Most garden pests fly in and lay eggs directly on the plants and the caterpillars eat them. Grasshoppers also fly. Most beetles can fly. They will bypass the chickens.
My grasshoppers are wise: they fly, see the chickens and either turn around or fly higher to keep away from them. Once the orchard gets established maybe these folks can let the chickens and ducks free-range around the trees to get some of the bugs that fly over the moat.

Thank you for all your great videos. I am 57 yrs old and this is the first time I learned where the seeds are on a sunflower from watching your Aug 29, 2020 vid. I grew a couple one time a few years ago and threw them away because I just thought they didn't produce. Can't wait to grow some now that I know. A lot of people don't know this so thank you for your teachings.
I've watched so many homesteaders do that routine of carrying seedlings in and out of the greenhouse during the transition of seasons. Seems a shame to have to still spend so much time doing that menial task during an extremely busy time of year. If I were building a greenhouse I would do separate covers for the top and sides. Install a rod along the bottom of the top cover, jigger a rope and pulley system (like a window roller shade) and roll that sucker up at least halfway to the peak. This would also make it quick and easy to drop the cover in a flash if a storm rolls through.
That is a lot tagged plants. Piglets are so very cute. Anxious to watch this Moat work, for deer and chickens! On the coop door. Just put hinges so you can swing either way. Love to see the ducks talking to each other chattering! How smart to build a trellis over the fences for the chickens.
Looks gorgeous! Very clever. Maybe some herbs/garlic on the orchard side of the fence - not near the trellis - that are reachable through the fence by the chickens as the herbs grow, that are natural parasite food chickens can peck on as and when they require it. Perhaps some currant bushes too. Spread the harvest love! 😀 Read that as a tip on one of the chicken websites.
I really love this idea of the double fence and letting the chickens run in it; and now with the trellises, it's going to be cool for the chickens, productive, and cool to look at.
These are one of the best ideas you guys have come up with, yet. Kind of a "set it and forget it" benefit to the farm. It may take a light amount of work, but for the most part God and the rain do the work. Brilliant! Many prayers!
We have a bunch of aerial predators, hawks, eagles and turkey vultures. We saw a hawk follow the chickens as they ran away from him into their outdoor fenced and covered enclosure! I had a golden eagle get one of my ducks in a 4x4ft area, the Eagle got all caught up in the fence but eventually flew out after dropping the dead duck. So it does happen unfortunately, and I learned my lesson to always have cover.
Hello Kevin and Sarah. I've been watching your videos for a few months now, and I enjoy seeing the progress you are making around your place. I'm jealous. God bless you all.
Such a great idea for protection and growing. Around the moat would be a great place for some of your sunflowers too. Your videos are so inspiring. Thank you for sharing.
Bald eagles are actually mostly scavengers, surprised me when found that out. I wonder about skunks and other small predators like mink or weasel as they can decimate a flok aswell.
good morning guys!! I love the arch trellises, such a wonderful multi purpose idea. Is there any way ya'll could do a video on how you manage your time for getting everything done? That has been such a difficult thing to nail down in my own life 😅 I'm amazed at how much ya'll accomplish.
Perfect! I thought it would be a great opportunity to use trellises. Your chickens and ducks will appreciate your thoughtfulness. Plus the trellises will give you more spaces to grow and also seek cover in the hot sun while you harvest and tend to your birds.
Have you done a video on how you plan, purchase and store all your animal feed? I don’t remember one and I assume you guys buy in bulk? Just an idea! Thanks for the updates!!
Although I would normally agree about aerial predators, I have to say I lost two 20 pound turkeys one year when an immature Great grey owl got through a hole in the top of my run...so they may not carry them away, but they will eat in place, especially when no activity around as was the case in my run. I think he came back this year as a mature owl, but could not get in...lol. Run looks good though....I like the idea of grapes over some of the runs. Cool project. Take care and God Bless.

Looking through the comment..I like the Rose suggestion. A nice old fashioned climber that the bees and hummingbirds will love. Much love to your family. Thank you for sharing.
What a great addition to the chicken moat. There’s so many things that you could grow over that fencing. Somebody said maybe grapes. But it could be just about anything, green beans anything that grows on a vine. It’ll be fun to watch what’s your next move.
@@LivingTraditionsHomestead I didn’t doubt that I just didn’t know if it was just in the coop or outside as well and what you were using. I know you take beautiful care of your animals❤️
For the chicken door. Make a track on either side of the door the width of the plywood you are using. Put the barrel lock on the outside and a rope overhead to pull the door up. Put a ring on the end of the rope and a nail to secure the rope when the door is opened to height. That way is can be opened/closed from outside the coop plus it is lockable. Jim
We closed in the top with shadecloth and in places light weight mesh,. Benefits are that you can leave the coup door opening they can come and go as they please. Works for us at any rate.
It is lovely to see your fun projects that you do over the homesteads. You have come so far Kevin and Sarah. Hope the girls are well? and how are your parents enjoying it there? Kevin, hope they have settled in well. I love your moat and well done to all the hard work you did with putting up the fencing, looks fantastic.
Maybe some wire on the chicken door & lock blocks would allow you to open from the outside too. I love the project & it's something that can grow every year!
Greetings from South Africa 🇿🇦 Just thinking out loud here, would the deers not be able to eat whatever you are planting on these trellises... If there is a possibility of it, Kevin this would be a great spot for you to hunt during deer season
Thin sheets of clear plexiglass lets you see through them and you can drill small holes in the corners and attach them to the fence and that allows light to get in and the chickens out.
Good morning! We are thinking about doing the same thing with our chickens not around our garden you guys inspired us to do this idea! And we also built a chicken coop out of pallets! I’m gonna build a smaller version of the big one for scoop around the garden! We made a video on the coop on our channel and will be doing the fencing soon!
Sarah, You now have a huge fence line to plant sunflowers. If you plant on each side, it will give the chickens shade also....like 6 ft sections of sunflowers. Just a thought.
When you mentioned predators from the air, I remembered an incident where a Chicken Hawk flew onto my Mothers patio, caught a cardinal at the birdfeeder. Then just sat there on top of one of the lawn chairs with the bird in its clutch. My Mom quickly ran to the door with a broom to get the Chicken Hawk to release the songbird, but it was to late the cardinal was dead. In short, Chicken Hawks are real bold hunters and not afraid of humans, when it comes to the hunt.
I have bald eagles and merlins and a tiny little one called a kestrel I just ran fishing line over my coop yard (no free range here too many predators ) it works well. But I have rabbits and ground hogs all over due to my wood pile being a safe haven. The bald eagle seems only interested in the rabbits and ground hog.
Thank you I liked chicken and from start to fully grown, it is joyful amazing to watch them growing up, thank you for your hard work may you be reward.

I like the idea of the doubled fence run and the arched cattle panel covers not only are great protection but add esthetics to your farm. 👍👍
I had a golden eagle get one of my ducks in a 4x4ft area, the Eagle got all caught up in the fence but eventually flew out after dropping the dead duck. So it does happen unfortunately, and I learned my lesson to always have cover.
The cattle panel hoops are so helpful, and this another creative way to use them!! Thank you for sharing with all of us!
Bkessings in abundance!!
Hello Kevin and Sarah. I've been watching your videos for a few months now, and I enjoy seeing the progress you are making around your place. I'm jealous. It is evident that you care deeply for your critters, and that is key to raising healthy and happy livestock. What is more inspiring to me is the way that the two of you work together.
What a nice addition. So many new additions or expansions on your homestead and that’s exciting for all.
Hello, love everything you do, you are living my dreams😃 thank you for sharing your life
Great comment. I hope you get your dream ❤️
Such a beautiful homestead,so well taken cared.
You always give us great ideas! Thanks so much. We plan on doing this moat system with the arches, but on a smaller scale. Thanks for the idea!
This may be the best use of a "old" system yet. The possibilities are endless! Aesthetically, educationally, and all around beauty. Well done!
good morning guys!!
Absolutely. It’s going to look great.
Have you done a video on how you plan, purchase and store all your animal feed? I don’t remember one and I assume you guys buy in bulk? Just an idea! Thanks for the updates!!
I think they do because it is cheaper to
Great question JCT
Although I would normally agree about aerial predators, I have to say I lost two 20 pound turkeys one year when an immature Great grey owl got through a hole in the top of my run...so they may not carry them away, but they will eat in place, especially when no activity around as was the case in my run. I think he came back this year as a mature owl, but could not get in...lol. Run looks good though....I like the idea of grapes over some of the runs. Cool project. Take care and God Bless.
Time for an automatic Chicken Door Opener. Also what do the Ducks do about Water?
There is water in there for the chickens and ducks.
An automatic chicken door would be great. We really want one of those...but they are costly.
Like I’m always saying you really think things out and do a great job. I really am for keeping things looking neat and tidy. I am excited to see the fruits of your labor. Blessings.
When you were bringing out the plants from the greenhouse it looked like it was on loop with trip after trip. 😂
Looking through the comment..I like the Rose suggestion. A nice old fashioned climber that the bees and hummingbirds will love. Much love to your family. Thank you for sharing.
It would be really cool if eventually your whole most was covered!
The chickens would need sunny areas as well but the arches covered in green will look beautiful.
@@clarechomyn9686 or Roses since it is by the road. ❤️
What a great addition to the chicken moat. There’s so many things that you could grow over that fencing. Somebody said maybe grapes. But it could be just about anything, green beans anything that grows on a vine. It’ll be fun to watch what’s your next move.
What are you doing for water for the chickens and the ducks? I so wish I had the homestead you all have! Tough doing things alone. God bless!
There is water in there for the chickens and ducks.
Jim
Good morning from another early bird
We closed in the top with shadecloth and in places light weight mesh,. Benefits are that you can leave the coup door opening they can come and go as they please. Works for us at any rate.
Where can the plant label printer be bought?
Please share where to buy
Great question. That thing is a big time...time saver. Lol
The trellis idea is great! Would they work for sweet potatoes possibly as well as the squash and cucumbers? Bless ya all!
Sweet potatoes add more roots wherever the vines make soil contact and more tubers, so I don't think trellising them would be advantageous.
The chickens will eat the vines.
Maybe some wire on the chicken door & lock blocks would allow you to open from the outside too.
I love the project & it's something that can grow every year!
Greetings from South Africa 🇿🇦
Just thinking out loud here, would the deers not be able to eat whatever you are planting on these trellises... If there is a possibility of it, Kevin this would be a great spot for you to hunt during deer season
Great idea, but hunting season is after harvest
not very sporting - luring the deer to their death
Thin sheets of clear plexiglass lets you see through them and you can drill small holes in the corners and attach them to the fence and that allows light to get in and the chickens out.
Looks like you need more piggy bowls!
Lol..i thought the SAME THING! 😆
Yes. That spotted runt keeps getting pushed out.
It will be fun to see when the plants are in full growth later in the year. Thanks for your videos, they are such fun to watch.
You guys make such a great team! I love the way y'all work together to get things done around the homestead. Blessings!
You're going to have some fat happy chickens eating all those bugs!
Lol great comment
@@Emeraldwitch30 I've never heard the fishing line trick. Thank you. God bless you.
Thank you I liked chicken and from start to fully grown, it is joyful amazing to watch them growing up, thank you for your hard work may you be reward.
Early birds? Almost lunchtime in UK. Thanks for such interesting videos.
5:39 AM in Texas.
Thanks for all you do in sharing your journey with us
I was sad your video didn't come in closed caption. I'm deaf.
Have a Blessed day
You have to wait a few hours. Watch tomorrow, and subtitles will be there.
@@Stoffmonster467 i agree it usually gets CC the next day. I watch several videos from other countries and while subbed to them I have to wait about 24 hours for most to be CC in English
Watch some of their older videos till its ready lol. Im bad about binge watching lol
@Karon Goodine. Did you see Uta Hill's comment about subtitles?
@@stepone6159 yes, thanks
Every thing is looking so nice . Love Yahs. Bless your Hearts.
Love from india guys 😁😁😁
Have you looked into a guardian goose? Might be another layer of protection for the chickens/ducks.
You can tell the ducks don't like the chickens, stayed away in coop, then when feeding time came, they held back, one went in, told other 2 quick get in here at the end, they are a little and then said "ok that's good, let's get away from them" lol
Wow, nice to see the piglets. Thank you for sharing your story.
Easy fix on the door, just attach it to the other side, when you go in to open it take it off and out with you. Great ideas and thank you for sharing.
We adore watching your videos and wish you every success in future endeavors. My husband an I for the first 20 years of marriage worked together day and night to not only run our business but to also raise our Family and build our home. Its only 11 acres, we started with bare land but over the years the 2 of us not only put a home but also a barn, indoor arena, outdoor arena, chicken coops, pig pens, cattle penns and horse runs, also a small orchard and gardens along with a pool and picnic area....when you work with the one you love it is truly amazing what can be accomplished
Super good idea. Anxious to see it when the vines grow a good canopy and the chickens are enjoying the run.
It amazes me how nice your property looks with so much land around. Nice gravel road, cut grass. I really don’t know how you do it all.
How smart and effective! I see watermelons, cantaloupe, gourds, zucchini, and other ground hogging plants. It will free up so much garden space! The grape vines are a wonderful idea too! So many options. Love you and your channel! You certainly are inspiring, god loving people!
Yes, so many great possibilities.
