- For a young Canadian general, Romeo Dallaire's assignment as commander of the U.N. peacekeeping force in Rwanda in 1994 was a heady opportunity.
Animated by humanitarian ideals and a belief in the international system, he went forth with energy, enthusiasm, and expectations of success. Soon his hopeful confidence was shattered. The brutality, cynicism, corruption and disinterest he saw doomed the mission and left him with regret and suicidal despair. This is his story.
Originally aired on January 24, 2005.
Great interview, enhanced by the fact that Dallaire was allowed to talk and not interrupted constantly.
He’s a smart guy, I enjoyed reading his book although a bit arcane for someone like me not used to all the terminology.
Romeo Dallaire is a true Hero. A flesh and bone one.
Romeo Dallaire is a hero
It is unfortunate that this video has so little views.
I drove him several times from Entebbe to Kabale for meetings ...UNAMIR 1994.
Must have been an experiance to say the least. Have you read his book? Did/Do you live in Rwanda? Sorry for questions dont mean to be instrusive just curious about your experiance.
one of the most thrilling, informative and inspiring books I've read. Even thinking about going to Africa after reading it.
Thank you Sir. For your humanity, your bravery, your spirit.
As a Canadian, General Dallerie will always be a hero in my mind. In this operation he was completely held out to dry by Bill Clinton and the U.N.
At the time I was serving a UN mission while in the US Army, and believe me when I say we all wanted to kick the UN off the planet. We could have jumped in there and put an end to the genocide within a day.
@@RW4X4X3006 why did the orders delay? It's thoughtless.
@@IamGodSon Clinton didn't have the balls to step up.
@@RW4X4X3006 the clintons and Obama's have destroyed america. May God restored your beautiful country. But Rwanda and Africa was the worse because of the genocide.
@@IamGodSon The original mission of the UN, as created during WW2, was to prevent genocide and wars between nations. For the past 50 years, it's been a bloated, run amok government bureaucracy, with a nefarious self serving agenda - financed by the American taxpayers .
i looked up the interviewer george liston seay and it turns out he passed away somewhat recently. i'm amazed that people can converse in such eloquent and insightful ways. daillaire kind of lit up to it too. what a cool dude, rest in peace
Currently reading his book.
What is the name of the book?
Allan Mwembe "Shake hands with the devil"
love this man...want to be like him when...i grow up
@Jay North Thank you sir!!
a true hero, the world needs more men like you
Excellent interview guys, I love this kind of content, please keep it up!
Excellent interview. Well done to the producers.
I watched it today because I am currently doing a lot of research about Rwanda after I read the news on Thursday 27/9/2024 regarding the Marburg outbreak in Kigali. I watched "Shooting Dogs" and "Hotel Rwanda" yesterday.

Teasing out the nuances of the response to Yugo vs Rwanda is brilliant.
Romero dallerie a true angel.
Great General. Humanity failed because it was Africa. They even failed to recognize it as a genocide even though it was one. Rwanda was abandoned because they saw it as tribal conflict but spent billions of dollars in Yugoslavia. This is racism.
One of the most haunting page turning books i have ever read. Absolutely, shockingly detailed. I read the entire book in 3 days when not at work. I coulndt put it down. All the UN ministers invovled should have been thrown in jail. And the shocking behaivour of the belgian and french leadership, not there soldiers there on the ground, should have led to arrests and overhauls of leadership.
Its anstonishing how Mr. Kagame and the countries citizens have been able to right Rwanda since genocide took place.
Much respect to general
It's a book everyone should read. It's difficult but worth it. An incredible man, a brave man who did all he could to prevent genocide. Best wishes from Limerick Eire.
I wanna hug Romeo.
“Evil always knows it’s own mind.” Well said George.
Great man, Mr. General Romeo Dallaire is my authority.
Standing up for what is truely right is rare, even rarer when it really counts, - like you could be personally impacted, and even die. Jesus Christ said: No greater love has a man than to lay down his life for his friend. Rhetorec can sound so grand, (UN speak) the realities are some what different.
Damn.. just damn
Bravery
This book is an important and valuable resource for studying the genocide but good lord there’s so much that should’ve been edited out. The book is about 100 pages longer than it reasonably should be.
What's that stuff that you'd consider to be extra?
Mulroney incompetence and slack in process
The truth by any means
