- Excerpt from Present Grandeur: The Road and the Miles; a documentary on the development of Dundee, which at the time was the fastest growing city in Scotland. Includes interview with Lord Provost, Maurice McManus.
Interesting to hear the patronising attitude taken towards Dundee by the media even then. Unfortunately it persists and does nothing for the confidence of Dundee people and the standing of the city as a whole. This might explain the way Dundonians defensively tend to put the place down themselves (before anyone else does) and feel squirmish when anything positive is said about it. As to the 'regeneration', much of it was blatant philistine vandalism perpetrated by a gang of corrupt councillors and their pals out to make a fast buck. They have never been forgiven for ripping the heart out of the old mediaeval city centre, and rightly so.
Such diversity!
Such a shame the city has been run into the ground
