The correct way is to start with him driving up to the house, talking about how he got a new truck, show him unload all his tools, talk about the new saw he got, show him walk in, talk about the house, then get to the un-even wall joint and talk about how other people do it and several wrong ways to do, simulate those before doing it in a way that works.
i've transitioned from being a skater who loved your videos of board reviews to now a home owner once again relying on you for my DIY projects, oh the world is so funny
Random video for me to make this comment. But I remodeled my bathroom last summer and I had so much anxiety about drywall that I watched your videos every day. The bathroom turned out great. Every piece of painted drywall is smooth and perfect.
Very much appreciated. I love the how you don't stretch your vids out. Most people make what should take 2 or 3 minutes and stretch it into a 20 minute vid with only 30 seconds of info. Well done and ty.
I’m remodeling my kitchen (turned into a HOUSE remodel thanks to my wife ;) ... been watching your videos and I can honestly say, you have helped me a lot! Thanks!
I have heard that remodeling a house, whether you do work yourself or have it contracted, is an extreme test of the strength of a marriage. Locally, a McDonalds restaurant went through a remodel that, for some reason, seemed to take take well over a year. I asked young people working if they liked that. Of course, they didn't. I suggested that someday when they are married and considering remodeling a house, that this is a good lesson. Furthermore, I did a tiny, tiny piece of work in her laundry room where I cut through drywall to install a wall cabinet to protrude into a void that had the water heater. So the cabinet was flush mount. I had closed the laundry room door thinking that would take care of the drywall dust. Wrong. A very light film of white dust got on most everything through much of the house. The lady was NOT happy. And that was just a tiny job.
@@trainliker100 we’ve been together through thick and thin for over 37 years. She’s a trooper for sure. She knew going into this it could get bumpy. The biggest problem with doing a house remodel is making sure it’s still livable while doing it. The only thing she (and I) have had to sacrifice is the dishwasher as it’s being relocated once the new cabinets are in.
Thanks to your videos, I'm now the best one at drywall at work. I work as a Facilities Coordinator, so I do all sorts of random stuff. But drywalling has become my most enjoyable aspect of my job thanks to all your tips and explanations!
Finding your channel has made my drywalling experience soooo much better than it used to be! A huge thank you to you for taking the time to make these videos!!!
Me too. I'm certainly not as fast. And don't try to use anything like stilts and don't have a top notch vacuum sander. But I'm now nearly finished with my roughly 1000 sq. ft. garage. Just finished a window return using tear off strips and it came out perfect. I think the key points that helped were: Screws not nails (and I got a Makita drywall screw gun - well worth it), Pre-fill joints with quick set compound. Use shellac based primer on any torn paper. For universal compound in the big bucket, add a little water and stir. For taping, add more water to the compound to make sure it is thin enough so the tape will get wet enough. Feather edges - avoid sanding. Tools I purchased were the Makita drill, a cheap $30 vacuum sanding attachment with sanding screens that you connect to a shop vac, drywall sanding sponge, several drywall knives of various widths, a stainless drywall pan with friction grip, a hawk, and a drywall T square. Very low capital expenditure and more than adequate for a homeowner a small more or less one time job.

Dude, I am in hangman the drywall is my nemesis. I always manage to pull it off, but it is just a beast for me to get done. I just had to remove a full sheet of drywall out of a finished and painted wall and was dreading muddying the factory edges to the finished wall. Now, thanks to your super simple tutorial, I realize it’s a relatively simple job. Keep up the good work and keep those videos coming.
Hey, just wanted to say thank you for all the great content. You have saved me a ton of money by giving me the skills to finish a few rooms and sell my house for a bunch and add a room to the new house.
@Vancouver Carpenter. Thanks Ben for the quick tip on how to tape uneven drywall joints. So it's not as scary as it first looks. Thanks. Hope you and your family stay safe and well.
I've watched several of your videos, excellent videos. I had 9 pipe ruptures after the Texas Freeze Out last month but fortunately the drywall damage is minimal. Your videos have helped me BIGGLY !!! Thanks !!!
I recently had a roof leak causing my drywall to blister so I cut the drywall out about 2ft square piece. I got a patch piece and cut the patch out and when I installed it I had this issue. Luckily I had so quick set mix and prefilled and sanded it smooth before taping. I’m not a drywall guy was just trying to problem solve. Glad I found your video to ease my doubts a bit 😂

I was a bit of a dummy and created one of these joints unnecessarily, I also put some mesh into the prefilled area which I *hope* makes the channel a little more resilient to cracking.
I seriously thought my shower drywall was "damaged" at the edge because of the taper - like it hadn't been stored flat & bowed in the middle. Now I feel like a big goon. Thanks for this...😄
Only cause I've been watching your old videos for the past months on and off. Thanks man you've been every helpful took me a few hours of practice but was able to accelerate the learning curve thanks your pointers. Now I'm waiting for a job I can skateboard in and try skating and taping or whatever Done it before with painting a warehouse worked like a hot damn.
Something I’ve done on butt joint is take a wood rasp and cut/grind a taper on the edge. Then I fill/paper the taper like they were both factory made. Finishes out flatter. But yes it was/is some work to make a taper but I liked the result.
Is it wrong to prefill joints (before tape) too much that the groove is gone? My butt joints were not perfectly level so I did this this trick and now the groove is perfectly flat. Does the center crease of the tape NEED a slight channel to sink into?
Pre-fill to close the voids . Pre-fill to level extreme edges . There is no single answer to your question . When adding seam tape , the trick is burying it deep enough and expanding the edges far enough to hide the connection . Too much mud usually leads to over sanding and bad looking repairs .
