Got one of these and love it. Just done 5000 km road trip around Europe…it really can be done! Disagree that small battery version is pointless though - if you’ve got home charging and live in a city it would be absolutely fine

I wish Fiat would bring back the 500 to the states. We need affordable EVs and we need more options for those who primarily just commute to and from work, especially in urban environments. That third door would definitely add to the practicality, and if priced right could make a perfect BEV city runabout. Especially since the CCS charging is now supported. We had the original 500e and I’ve seen a fair few as of late, given how cheap they are used.

Love my ‘Passion’ spec 500. Tiny size means it just fits on our drive and it’s a pleasure to drive, especially in range mode which does bring ours to a complete halt. We’re getting about 160 real world range with quite a bit of motorway driving. 85kw charging is useful for quick top ups away from home.

Apart from the infrastructure that needs to be improved not just here in the UK but in other European countries, what concerns me with electric cars is the life expectancy of the batteries. Is there any info on that? How costly is it to replace them compared to buying a new EV instead? Thank you for yet another informative review.

    • @kevanmccaffrey8513

Battery will last similar to an engine life. And individual cells can be replaced to restore capacity. But require no maintenance like an engine. Most should see 150k with little fatigue. Charge car overnight on your drive way. Off peak cost. Best way. Full power every morning. Or as desired. If you require over 200 miles a day.. leave for a few years.. they will improve.. charging stations will be tedious.. these long range EVs will arrive mid decade.

You’re looking at a battery “life” of 12 years, comparable to a petrol car. Why do I say “life”? Because that represents a loss of about 20%. So, the battery is still usable after that time, you just wouldn’t get the same range. After that, you can replace the battery and keep the old one (or sell it for) domestic solar storage.

    • @ma.re978

Plus, Fiat (as do other BEV manufacturers) gives you a warranty of 100.000 kilometres or 7 (or 8) years with a battery capacity of minimum 70%. Should the battery degrade earlier, you are entitled to a battery refurbishment/replacement.

I am very disappointed in the battery technology as I said the range is no were near the manufacturer quoted and I have watched a video Autogefuel were Thomas the presenter said that if you drive any ev at 60 to 70 mph you will only get half of the max quoted range, which It seems to be with the fiat 500e. So I am thinking of buying the new Astra 3 cylinder petrol manual I know it's a fossil fueled car but I need the range, plus I feel the charging infrastructure is lagging well behind.

The good thing about the “vegan” leather steering wheel is that it doesn’t “polish” with use and always feels like new unlike real leather which feels awful after a few months.

  • @7755ian1

4 months on our LaPrima plagued with issues...Front brakes grab when stopping, sounds like mice in callipers, warning lights for tyre pressure on within 10 minutes of collection, audio not working correctly signage on within 2 weeks. Pedestrian warning sound barely audible and only sounds at 15 mph, once per journey, sos light on twice, this indicates the eu call failure, many times one must press start twice before it will "start".
It has now been 4 months since Fiat were informed about the brakes and still investigating....
Avoid this model it's not a good buy. We going to trade it in soon and buy a proper EV that has customer service focus. Check online reviews of Fiat and it's evident they don't care. One cannot review a car without using it for more than what's really a test drive over a weekend.

When these EVs use their strong regenerative brakes, do the brake lights in the back come on? I suspect not.
How would the driver behind, know that you are decelerating hard enough to stop?
These small cars are still way to expensive for people who don't want the extra gadgets and self driving fantasy.
I'll wait for some Chinese version that's a car for daily errands. Not a toy for gadget heads.
