Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 2 new videos every week! Wednesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

Having trained many cows to milk in my 82 years, Rose is one in a million. To have only been milked 5 times now, she has a great disposition and is so easy to work with! That says a lot about your abilities too, Sarah.

A little tip from an old Dairy Farmer. Once you are done milking, a good brushing down does 3 things. 1 - it gets her used to your touch with something she enjoys. 2 - It gives you a chance to look her over to see if there are any fly larvie or injuries and 3 - It bonds her to you, so she sees you as a someone to protect, as you protect and comfort her. (Don't forget her head and neck. She may throw her head to begin with, but if any vetting is needed, it is beneficial.)
I had cows that loved the brush so much that they would moo to keep going and wouldn't leave the stall until I told them. Keep talking to both of them, they understand more language than you realize and you can teach them more commands that become useful like "Back", "Come", "Move" (Gee for right, haw for left). The earlier you start, the better. Just a suggestion.

You know what I love about living traditions? When you research something , you pas the information on to us . Not only do you pass the information on you give credit to the person you got it from. You do not take credit for yourself you gives us the information to go to so the blog that was responsible for the information gets credit and we can help them to on their journey. You two are truly following Gods way

This takes me back. We lived in town by the time I was in junior high. We had milk delivery for a while but we found a lot to rent by the R/R tracks and kept a Jersey. We kept our feed in an old ice box. When we opened that ice box, she assumed the position. She gave the richest milk! About 40% cream.
    Thanks for the memories.

Wow! Babe is just a plumb beautiful little heifer! So mighty proud FOR and OF y'all!
Usually, my posts are long, because you might remember that I grew up on a strong farm of registered Jerseys here in Northeast Mississippi (just on the Southern border of MS State University). My father was the Extension Dairyman for the MS Cooperative Extension Service. All us children raised, cared for, and showed our registered Jerseys throughout our years at home. And, just seeing this revelation about Rose and Babe brings back many, many rich memories.
Makes me wish I lived closer so I could come help with a few things as you're getting Rose settled in. If you were to choose, I'll bet you could get some very good help from your county agent and from the 4-H club members who live on dairy farms, as well.
I'm sending my very best wishes, as well as "high fives" for getting off to such a good start with Rose and Babe. Y'all will remember these days until you can't do anything but sit in the rocker on the front porch and let your grandchildren take care of you.
    Congratulations and high fives!

I grew up using the surge milkers. There is one part you are missing. Its called a Surcingle Strap. Basically its an adjustable belt that goes over the cow. It is used to suspend the tank by its handle. The notches on the handle are there to balance of the milker and prevent it from sliding. Doing it this way you keep the milker up higher, close to the belly of the cow. The teat cups are connected directly to the lid of the tank. No need for your extension hoses. The only hose you will have is the one from the pump. Which in are barn was a central line with on/off ports ABOVE every stanchion. With this setup there is less concern about them kicking anything. Not that it can't happen. We would usually milk 6 - 8 at a time so you couldn't babysit everyone to keep them from kicking. Some will do it forever and some are chill. On the aggressive kickers we also had a Kow Kant Kick.

And, although I've been gone from the family farm for many years, I kept wishing I could get my hands on one of the many halters we used on our cattle so I could send it to them and they could use it with Rose. Using a surge milker really takes me back to the 1960s and early 1970s. But, I seem to recall that we would put a belt around the cow and hang the lines and milk bucket from that. My experience was more with a 4 port pulsator and lid. And running about a dozen cows into the stalls at a time. We had to muck out, wash out and disinfect the equipment after each group. It's a lot of work to make the jump from one cow with a 2 port pulsator and lid to a bigger operation like you have discussed. I agree with the brushing comment, it helps with the tameness of the cows and lets you look for ticks and fly larvae. It lets you treat their skin and helps with their health monitoring. You have a very nice operation that looks like it will produce a very happy cow and someday cows for milking.
For the electrical, it's not only the rodents that you have to worry about, but the cleaning of the wiring. Flies also seem to love congregating on the jacket of type NM cables in a barn. Their "spots" that are left behind by the flies seem to attack the insulation. So, running in PVC conduit is a better way to go, even though in the 1950s and into the 1970s we just ran NM cables out in the open.
Thanks so much for the video experience!!!

I wish you were able to video the "breaking" of the milking process from the beginning. It would be a great learning experience for us all, but I get it, you were new at it too. Maybe when you start this process with Babe you'll be more comfortable to bring us along. Thanks for all you guys do! Congratulations on the new heifer!! precious!!

Seeing your milking machine was such a throwback for me! Our families best friends used this "state of the art" machine when I was a kid! Enjoying the richness of raw milk and hand skimming the cream with a large "Z" shaped spoon for special treats like ice cream are some of the best childhood memories. 😊

Thanks for the wonderful memories! Many many years ago when I lived in WI, I would visit the neighbors dairy farm and I always enjoyed the polka music that he would play for the cows during the milking time! Time to "Roll out the barrel"

Your cow Rose is actually well behaved in the milking stand. I remember when working on the farm when a heifer became fresh it could be a real struggle to get her milked. Some cows had to be hobbled to be milked. They just did not want to be milked.
