"Learning is to a man as the leaves and branches are to a tree, and it can be said that he should simply not be without it." - Takeda Shingen Glad to see you back, the best history series on UA-cam resumes!
Just wanted to let you know I enjoy the work you put into this series. Vefore I found your channel I've been listening to the A History of Japan podcast on Spotify up to the Muromachi period when I began having trouble keeping track of the various factions, terminology and names but your channel helped me piece everything together. I'm already planning on continuing once you enter into the Warring States period and, hopefully, beyond.
Been so long since you're last post, wonderful to see you back here as I'm in the middle of studying the Nanboku-cho period at length since it isn't well known but your content has always been something I look forward to.
Amazing series. Well researched, detailed, and still very enternaining narration with great production. Congratulations! Really, I'm watching the whole series on preparation to my trip to Japan, and I'm really looking forward to see the rest published soon :D
Thank you so much! It’s a constant battle with my work schedule, but I definitely intend to keep the series going. Your support and kind words are very, very much keeping me motivated!
Currently reading The Founding of the Kamakura Shogunate 1180-1185 by Minoru Shinoda. Had to seek it out through our state library system and shipped from a university. Thanks to your channel for bringing me such wonderful content and reviving my love for medieval japan
I did a double take when I saw the announcement! You're one of my favorite youtube channels, and have thoroughly enjoyed your videos as a huge history nerd. I honestly think your videos are some of the best english language online resources for japanese history. Very excited to see future videos to come!
Yooo. He's back. I haven't seen anything new on here since I found this channel until today. I just got done watching it and I have mixed feelings about this period. While I find it fascinating that warrior-rule and decentralization lead to economic and cultural booms, I have to say, I have a bit of secondhand nostalgia for the more elegant and aristocratic parts of the Heian period in particular. I love the subtlety of The Tale of Genji, and the deep emotion of Heian period waka poetry. Not to mention that it was in the Heian period that the warriors really emerged as an actual force. Also, your video on the war in the north is particularly helpful as, not only do I love the history of Tohoku in the Heian Period, but also I'm going to be translating, and making a video on, the story of the Former Nine Years War from the Konjaku Monogatari Shu sometime in the near future and I'll be rewatching your video on it multiple times. Thanks for the good work. Looking forward to more content in the future.
I also have a particular fondness for the late Heian period, so I totally understand your sentiment. Good luck with your translation, that sounds like a very cool project!
I just got back from a con, and what a better way to wrap it up than with the first Japanese History: the Textbook video in nearly a year? Welcome back dude! Looking forward to the start of the sengoku jidai 😎
For anyone interested in the cultural segment of this video, there's a fantastic documentary series from like a decade ago called "Understanding Japan: A Cultural History" that's now free to watch on UA-cam. It's more focused on the cultural aspects of history than the political history this series tends to focus on while still touching on a lot of the same things/historic events, which makes it a great supplement to this show.
I just binged The textbook series in one day thank you so much for this wonderful series, it's bittersweet that this type of quality content takes time to produce but i'm so glad it exists, looking forward to the next video!!!
That 🔥 🔥 theme music gets me bobbin my head, clappin and shoulder shimmying every time. Glad you didn’t cave in to the haters. Keep up the good work man!
お久しぶりAdamさん、新しい動画を作ってくれて嬉しい!I’m really happy you could make a new video the 足利幕府 was interesting and how many problems it had and I think you explained the 応仁の乱 very well. I also like how you explained 地侍.my favorite was the second half the culture and daily ice was fun and heparin about 沖縄 and 北山 中山 南山 was great . 次の動画を楽しみ!
いつもご視聴いただきありがとうございます!Thanks for always being one of the first to watch! I'm glad you liked the 応仁の乱 explanation, I was worried that no matter how I explained it it would be confusing, but it sounds like it worked out alright 😁
This is so great! As important as the political events are, I absolutely cherished the second part dealing with the cultural aspects of the Muromachi period. I wish there was a long video or series of everything culture for each era. Welcome back and thank you very much!
I will definitely try to continue to shine a spotlight on social and cultural stuff going forward! It was a fun part of the video for me to make as well. Glad you enjoyed it!
I was just lamenting this channel’s infrequent updates yesterday as I relistened to all the videos this past week, and now we have a new long one! This is great-thank you!
As always, your videos are in-depth and properly researched unlike other pop-history in youtube. Given that you've included the histories of both of the Chinese Ming Dynasty and the Korean Joseon Dynasty, you'll be tackling the Imijin War eventually, right? Oh boy, that's going to be quite the historical material to be covering since it's basically a hot political mudpit for Korea and Japan especially. It'll be interesting to see how you'll be doing a unbiased view of it.
Was so happy to see this show up, and it was wonderful as always. Thank you for making such a series, which is both definitive factually and extremely enjoyable to watch, with a wonderful calm vibe overall, and so much resplendent art and other visual aids for context. Eagerly awaiting the next, however long it takes.
Again, what a fantastic channel and great content. I have no idea how long it takes you to find all the art relevant to each subject but it adds a ton to the video and helps ease us into what are often pretty complex political history facts. I feel like I've heard so much about the Ashikaga family and was never sure what they did or they were, this period was always very blurry but this video really dispelled that.
I’m super glad to hear you enjoyed the video! Collecting the images is indeed one of the most time-consuming aspects of the editing process (I have sometimes spent entire afternoons in pursuit of a single image 😅) but it makes it feel worthwhile to know you appreciate them!
really enjoy your series- such depth and so well researched, the art choices and graphics are excellent, and your presentation, voice, and obvious relish for Japanese pronunciation make these very enjoyable. Thanks, and keep up the good work!
When finally I saw the notification about your latest video my heart just jumped out of my chest as for 1 year I sometimes saw at your channel and thought when will he continue? But today finally that became true. Your videos are so enjoyable and informative as always they have been.
So glad to have another chapter to watch and digest. It has taken me a few days to have some time to put aside for it, but like all the previous videos it was well worth it. Oh, and I had an amazing time in Tohoku last year 😁
Thank you for this EXCELLENT content. Do you have any recommendation for any sources in English on how the way of warfare developed from the Onin War until the establishment of the Tokugawa Shogunate?
Thank you! I’m afraid I do not, though. As I live in Japan, I do 99% of my history reading in Japanese. (I probably ought to read more English stuff too, though, as I’m sure there are a lot of great books out there.)
I'm so happy you're still making these!! It's been so long I had started thinking you quit UA-cam 😢 just a few days ago I was crying (metaphorically) to my husband about how the cool Japanese history dude hasn't posted the next video for years (a year, fine, it felt longer :c) and holy, you actually came back! I'm really happy man, I was pretty worried you actually died or something. I hope things irl are going well for you and that you can continue finding time to keep posting these ❤ Also why did UA-cam show me the notification four days late??? Messed up, dude
Also make a patrone so you can get paid for the doubtless insane amounts of labor you put into these. Just 'cause it's a labor of love doesn't mean you can't get compensation as well
I’ve been on the fence over whether to make a Patreon for so long… I think it would keep me on track better, but I think it would drive up my stress to put out videos more consistently too 😅 Anyway, I really appreciate the sentiment and the support! Thank you!

Really amps my appreciation for the new anime The Elusive Samurai (also Heike Monotagari)

Holy shit. I once again assumed you died. The greatest history channel on UA-cam is back. Your channel is a hidden gem and is massively underrated.

Glad to have you back! We visited Japan last November and visited many of the sites you reference in your videos. Keep up the good work.
The notification belled. I gasped for air.

@@calumlittle9828 All of the gay 😘
I’m sad you didn’t make this a haiku
@louie97ation A Haiku would be anachronistic for this Muromachi Period video

This series has forged a greater love for Japanese history than I ever thought possible ❤
