***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 2 new videos every week! Wednesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

Having trained many cows to milk in my 82 years, Rose is one in a million. To have only been milked 5 times now, she has a great disposition and is so easy to work with! That says a lot about your abilities too, Sarah.
A little tip from an old Dairy Farmer. Once you are done milking, a good brushing down does 3 things. 1 - it gets her used to your touch with something she enjoys. 2 - It gives you a chance to look her over to see if there are any fly larvie or injuries and 3 - It bonds her to you, so she sees you as a someone to protect, as you protect and comfort her. (Don't forget her head and neck. She may throw her head to begin with, but if any vetting is needed, it is beneficial.)
I had cows that loved the brush so much that they would moo to keep going and wouldn't leave the stall until I told them. Keep talking to both of them, they understand more language than you realize and you can teach them more commands that become useful like "Back", "Come", "Move" (Gee for right, haw for left). The earlier you start, the better. Just a suggestion.
THIS IS VERY TRUE MORE CONTACT MORE RUBBING MORE TALKING IS GREAT THEY LEARN VERY FAST AND BECOME LIKE A FAMILY PET WHICH IS GREAT. SHE IS A GREAT BREED TO HAVE. SHE WILL MAKE YOU A GREAT COW FOR MANY YEARS.
That is good advice.
@@stanmashek3085 my cow I would whistle and she would come leading the other milk cows to the barn.
What wonderful, beneficial advice.
Yes sir
You know what I love about living traditions? When you research something , you pas the information on to us . Not only do you pass the information on you give credit to the person you got it from. You do not take credit for yourself you gives us the information to go to so the blog that was responsible for the information gets credit and we can help them to on their journey. You two are truly following Gods way
This made me tear up...new baby girl and life on the homestead continues, even after a loss. Babe is beautiful!!!
I admit - I never really thought about cow training - but Sarah, you have the gift. That was amazing for how new you BOTH are!
That cow is doing amazing for only being milked 5 times!! She's a keeper for sure.
How wonderful that Rose is doing so well with her new baby AND learning how to be milked.
Sarah, you are doing a FANTASTIC job, teaching Rose how to behave during the milking process.
So happy for all of you!
Babe is such a graceful little girl already. She seems so sweet. Long, healthy life to her and her Rose. For such a new milker, she did great!! Your calm demeanor and patience really pay off with a quick train-up.
I just got home from work at about 5am.
Husband: I thought you were going to watch your show?
Me: Its saturday, you know Kevin and Sarah come first.
WELL DONE VID GUYS ! We lost 'HOPE' for a while, but a 'ROSE' is our new Gift! Beautiful calf...count your abundant blessings often...for they are MANY!!! Thank-you 4 sharing your precious time with us. Health and God Bless!
As the daughter of a retired dairy farmer, I was very impressed with your treatment of Rose, her milk, and your instructions. You are such a blessing to our community.🐄♥️
I also am a daughter of a retired dairy family, these people are so honest and trustable!💖
Babe is a beautiful calf! I am so happy for you that Rose is quickly learning her milking routine and gave birth without any problems. Your farm is so green and pretty this spring. God bless..
I have always taught my children that when one animal dies that it’s soul goes into to one being born or needs the strength to overcome a hardship. I feel your lovely cow has given her soul to strengthen your new calf and your homestead for the future.
This takes me back. We lived in town by the time I was in junior high. We had milk delivery for a while but we found a lot to rent by the R/R tracks and kept a Jersey. We kept our feed in an old ice box. When we opened that ice box, she assumed the position. She gave the richest milk! About 40% cream.
Thanks for the memories.
They old farmers use to have a few Jerseys to take up the fat in the milk, their were paid by how high the fat was.
The Lord giveth and The Lord taketh away....Blessed be the name of The Lord!
Time to leave Egypt and rely on him. That global currency is going to be a huge problem for most souls. Property taxes will make even this lifestyle very difficult when the economy goes completely digital.
Great presentation. I especially liked the background music with the calf. For those of us who thought farming was so easy, just plant and harvest, here is a wake-up to how organized and proactive a farmer must be to have and keep a self-sufficient homestead,
Gosh...what an absolute joy to have watched Sarah over time to become comfortable and confident with your milk cows. She’s a total champ!
CONGRATULATIONS ON ROSE'S BIRTH!!! TO HAVE EVERYTHING GOING SO SMOOTHLY AND TO TOP IT OFF, TO GET "BABE" A HEAFER CALF, IS FANTASTIC!! PLUS TO SEE 'ROSE' BEHAVING LIKE A 'PRO' DURING HER FIRST MILKING EXPERIENCES!! MAY 'ROSE' CONTINUE TO PROVIDE YOU WITH INCREASED CALVES, THUS ENLARGING YOUR NEW FUTURE DAIRY HERD!!!
Wow! Babe is just a plumb beautiful little heifer! So mighty proud FOR and OF y'all!
Usually, my posts are long, because you might remember that I grew up on a strong farm of registered Jerseys here in Northeast Mississippi (just on the Southern border of MS State University). My father was the Extension Dairyman for the MS Cooperative Extension Service. All us children raised, cared for, and showed our registered Jerseys throughout our years at home. And, just seeing this revelation about Rose and Babe brings back many, many rich memories.
Makes me wish I lived closer so I could come help with a few things as you're getting Rose settled in. If you were to choose, I'll bet you could get some very good help from your county agent and from the 4-H club members who live on dairy farms, as well.
I'm sending my very best wishes, as well as "high fives" for getting off to such a good start with Rose and Babe. Y'all will remember these days until you can't do anything but sit in the rocker on the front porch and let your grandchildren take care of you.
Congratulations and high fives!
Oh my gosh, those eyes! So cute. Thank you for mentioning The Kneady Homesteader a couple of weeks ago, her go fund me is at $540,000 this morning, people have been overwhelmingly generous.
Outstanding! Rose has big shoes to fill as Hope was a dream cow. She’s a good girl and knows she’s got an amazing home and family to care for her. Babe....you’re precious! So fun to be able to watch them in the background.
We used bag balm on our cows udders. My dad used it on his hands in the winter because his hands would get really dry and cracked.
Yup! We didn't have cattle but we always used it as hand lotion.
I’m from Illinois we milked 50 head. We used bag balm and I still use it today. Great stufff. Love the can.
We used to have a back strap to hold up lines. Might be able to find on line. We also used hobbles for back legs to keep from kicking.
5-7 minutes was the time most cows milked out.
I just used bag balm on my hands last night.
I really love that you keep the cow and her calf together, and share the milk. It is the natural way, and I think it contributes to good health and happiness for both the cow and the calf.
Looking at the milk, I was inspired to see how simple yet magnificent is God’s love for us. Think of it, from the tiny 🐝 bee that gives us honey, to the larger cow 🐄 that feeds us with Milk.
Thank you Heavenly Father.
Watching God in his infinite wisdom and gracious love for us. Blessed be His name.
Yes, yes, and Amen
Amen! Well said. To God be the glory...🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Amen 🙏
I can cry with happiness in my pea patch when I think of how God gave us so much. All we need to do is apply a little effort and our rewards are huge.
God has blessed you all! Knowing what you need. Not what we want but what we need.
Seeing Sarah happy made me so joyous I teared up.. Congrats Sarah and Kevin! Congrats Rose and welcome to the world Babe!!
Congratulations on the new calf! Rose sure does get the royal treatment at milking time! She is a very lucky cow. It is always a pleasure and a privilege to share in your homesteading journey. Thanks so much for sharing. See you next time!
I love the fact that you're gentle and caring of all your animals. Rose & Babe look well and healthy. Be well & safe. God bless.
Rose walked into that milking station like she has been doing it all of her life. Great cow.
amen, what a blessing....., just wonderful to see. God bless
You guys grow such quality fruits and veggies the best bless you both
Sarah, it no surprise that Rose is doing so well. You are so gentle and reassuring. She trusts you.
The Lord is good. What a blessing!! A baby girl ! Welcome, Babe. Congratulations Sarah and Kevin. Your Homestead is growing beautifully. Thanks for sharing your life with all of us. God bless. 🙏🌻💕🙏🌻💕
So happy for you all. Rose looks so sweet and Baby is so cute.
Babe ; looks like a healthy frisky little darling . Rose has adapted very well in the short time she's been with you . She's a lucky girl to be part of your homestead !!! God Bless . be safe . be well and prosper .
I grew up using the surge milkers. There is one part you are missing. Its called a Surcingle Strap. Basically its an adjustable belt that goes over the cow. It is used to suspend the tank by its handle. The notches on the handle are there to balance of the milker and prevent it from sliding. Doing it this way you keep the milker up higher, close to the belly of the cow. The teat cups are connected directly to the lid of the tank. No need for your extension hoses. The only hose you will have is the one from the pump. Which in are barn was a central line with on/off ports ABOVE every stanchion. With this setup there is less concern about them kicking anything. Not that it can't happen. We would usually milk 6 - 8 at a time so you couldn't babysit everyone to keep them from kicking. Some will do it forever and some are chill. On the aggressive kickers we also had a Kow Kant Kick.
That’s a great blessing . Babe is beautiful..GOD BLESS YOU ALL
Tell Rose that I said she is a very good and beautiful cow and her daughter is as cute as cute can be. Congratulations on these two new additions to the farm. Thanks for sharing.
Omigoodness, is there anything sweeter than seeing that little calf run and frolic?? So, so cute. 💕
Happy tears!!!! An amazing blessing!!!!! God is good!!!! Beautiful! Love the name 💕 so thankful for you and your family!
If I was told I could only watch one UA-cam channel.......It would be yours. You guys are someone I would want to be neighbors with. Love Rose, and her beautiful baby....oh my gosh the homestead is full of babies. I bet your parents and the girls are just thrilled with all the new babies running around. Hugs guys.
What a fantastic girl! She is doing great at learning the ropes. She also gives beautiful golden milk. Congratulations on a wonderful addition to the family.
Rose seems very calm and relaxed after all the new experiences she's had to endure this week. Being trailered, new people, calving, new surroundings and being milked the first time. She ought to make a fine addition to the farm. Glad things have worked out so well after Hope and Henry.
Awww baby Babe is so adorable.... Rose is very well behaved also. A credit to all of the hard work you do in training your animals and treating them with respect and dignity.
Congratulations! I hope that Rose and Babe both live very long, healthy and happy lives.
Our milk cow was named Babe and your new calf, Babe, looks just like her! ❤️❤️ Our Babe is the reason I love Jerseys. They have the sweetest faces! Congratulations!
You couldn't of asked for a cuter or sweeter looking calf...she's adorable! Love her name...it fits her...
Rose and Babe are darling!! New life!! So beautiful. ♥️❣️🙏🏼❣️♥️
You are bringing back memories. I was raised on a Jersey diary farm. We milked around 200 cows twice a day. In the spring, it was my job to bottle feed the baby girls. We always sold the little bull calves. I usually had about 30 are more. Naturally I love Jerseys. God bless you all.
@Von Squirrel, your advice will help them a great deal. Like you, I grew up among registered Jerseys--and tip-top notch Jerseys, at that. So, it is people like you who will be of inestimable positive value to Kevin and Sarah as they grow their Jersey herd.
Did you two ever raw eggs 🥚 to your calves when they were small.
@@vernonvest9927 no, we never did
@@nctplarry thank you
Sarah and Kevin I just love you two. I loved it when Rose went to Kevin and looked in the camera. Babe is so cute. Congratulations on the new calf and pig. God bless your homestead. ♥️♥️
OMGosh! What a wonderful spring blessing to have two Jersey milkers to look forward to! Babe is just as beautiful as her mama is. Dare I say everything looks to be coming up....Rose's🌹 this spring, 😆! Congratulations on the new addition to the homestead and God bless everyone! 🌺🌿🌺🌿🌺😊😷
Congrats Kevin and Sara on your new pair of dairy cattle 🐄 🐄 , babe 👶 is a gorgeous calf , glad to see rose 🌹 gettin use to the milking machine . 👍
Rose and her daughter will be a blessing to your farm!
Baby Babe is so cute! I love her blonde color. Rose is doing a wonderful job at her new position of motherhood.
My sister and I were raised on Jersey milk. My mother would pasteurize the milk till we were a year old, then we were on our own. I still have the pasteurizer and the Mix-master butter churn. My dad would always give the barn cats a pan of milk when he milked the Jersey cow. There is nothing like the cream from a Jersey!
Rose & Babe are so beautiful!!! What a blessing to find Rose from a local farmer! I think you folks are so awesome ... I really enjoy your videos.
May i gently suggest that Rose''s neck collar be shortened to prevent a calf leg from being caught in it. I love the way you are bonding with your cow in such a gentle manner.
I had the same concern, but Sarah explained at the end of the video that's it's a break away collar, which will pop open if it gets caught on anything.
I'm with you on this. And, although I've been gone from the family farm for many years, I kept wishing I could get my hands on one of the many halters we used on our cattle so I could send it to them and they could use it with Rose. We had baby calf halters, too, so they would grow up expecting that kind of "attire" for their beautiful bodies.
Rose is very well mannered. She looks a lot like Hope. Looking forward to seeing more of her and her calf. 👍
Welcome Babe! What a lovely addition to the farm. Bless you guys! 🙏😊❤️🐮
Don't ya just love to see those little calves when they jump around and kick their heels? Mom is so calm and accepting of this little lady. You are blessed.
By the way, I ordered & have received t-shirts (4 each/purple with white lettering) from Elly and Grace. The saying on the shirts is: "Grace Changes Everything." Their packaging and inspirational info is awesome! I am giving one to my sister and one each to the best sister-in-laws in the world, plus keeping one for myself.
Thanks for allowing me to be a part of your family. Cheryl from Annandale, Minnesota :-)
Jersey's have the sweetest face of any breed of cattle. The cow's are usually sweet but BOY 'O BOY, can the bull's ever be mean! LOL
Babe is so precious and Hope is doing a great job especially in such a short time. She had big shoes to fill and she is doing mighty fine! She feels right at home
I am so happy about your new cows. I really believed God had something special in store for you after your recent hardships. I know how hard it is to have to put down animals on your farm. But God is good and in time we can see how perfect His will is for us. I loved watching this video, thank you so much.
I love the positive thoughts you are giving Ros and the corrections as well with your voice well done!!! She is a beautiful Cow so is he baby!!!
Rose is doing great. Babe is adorable and will be a great addition to your homestead.
Babe! What a perfect name for that sweet little girl. What a blessing she is. The lord is holding you in His mighty hand!
That calf is so cute. I just love her. So sweet! Rose is beautiful.
WOW!! How exciting that you now have 2 females! What a blessing that is. So happy that everything went well for you guys and for Rose!
I do believe miss rose is going to be such a wonderful addition to your homestead!!!
IT JUST SEEMS A FEW DAYS AGO WHEN YOU GOT THE NEW COW, NOW A BABY LESS THAN A WEEK AGO, AND ITS A GIRL NOW YOU HAVE 2 MILKERS!!! CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN AND OF COURSE GOD BLESS YOU, KATHRYN!!!
Wow, I am surprised how well Rose did. Awesome! So glad the birth went well, and you are getting milk. So happy for you all.
You please take care and be safe.
Using a surge milker really takes me back to the 1960s and early 1970s. But, I seem to recall that we would put a belt around the cow and hang the lines and milk bucket from that. My experience was more with a 4 port pulsator and lid. And running about a dozen cows into the stalls at a time. We had to muck out, wash out and disinfect the equipment after each group. It's a lot of work to make the jump from one cow with a 2 port pulsator and lid to a bigger operation like you have discussed. I agree with the brushing comment, it helps with the tameness of the cows and lets you look for ticks and fly larvae. It lets you treat their skin and helps with their health monitoring. You have a very nice operation that looks like it will produce a very happy cow and someday cows for milking.
For the electrical, it's not only the rodents that you have to worry about, but the cleaning of the wiring. Flies also seem to love congregating on the jacket of type NM cables in a barn. Their "spots" that are left behind by the flies seem to attack the insulation. So, running in PVC conduit is a better way to go, even though in the 1950s and into the 1970s we just ran NM cables out in the open.
Thanks so much for the video experience!!!
Wow! So happy for you guys. Rose seems very quiet & gentle. Nice formed udder & yet gives lots of milk for a 1st calf. Enjoy!
I wish you were able to video the "breaking" of the milking process from the beginning. It would be a great learning experience for us all, but I get it, you were new at it too. Maybe when you start this process with Babe you'll be more comfortable to bring us along. Thanks for all you guys do! Congratulations on the new heifer!! precious!!
Adorable. Nothing cuter than baby animals. Congratulations.
Rose was such a good girl. LOVE Babe!!!! Congrats y'all!!!
Welcome to the world, Babe!! ..... I think that your voice is soothing to Rose. She keeps hearing the 'good girl' in that same tone.
Seeing your milking machine was such a throwback for me! Our families best friends used this "state of the art" machine when I was a kid! Enjoying the richness of raw milk and hand skimming the cream with a large "Z" shaped spoon for special treats like ice cream are some of the best childhood memories. 😊
Thank you, you are preparing me for how to raise my future animals, the tone of voice, color around her neck, these things you do keep your homestead safe and healthy thank you again
Oh your new Babe is so cute! Rose seems to be happy with her new life too. So glad to see your hardship turned around into so many happy events. 💕 congratulations on your good events. Blessing to all. Wishing you all the Best ,
Thanks for the wonderful memories! Many many years ago when I lived in WI, I would visit the neighbors dairy farm and I always enjoyed the polka music that he would play for the cows during the milking time! Time to "Roll out the barrel"
Rose is working out so well! And little Babe is just adorable! Good luck in the process of training her.❤️😘🙏🏻
I’m impressed by the way you two handle the blessings of the Lord on your lives. I am enjoying following your journey. God bless you both!👩🌾💛🌻☀️
So happy tragedy & sadness provided, in the end, a lil miracle. Well done youses! She's ADORABLE!
God knows exactly what we need so thanking God for his blessings.
What a healthy cow and calf , congratulations, such a great asset for your family🐄🐄
Good morning. So happy to see Rose and Babe. They are both beautiful. God Bless.
Babe is so adorable. I love the babies. They are one of the best parts of the farm.
Beautiful new baby girl calf. Enjoy this youngster and Rose is amazing
Really liked the musical sequence with Rose and Babe. 🐮🥰
Wow how terrific!! So happy for you. Sarah you are so gentle and soothing for this new mommy. So glad you are good to her. I grew up on a small dairy farm and a calm manner makes the learning process more positive. Thanks for the link to the recipe.
Rose is going to be a great mom and addition to the family.
Over the moon happy for the farm to have a brand new baby and have it be a heifer
Great job Sarah & Rose ! Rose's calf is beautiful and so sweet. Sounds like some wonderful plans will be unfolding as you go forward. God bless you and the girls 😍🙏💞👼
It was an amazing news you had share with us , I do appreciate it , good luck with your new cattle born .
God brings his grace and happiness and blessing in to your life .
Have a lovely and joyful weekend .
Babe...what a delightful name! Congratulations to your family and Rose 👏🏼 👏🏼
Your cow Rose is actually well behaved in the milking stand. I remember when working on the farm when a heifer became fresh it could be a real struggle to get her milked. Some cows had to be hobbled to be milked. They just did not want to be milked.
You all are living the dream♥️. I’m totally addicted to your wonderful homestead! I’m binge watching and it’s helping me through a rough time I’m having. So thank you 🙏
Hi Rose, you are such a lovely good girl... an congratulations on your first baby girl...look forward in seeing more of you and your future babies...
Congratulations on your new animals and the baby is just darling. So glad you are having a great time with Rose and so sad to hear about Hope. I loved her.
God bless to you all and welcoming in spring with a bang it looks like at your place. So glad to see the sun!
Congrats on your new milk cow and baby cow. So happy for you both to be continuing after the loss of your first cows. I am sorry for your losses. But I am so happy that you are learning more and more as you continue your journey towards sustainability. Wonderful job you do for your homestead. Take care.
Babe is adorable. Congratulations Mom and Dad.
