- This is Karene a 41 year old female farmer in the parish of St.Catherine in Jamaica, Karene Has been farming for over 8 years . Karene laments how hard it is as a single mother and how hard she works on her farm to take care of her children, she said there has been many times when she felt like giving up because of drought and many other elements that has put a damper on her farming, however her love for farming and her willingness to do what it takes to provide for her children as a single parent. Karene farms crops such of pine, pop choy, callaloo, corn, bananas, plantains, scallion, thyme, water melons, sweet peppers, tomatoes etc.

TX for showcasing this young lady,,I like what she said,one can walk out to one garden and pick something,cook and eat,I am seeing that with the swiss chard I planted,makes a scrumptious meal with can of sardines mixed with tuna,she is very friendly and easy to talk to,her callalo looks good,outside on my porch I am growing kale,never knew you have to water liberally, this year I am watering and boy its growing,I am thinking of growing more,could never have enough of greens,make a mean smoothie.well got to go,have to water my garden.

First I'm seeing red callalo her farm is looking very good
Red calaloo grow abundantly in Southwestern St.Elizabeth, and she is not doing a good job by the way. She might not know how to farm most of the crops she is farming, so she needs help. The place needs to be organized and prioritize. And, I am not criticizing her. I am hoping she will be able to reach out to people and organizations that can help her to put the farm together, and for her to farm in a way whereby she can make real money. Blessings anyway
Sister Karen. I love to see when we women are not afraid of doing the farming also. I use to plant up my back yard alot also until allergy really started giving me a hard time that I had to visit the ER twice last year, so I had to give it up, I use to plant up my yam, scallions, Calaloo, bell pepper, okra, string beans and more but the pollen is giving me hell, so I had to pack it up. I really miss it because next January, February I don't have any yam to dig. Ms Shanzenzen blessings and Continue to highlight the positive sides of our country and the wonderful farmers in Jamaica. Especially the women.
