Competition has always played a big role in hip hop. Battle rhymes, diss songs, trying to outshine someone on his own song, it’s all in the spirit of competition.
But in the mid-90s, the competition in New York was especially heavy. Let’s think about the rappers were coming up at that time - you had Nas and Big both releasing landmark debuts in ’94, Mobb Deep damn bringing all of Queensbridge wherever they went, Raekwon with The Purple Tape and the rest of Wu-Tang by his side. Most of the rappers on our greatest of all time list came on the ’90s East Coast.
The Only Built 4 Cuban Linx album contained a skit called "Biters" in which Raekwon and Ghostface discuss how much they hate rappers that copy styles, slang & lyrics.
The Notorious B.I.G.’s album cover for “Ready to Die” was interpreted as biting Nas' “Illmatic,” cover, and the Chef and Ghostface clown Biggie without dropping his name - the point was made, and Big later kicked in the door.
Of interesting note is that Method Man was featured on Big’s The What and his own crew is spitting fire off the same album.
It seemed as though a new rapper was making their claim for the throne every other day. So when it came time for Nas to drop his highly anticipated sophomore record, on the song "The Message" he made sure to let everyone know who was the rightful king of New York.
It has been widely perceived as singling out B.I.G., who had been declared “king of New York” in an infamous 1995 profile in The Source.
Nas, whose Illmatic pioneered the NYC street rap that Biggie perfected for pop radio with hits like “Juicy”, tries to reassert his royal status on his more commercial sophomore album.
Nas has confirmed that the song actually disses The Notorious B.I.G. with the lines, “There’s one life, one love, so there can only be one King.” This lyric challenged Notorious B.I.G.’s title of King of New York at that the time of its release. He responded on the track “Kick in the Door” from his 1997 album Life After D3ath.
From Biggie’s second and final official album, Life After D3ath, “Kick in the Door” is a diss track aimed at everybody, nobody, haters, other rappers (including Nas, Jeru the Damaja, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah), and most importantly, YOU. He dissed more than a dozen rappers on the entire album & showed Nas & the Wu-Tang clan that he's the superior rapper & the rightful King Of New York.

I look at it like this, when Nas so called “fell off,” it was primarily due to Biggie & Pac getting assassinated. Hip Hop was in SHOCK!!! If Big & Pac was still Alive, Nas would’ve had the Inspiration to be on his A Game. The death of Big & Pac changed a lot of Dynamics.. Nas even said, “It used to be fun, making records to see your response, but, now competition is none, now that you’re gone…” It F_cked Nas & a lot of peoples heads up, because it was giant paradigm shift… Trust me I know, I’m an Artist from Brooklyn NY, who was part of the Hip Hop scene at that time (look up Dead Poets Society “Klocuz,” I’m the last dude). I know people here keep saying Nas not getting on the gimme the loot remix was a huge missed opportunity but for me…nas not being the second featured artist on Ready to Die is the biggest missed opportunity. I honestly feel that the problem wasn't that big "copied" other rappers, the problem was that he did it better or at least more successful, I don't think it's biting tho I do think big absorbed and was like "ey that's cool I put that in my repertoire" since he basically freestyles all his material anyway...but if he would copy and it would be a weak rip off rappers wouldn't even sweat it, they be like "yeah some copycat half ass trying to do what I do, whatever" but that's not what happened...I think the way people looked at BIG might be similar to how people today look at Harry mack...just so far ahead of the game it is frustrating for the rest, and i think big L was the same, so effortless it's just made other rappers angry

Big not writing lyrics has been debunked by Lil Cease and Clark Kent. He was writing rhymes, but memorises his lines. He even said it himself, that reading it while recording would confuse him. The time when he started to do away with writing was in the session with Jay-Z on Brooklyn Finest. Also, for Life After Death, Lil Cease mentioned that BIG was writing and structuring LAD while he was admitted in the hospital. If u have been listening to rap for a very long time, you can tell when something was written or not. Eminem don't write verses, but he write lines, and they'd be scattered all over his writing pad. BIG was definitely biting Nas, with album cover and 1 feature on the album.
There was a an album by the Ohio Players (one of their greatest hits albums) that was very similar to Ready To Die. I think that was the actual influence.
Big didn't memorize songs but he did memorize lines.. and he would put those lines together with other lines he remembered and that's how that went.. but a lot of times he would just come up with songs like while he was sitting there talking with you and then go in the booth and spit about what y'all were just talking about.. cuz he was just that ill

This is a great video and breakdown. I’ve been watching some of these interviews and listening to how these guys described the relationships back then and they act they were best friends but when you break it down with some of the info and breakdown of lyrics you can clearly see some of these guys genuinely did not like each other at the time.

I can watch this all day. Thank you for upload. It’s always getting goosebumps listening to some interviews by BIG, or Tupac and others emcees. And studying their lyrics and the wordplay and get to know the story behind it. Back in the day we have some brilliant emcees, with great producers and beat maker. DJ Premier, Havoc of Mobb Deep, The Alchemist, The RZA, J Dilla, Pete Rock and many more. All these people’s are amazing.
