    One system I really like is Mighty Protectors, from Monkey House Games. It's a revised & updated version of the old "Villains & Vigilantes" game from the '80s. It's a d20 system, and has options for both random character creation and point buy. I wouldn't call it "rules light", but it's not as crunchy as something like Champions. Definitely worth a look.

    There’s also Essence20: Power Rangers, GI Joe, and Transformers (and My Little Pony, but that’s not relevant to this discussion). Arguably not the best for playing a generic superhero, but definitely easily reskinnable.
    I haven’t tried building, say, Green Lantern with the system, but I bet I could. I’m already thinking of some ways now that I’ve said it.

      I need to check that system out more. It seems really cool!

      @@DiceMonkeyGames It definitely has its issues (for one thing, the editing on the books seem nonexistent at times), but there’s a lot of really cool stuff across the different franchises

    Hi. A few corrections from autistic fan of heroic RPGs :)
    - The game you've shown at the beginning, DC Heroes is NOT using D6 mechanics, but very old and very crunchy MEGS rules.
    - Both Marvel and DC RPGs had a lot of incarnations because of licensing. You've even mentioned one of them, also out-of-print Cortex version of Marvel.
    - Original Marvel RPG, done by the famous TSR (the same TSR as D&D makers) used mechanics called FASERIP by fans (from first letters of abilities used) and the mechanics is still alive even if the Marvel game is dead. Astonishing Superheroes you've mentioned is a FASERIP game. Sadly, its development stopped in eternal beta, but the ideas are used in another FASERIP game called "Heroic" which I highly recommend.
    - Besides FASERIP and CORTEX versions of Marvel there were also diceless game (almost unknown) and the newest Marvel Multiverse game which uses 3d6, and it's pretty cool. It is also officially a Marvel product so maybe it won't die as soon as previous editions.
    - Cortex system is also published as a standalone, no-trademark game toolkit, so everyone can build a heroic game using old Marvel-like or Smallville-like rules but without licensed property.
    - If we are into generic systems, HERO is very heavy, so the better choices could be GURPS (with Powers module), or even better, Savage Worlds (with Superhero companion). There is also BESM system (more anime-oriented but also with superheroic variant called Absolute Power). For narrative game fans there are also superheroic variants of Fate (like Venture City) and Cortex. And for fans of GUMSHOE there is Mutant City Blues, if you like old Batman stories more than current Cinematic Universes.

      Thanks for the corrections! I appreciate it. I should look more into the DC Heroes rules.

      @@DiceMonkeyGames good luck with finding it, it's pretty rare and unlike FASERIP, Cortex or even D6 it didn't get retro-clones or generic versions. And MEGS was used only in one other game, also out of print (and not in DTRPG)

    I have personally been playing the Marvel Multiverse RPG a lot recently, and I think its a pretty great competent system. Nothing special necessarily, but it does exactly what it sets out to do, and fairly well.

      I probably should have spent more time talking about this one, since it’s the current most prominent one.

    I'm just getting into Superhero RPGs myself - I had heard good things about AMP. What's your opinion on that one?

    • @DiceMonkeyGames
      @DiceMonkeyGames  Місяць тому

      I hadn't heard of that one! I'm looking at it now, and it looks really cool!

    • @chakravant
      @chakravant Місяць тому

      @@GenerusCrow Oh, I forgot about AMP. It has very interesting world building but the 2 abilities+D20 mechanics is somehow bland for me. And much like Mutants & Masterminds but with power trees.
      If you want specific franchise instead of generic heroic RPG, the Aberrant game (the new one, not the original) from Trinity Continuum series is very cool and competent (even if very Iron Age or even anti-heroic) system and has some storyline similarities to AMP (TEG is a studio which don't even pretend they're not massive White Wolf simps). But avoid original White Wolf edition of the game, that was mechanical mess, almost unplayable and a pain even at character creation.
