfect location.
Same.
Kept the beauty and integrity by not painting the wood. Just gorgeous.
The craftsmanship in these old Chicago homes is spectacular.
63 Impala rag Dude Actually this home was gutted and remodeled, everything you see on the interior is new, but done with top level craftsmanship.
@@ReelTourVideo well they sure did keep a classic feel to it. It reminds me of my grandmother's house growing up in Chicago. I'm very impressed with the craftsmanship.
Yeah it's crazy actually, took years to complete.
@@ReelTourVideo its absolutely amazing and beautiful. Great job.
I feel better about living in Chicago after reading this 🥺💓
I’ve never seen a house like this before, Absolutely beautiful
I've always wondered about that mansion when I'm on Michigan shopping. After all these years I finally see the inside. THANKS.
This is one of those houses with “good bones.”
For once, utter perfection worth every cent. Should be a world treasure.
It's exquisite!! I just can't imagine how people would feel comfortable living in such a huge home. I would need to have a lot of people with me all the time. I live in 600 sq ft and that's just right! I like being alone too.
Moving Forward I could live in that huge amount of space, I just wouldn’t want to clean it!
Diane E. 🤣🤣🤣
PRIME Location. worth every penny. One of the nicest homes in Illinois. I've seen the outside many times. Thanks for sharing the inside.
1M a year tax......
@@markperry2827 OMG. That's crazy.
Beautiful home. Wrong City! Chicago is a dump. 20 million dollars I would not live on a small corner lot like that
Stunning. I'm so glad that the beautiful workmanship and character of this home has been kept. Just beautiful 💖
Just outstanding, you don't see a house like this but every blue moon.
Absolutely by far the most beautiful, exquisite, and flawless home ever created in history. There are many jealous fools that gave this video a thumbs down.
To you it is. I find it hideous. It looks dazzling and expensive but not beautiful, to me.
The architectural details are stunning! The grand fireplace in marble and carved wood? Outstanding beauty. Wow! What a gorgeous piece of art in the middle of busy downtown Chicago!
Fabulous! I don't like too much dark wood ... however this tastefully well balanced! Kudos to the interior designer/architects!
That house a beautiful work of art, amazing.
The craftsmanship is incredible! Beautiful!!
Well, this house lives it's own life. You're just a guest here, it doesn't matter if you own it or paid it a visit. It cannot be someones home, it lives for itself.
I was thinking this, too.
Anton Raspaev it did. Until this modern gut renovators took it over and gutted the interior to remake ‘traditional’ with inferior materials at obscene expense.
The interior is NOT original to the home.
It's a beauty! I’m glad this home was KEPT historical on the interior. I do love how it’s seated in Chicago’s Affluent Gold Coast (despite the towering scraper next to it) It’s a historical time capsule. A lovely, iconic Richardsonian Romanesque mansion. Heated floors, an elevator, marble floors, carved fireplaces, art glass windows, custom stained-glass dome, etc.. I LOVE the dark wood! ..I’m tired of pasty, white plaster-board and faux-marble in many so-called prominent estates we see these days. Glad they kept that away from this gem. Dark wood is rich, old money. If a seller is giving me Chateau; that's what I want to see inside. If a seller is giving me Southern Gothic Charm on the exterior of a property, but as soon as I walk in, I no longer see a historical gem from 1845, but rather, a 2010 Manhattan New York Penthouse with a Kim Kardashian spread above the sink .. guess what? -> I’m not buying. Certainly glad we aren’t seeing that here. This is a beautiful classic piece that still stands the test of time in charm and value.
theNineCorners it wasn’t kept historical-you’re very much mistaken. It was gutted. That’s all new, Faux-old looking ‘traditional’. ALL the original interior is gone. Trust me...I work in preservation and there’s not a scrap of interior left of the original house. It’s a damn travesty.
Dark wood and white looks like what a keyboard warrior thinks is sophisticated.
Who else saw the staircase in the thumbnail and thought "Titanic"?
you would need a team of people just to keep the house clean
If you can afford this house you can afford a competent cleaning staff.
...but you don’t need to hire anybody to cut the grass.
most of the rooms aren't used regularly
Omg I pass by this house all the time to eat downtown
Absolutely stunning home! Love all the dark wood and stained glass.
Constance Krischan alas, all new.
I really appreciate the craftsmanship that went into building this house. It’s undoubtedly very beautiful and luxurious, but it’s dark and has an eeriness to it. It lacks a warmth to it despite all that woodwork.
This is purely the class of Chicago. Love it!!
That house looks like it's made of chocolate.
Gorgeous woodwork! Beautiful home! From a time when put they soul into their work!
Believe it or not, but this place was gutted and rebuilt but by highly trained craftsmen. Took years to do but looks very period and they definitely put their soul into the work.
This is stunning. I’m not normally into this kinda extravagance but have to admit.
I love the stargates those decorative round arches. I am redoing a small place and that
Gives me an idea for the entry between the dining and livingroom. That would have to be made smaller. Ceiling is only 8'. I am good at sculpting and thinking about cement accents. That would be beautiful. I am making a large Anubis to go by it.
The wooden fireplace was nice too.
Love the woodwork. Just.... wow
This house in person 👌🏿
I guess when you this rich you just sit around. Plenty of seating throughout the home.
You both are right! I am son of a billionaire and work as an interior designer i love chairs an use them all the time.
@@reutercharles7516 could i have some money pretty please
Lol. He didn't say he is giving it away. Plis, it is his parents money. He said he is the son. You made me lol
Good for entertaining.
Beautiful Home 🏡
Beautiful house
Spectacular!
simply beautiful!
pretty amazing to wake up there every morning
Splendid!
Agreed
Deann VP Sad. Gutted and remade interior in ‘traditional’ style with modern (read: much inferior) techniques and material. Sad.
Spend $20M yet live by the street with no privacy 😂
That's what I was thinking as well.
Unbothered
I would LOVE this. A mansion in the heart of the city.
super expensive for chicago. unremarkable for new york.
Some people enjoy people watching or just seeing cars and activity around them
This home is BEAUTIFUL. If I could I would buy it in a 💓 beat .
My name is Anne Lashaye I bought this house and I'm ready to move in immediately. I'm in Worth,Illinois 60482 on a 111th St. Always come to worth restaurant in the morning time. I am excited to move in this house. Thank You!
God, what a piece of heaven this is. It is perfect in every way, but ditch the mass produced furniture (most, but not all of it), but incorporate Italian and French pieces of antiquity. The furniture of antiquity, rightly, has a place in a home as luxurious as this. Thank you for posting.
It looks solidly built - NO PLASTERBOARD !
The only thing I didn’t like about this amazing property was that hideous glass accent piece in the bathroom by the tub. I was awe struck watching this video and I’m very happy that this place was so well maintained! Bravo!
Buying it once I win Powerball
Stunning home but however the exquisite woodwork is too dark for me!
Yeah i agree, with brighter colors the home would be even more breathtaking
Woooooow so beautiful
Beautiful! It looks like a American Horror Story property lol
Breathtakingly beautiful ....?i prefer modern or contemporary but I surely would live here for free lol
Where do the guests park?
Every room feels like midnight
Expertly done video. You are buying LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. Having said that, this historic house is not so much for raising a family, but for someone who needs to ENTERTAIN important people and IMPRESS clients! This is also suitable as a consulate or embassy.
Or high end hotel
So stunning! Wow
Beautiful.let me stay there for a year!🥰
@@elisemuhammad3624 how about 2
Is the Potash Grocery store still across the street in One East Delaware? They didn’t even mention the insane level of convenience of having a grocery store across the street.
Great home chicago here I come!!!
Just one question. What’s the beautiful music? Sanctus Dominus by Aeoliah?
Wow! Imagine the property taxes in that.
Crazy beautiful though
Imm have to walk pass there this week. Downtown does this thing where they do tall buildings, buildings, neighborhood apartments, maybe another, then back to tall skyscrapers, eyes && head get good excercises.
$20 MILLION with no garage, no swimming pool, backyard/green space, no gym, and no basketball/tennis court, and shootings 20 minutes from the location...sure...it's a fabulous buy. Whomever buys this is blessed.
Love it and the location!
It's beautiful. Where's the antiques?
Amen thank you Lord
Beautiful! 20 million beautiful? Absolutely not!
@Hugh Hefner's Bastard Child This one would probably go for $80 million in San Francisco (assuming it's up to earthquake code, of course.).
Sensational!
Perfect for me. I 💛 it!
WOW! seen this place 1000 times probably. But it's worth 15 mill tops!
Marvellous.
I would change everything.
It looks like a place old people chill. 🤷🏾♂️
😂
Ikr xd
WOW !! beautiful "castle" for only $ 20,000,000
I couldn't live with all that dark wood,
Incredible
Like living in a hotel by yourself.
Absolutely beyond words. However anybody out there have an idea on yearly property taxes. Gotta be unbelievably expensive.
Ours is 12 grand a year and it's a 750k home..soooooo lol yeah its alot. I live only minutes from this house
Thanks for the info. Have a nice evening.
@@bobvogel2412 you're welcome. Its public info ,google cook county if you're really interested. Idk if it's like that everywhere but in chicago you can see what ur neighbors pay and if they even owe
Antonio V wow thats an expensive property you own
@@10ksubsnovids thanks. It's just typical chicago .nothing decent under 450k
All of that loveliness..... plus street noise of living in River North.... much better ways to spend twenty million.....
anyone know the title of the song?
I’m sorry, I cannot recall which track this is.
@@ReelTourVideo no worries, how about an artist?
Wow! Amazing!
This saddens me, as a historical preservationist. Nothing was left of the original interior....all massively updated to ‘look’ traditional and old, but nothing remains of the actual interior. You can see that in a hot second. The exterior is still “grand”.l..in a faux modem way. But I wouldn’t look st this home for purchase, not for any money. Give me true vintage....or you can have it. Old growth wood, hands-on craftsmanship, 130 years of history written on every surface -- this *cannot be replicated*. They’ve gutted this gorgeous building of its character. Tragic, and something of a crime.
I’ll take it!
Over a year later and this white elephant is still for sale. At a fraction of the listing price (USD19,500,00 vs USD5,950,000) the house at 1919 N Dayton, Chicago, is by far a better choice.
my powerball pick
Wait, I passed by this house last week
My Sunbelt city has nothing to match the elegance of some of Chicago's older homes. It's a shame. But elegance like this comes at a premium, so even the rich in my area have to settle for gaudy or, at the very least, tasteless.
It’s beautiful 😍. But it doesn’t really seem like a House for a real Family. It’s looks more like a Museum.
fantastico
$20M to live in crook county?! No fkn thank you!!! Imagine the property taxes on that thing. Chicago is not worth anything about $5M IMO.
I knew it 🥰 It’s heated sidewalks gave it away!
music?
I would like to know also
what's the composer name / song?
Wonder why the old owners Left Paradise
Or death
Only two things certain in life. Death, and Taxes. Lol
Probably tired of the gunshots in the neighborhood. It's Chicago that's a daily problem.
Can you take a check?
hmm I hope they stick to the house original setting. back in those days the formal dining table is never to be placed right in the same room with the kitchen. and of course the kitchen wouldnt be placed in the first floor right after main entrance. it will be weird for the guest to suddenly roaming into the kitchen as the kitchen is not for the guest to see
Motivational
Where is the SUPER like button!?
Vampire House !!!
The house is gorgeous but it’s like a rich person version of the house from Up. Surrounded by buildings and businesses and like, if I was this rich, and I had a property this stunning, I would want to have some beautiful land for it, some privacy, not be right on the street surrounded by high rises ....
It's kinda overrated. For that money (actually much less) could also have a duplex penthouse 80 stories up with unobstructed views for 100's of miles in all directions.
Looks like a commercial property turned residential. Why would anyone want a 20 million dollar home on a busy street with no privacy?
WOW
Can you imagine having to clean that place and dusting.
When you live in a place like that, you are not the one cleaning haha. But would be so tough for sure!
@@ReelTourVideo I couldn’t help but think that way could you imagine how big the crew would be to have to clean and dust that place how much money that will cost you. It’s coming from a mind of a poor person LOL
@@teresamance8381 its all relative to income really, when spending millions on a home, a cleaning crew is pocket change.
@@ReelTourVideo that’s the only way I could step in that place and that is to clean it. I think if I lived there I would wear those shoes that are made to look like dusters for the floors. Any whooo, it’s a beautiful place and lived in Chicago for many years in the city and would wake up on my day off with coffee in the morning looking at the architecture of the buildings and flowers, beautiful city. Was the place sold for 20 mil?
@@teresamance8381 Honestly could not tell you if it sold, Just do the media and then move onto the next lol.
..late to the offer... very unique
What is the property tax? At least 50k a year
Try 250k a year.
