This is a pretty cool little device, Personally, I like to find what I'm looking for while doing astrophotography using Google sky map. It is cheating but it auto rotates to your position of your smart phone while looking up the sky

Would it be helpful to insert a brad above the oval to keep the wheel in place?
Yes - that is helpful, but not necessary since the wheel rests in a little pocket made by the paper sleeve.
