  • King Charles has delivered his first Labour King's Speech and has revealed the party's agenda for the next 12 months.
    The address - the first Speech from the Throne under a Labour government since 2009 - contains a whopping 35 Bills and draft Bills.
    There has been a particular emphasis on improving transport, driving growth, creating jobs and accelerating the building of houses and infrastructure.
    However, some have criticised the lack of bills related to health and the NHS.

    This analysis also seems 'quite wishy washy' to me. James has his strengths and weaknesses. He was certainly very 'on it' when it came to brexit, but he's not totally 'on it' when it comes to all issues. Natasha Clark makes me nervous. There was a time when Keunnsberg was a young careerist on the rise...and I feat that she may end up like Keunnsberg over time. She seems to morph commercially to whoever she's talking with on LBC...and she cut her teeth working for the Sun. The takeaway from this for me is 'does the UK really need a king?'

    Did you know only 13% of the voting public saw tax as the top priority. Yet the media covered it more than all other topics, this stagnant economy will be the fault of the media with it's obsession with not taxing the wealthy or assets. The NHS was 50% of voters top priority and was barely talked about, because you would have to objectively state that labour the last time in government were not just better on the NHS they were miles ahead. And in a "unbiased" media landscape rather than a truthful one, this is what you end up with.
    Edit : The percentage for voter priorities is from a Yougov top issues poll and the media bias study is from Loughborough University. The person claiming they found no reference to it in the comments, obviously didn't look in the first place.

    Find it worrying that they want to build 1.5 million dwellings in 5 years (not a chance they will). But doesn’t this go against wanting to be net zero and do better for our environment? Where does it end, how many fields will be lost for all of these dwellings. Not to mention the added strain for more energy without the answers for that too also. Its all a great thought, but in reality I really don’t think the bigger picture is being seen by the government

    • @DatDirtyDog
      @DatDirtyDog Місяць тому +1

      Only about 8 percent of the UK is developed for citys, towns, villages, roads and motorways. I think we can use a couple more percent. The people that buy the new houses will be people currently living with there parents. They still use up local resources like doctors and power because they already exist. The fact they have the chance to own theire own home makes them happy and raises more money for the council via extra council tax income which can be used to improve the local services without adding extra strain.

The rebuilding of the social state with functioning infrstructure is left to crossed fingers and a prayer for growth, instead of a radical 21st century industrial policy, delivering a reevaluation of modern work, the role of increasing tech and changes in the production of value. Charging VAT on private school fees is problematic. Firstly a number are special needs schools will be caught unless exceptions are made and so far Labour is not willing to make exceptions. Second parents who are on the edge of affordability will take pupils out of private schools and back into the state system; losing VAT on one end and costing more on the other. Third the extra 6,000 teachers Labour plans to recruit using the VAT charged works out one extra day of teacher per week per school; the benefit will hardly touch the sides. Fourth when this has been looked at in the past by Labour there was a human rights law problem in charging VAT on school fees and so it was shelved. We can expect this to be resurrected by the schools and It will be interesting to see how that is navigated. Fifth - not sure if the EU will be happy with this given EU VAT law and Labour's desire to cosy up to the EU. This is not a straightforward one for Labour to implement and was always red meat to the left. I suspect there may be yet another U turn from Sir Keir who lets face it flip flops on everything.
