In 1975 I completed my Ph.D. in psychology. Now, at the age of 71 I feel like I am completing a degree in physics by listening to Dr. Greene (as well as other physicists) not only in these Daily Equation episodes but in all of his talks and presentations on the internet. What a thrill it is to keep on learning in new fields! And what a joy it is to listen to Brian Greene.

Greene already covers most talk on the meta level. You may get disappointed trying to study physics, which is more or less much different at universities. There you work mostly by memorizing formulas to be successful, instead of developing contradiction-free models and later expressing them into formulas.

My first ever comment on an internet forum, has perhaps been reserved for a moment like this. And it is simply to send my condolences to Prof. Greene at this time. You only have one mother. Hi Brian,
I am sorry to hear about your mother. My deepest condolences. I wanted to express my deep gratitude to you for doing these videos. They fill a massive gap I have had for ages where the 'usual' lectures (by your and many others) have been too high level and a proper physics course too detailed and time consuming. I am sure there are many others like me, who are not laymen but also not able or willing to study physics at a university. Yet we are fascinated by physics and want to learn as much as we can. If anything, I wish there was more math in these videos:). But they have been, nevertheless, something I eagerly await every few days. I hope you will be back doing them soon and I sincerely hope you will continue until you are done even if the whole Covid situation improves markedly.

Great point about how it's far more fulfilling I would have thought, to be coming up with and exploring new ideas, rather than just writing criticism of other people's ideas all the time. After all.... how often are people remembered in history for being a great critic? Also criticising all new ideas suggests that one thinks we have reached the pinnacle of understanding, which seems unrealistic... and perhaps even a little arrogant. I am not saying no one should ever criticise of course... it's just some people seem to do only that and nothing else, and they do it to an excessive degree, often as if they are experiencing offence or fear, or some sort of negative emotional response to somebody's ideas.

Greetings again from West Wales (UK). Hope you are keeping well. Thank you for another great Q & A session yesterday, and thanks especially for taking 2 of my questions.

But from the other comments I hear that your mother has passed so I expect you will be quite distracted. Que sera for me. Commiserations to you. In your previous Q&A you happened to cover my two strongest mysteries one after the other, very eloquently, which exposed the way I need to approach my questions.
Universe in a black hole - I wonder how the universe got out of a black hole. If it used to be the size of an orange, how could it not be a black hole. If it was and the universe couldn't escape, then we must be in one.
General Relativity - Falling objects are at rest. If there are two objects in free fall on opposite sides of the planet, how does the earth run into them without expanding and why does it speed up as it moves toward them? How does it know when to speed up?

In physics, I found an incredible leaning towards one dimensional thinking. Though I learned this type of thinking is normal, it's still hard for me to believe especially when physics has wonderful people like you Brian. String Theory is more a highway than a map, not being wrong in any way but not naming itself. Einstein explains this in his work but had a hard time toggling between his type of thinking and the normal of his peers to explain it to his peers (it is exceptionally difficult to toggle between the two but is easier with practice).

Is a neutron star a star that just didn’t quite make it to being a black hole? Is a black hole just a star that got heavy enough that the gravity overcomes light or is it a different animal altogether? If a black hole eventually evaporates due to Hawking Radiation will it eventually lose enough mass to no longer be black?

We always mention these amazing minds throughout history like Newton Maxwell Einstein etc that where leaps and bounds ahead of everyone and push our knowledge further. My question has a few questions in it. Like, when do you think the next big mind will push use forward again? Do you think they already exist but will only find out in the future?maybe we won't see another mind jump us forward again as maybe there are no new big physics questions left? or we have to wait for technology to catch up to prove these theory's correct? Or maybe we now have lots of these magnificent brains in our current mix and it's hard for someone to stand out? Do you think maybe the next Einstein will be in a diffrent filled like technology that pushed are knowledge further?
I would love you to do a piece on this and have your thoughts.

Sorry about your mother, Prof Greene. I just saw a recent interview promoting your new book. You said you didn't believe that consciousness existed as quanta ,rather it's something that arises from the rubric of complex particles. If that's the case, then how do you and physicists explain the double-split-experiement? From lectures and shows I've seen, it seems as thought you're saying that the particle KNOWS when it's being observed, which would imply consciousness. Or is it that the observation instruments somehow interfere with the particle and that there is no mystery there? Any thoughts from anyone who can explain this to me? Thanks so much!

@BrianGreene - A Photon emitted from an inchoate Black Hole is overcome by subsequent accretion, slows down and reverses direction. Does that mean that this Black Hole must be somehow increasingly escaping from the entire Universe to preserve the Photon's relativistic velocity?
Or is the Speed of Light not a fundamental constant?
Really appreciate your thoughts here or please let me know if this is worthy discussion in a future live stream, so I don't miss it - Many thanks :-))

What does everyone think about light clocks ? I've been looking at the back-catalogue of YDE and am having a real problem in understanding the logic of the light clock in YDE #2 Time Dilation in two fundamental ways :
1 The photon needs to be detected each time it reflects off a mirror to register a tick or tock-- it must reflect or be absorbed for detection-- it can not do both. We can ignore this for a thought experiment and imagine a demon registers the ticks and tocks instead, allowing the photon to reflect up and down uninterrupted, but the demon can't help with my second point even in a thought experiment :
2 Suppose the light clock is placed with mirrors horizontally as in the video.
With the clock at rest, the photon must bounce precisely vertically up and down. If it were at any angle, then it would zig-zag horizontally and eventually miss one of the mirrors. Thus the photon is always repeating the same vertical path, up and down, say at x=0 when the clock is at rest ( ie. the horizontal mirrors are centred at x=0 ) .
It follows that if the clock begins to translate, say to the right on the x-axis, then the photon will continue to repeat bouncing up and down on precisely this same path x=0 ( why would it reflect at an angle different to the precise vertical since the mirror is still horizontal, and there is no force or spacetime 'curvature' to point it or drag it toward the right x>0 of its reflection point in order to 'follow' the mirror ) .
Thus the mirror translates away from vertical path x=0 of the photon and the photon will miss the mirrors once the clock has moved such that the mirror is no longer under / above the original vertical photon path at x=0, and the photon escapes to infinity at x=0.
Another way to think of this is :
Suppose you are looking at a mirror. A photon bounces off you, then the mirror into your eye. If you jump fast sideways to the mirror just as the photon leaves the mirror, the photon will not deflect to ensure it still meets your eye but stays on its original path hence you no longer see yourself in the mirror.
    What does everyone think ?
Can anyone explain why the photon would deflect to x0 just because the mirror moves ?

let's we just imagine that string theory is really true, i mean it's exist as a particle (2d particle) that made up a creature's body for being able to live in 4d universe of space
