What Happened to Colin From The Simpsons Movie?

- Lisa Simpson has had a lot of romantic storylines over the years: With level five vegans, Nelson, Milhouse, Ralph, An automated hotline … and many, many others.
But unlike those where we saw how and why they failed, there’s one anomaly. Colin from The Simpsons Movie. He seemed to tick every one of Lisa’s boxes, and it really looked like their relationship would outlive the movie. Because, by the end of it, they walked off into the sunset, almost as though they were gonna live happily ever after… Or at least a few more episodes together.
So what happened - Why did he disappear? Did the creators ever plan on bringing him back? And would bringing him back even be a good move?
Let’s get into it.

The reason it bugged me that he never returned is that he wasn't played by some expensive guest star, he was voiced by Tress MacNeille, a regular actress on the series.
Agreed
SAME.

@@EditorOfSLactually, that’s a real Irish accent - I don’t think the VA was Irish but that’s a real accent
Here's an in-universe theory on why Colin never appeared after the movie. Colin mentioned his father is a musician and while he's not Bono, he is still a musician, who may or may not go on tours. Either that or Colin moved back to Ireland.
I hadn't thought of that, but the tour explanation really makes sense! That's why he's still occasionally seen in Springfield when he's not on tour with his dad, but that's not super often! Thank you for commenting this, it really bugged me that he just didn't come back and there was no explanation, but I like this. This is what happened in my head now.
It also explains why there was no on-screen break up (I think there would have had to be a proper "goodbye" if he'd moved back to Ireland or somewhere else) - I imagine he would have said something like "hey, Lisa, I'm not going to be around for a while, I still like you but no hard feelings if you end up meeting someone else."
Wait he makes appearances?@@lenabluejay1166
I 100% agree Lydia! I never thought Collin was going to be anything but a movie character, but I loved watching this breakdown and you did make a few points in his favor that I hadn’t thought about if they decided to keep him around. Hank Scorpio not being used in the movie, though is still my biggest disappointment! As you said he may not have been as accessible, but he’s so freaking iconic! At least Herb is coming back again according to reports so that’s very exciting! You should definitely do a Shawna breakdown that would be cool!
Thanks Josh! Will be interesting to see how they bring Herb back
@@TheSimpsonsTheory You’re welcome and and it will for sure! I’m looking forward to it!
@@TheSimpsonsTheoryI think the writers aren't interested bringing Colin back to The Simpsons (1989).
It would be nice If He was shown in later episodes for Lisa
@@JoshRazauskas I think Herb will probably be a cameo, since he's appearing in an episode called Bart's Birthday. The synopsis is about him doing a prank, sure Herb will just get one line
0:19 i love how she sounds like marge when she's happy/in love
“Lisa’s got a boyfriend,
That she’ll never see again!”

Funnily aged quote aside, Colin is the second best boyfriend Lisa ever had (everyone knows Nelson is the first).
@@AquaJulieMarine I only very recently realized how meta that line is lol
Gotta nuke something- inspirational quote by Nelson muntz
I never saw Colin as a serious series character, because his character was basically "Lisa's perfect partner". Simpsons doesn't do perfect. I also remember Lisa's fawning over him better than Colin himself, which doesn't speak well for his longevity.
One of My Favorite Parts of the movie was when Milhouse tried convince Lisa that Colin died; Only to have Colin walk up behind him much Milhouse's own embarrassment before reuniting with Lisa.
0:42 I LOVE THE POOCHIE REFERENCE!!! It brings back memories of the classic Simpsons era!
We all know why Colin never returned. He only got the gig in the movie cause the writers thought his dad was Bono. When they found out he wasn’t, they dumped him off in Shelbyville to be their problem.
I think I do remember wanting Collin to return in the core series after the movie! Also, you've just reminded me the Simpsons Movie is nearly 20 years old, holy shit.
Lisa's got a boyfriend that she'll never see again.
You should do an episode based on how all the "permanent" changes the characters went through.
For example how Lisa became a vegetarian being a permanent change
And Lisa being a Buddhist
You can thank Paul and Linda McCartney for that one. Their one condition for appearing on The Simpsons was that Lisa becomes a vegetarian. The showrunners agreed that the change would make perfect sense for her character and hence the episode "Lisa the Vegetarian" was born.
@@joshpetzoldt6344 what other changes can you think of?. Ned Flanders wives dieing, Barney temporary stoped drinking for a while, Bart got a new teacher, ect
@@angelagonzalez8250 Apu getting married with Manjula becoming recurring, then both disappearing; Edna and Skinner having a sort of relationship that ended a few seasons later; Milhouse's parents divorce...
@@angelagonzalez8250 There's also Kumiko moving to Springfield and marrying Comic Book Guy, Homer's mum dying, Lisa becoming a Buddhist, Selma adopting Ling, I'm sure there's still quite a few more
0:42 great gag.
Collin left because of the reason all of Lisa's love interests left...he was there to move the plot along for one episode, or in this case, the movie. I honestly don't think he'd be too useful in the show past his time in the movie.
Yeah, he's basically a "Satellite Love Interest" for Lisa.
I always did wonder what happened to him, cuz he was literally abandoned after the movie! Awesome video Lydia!
I guess Bart wasn’t lying when he said “Lisa got a boyfriend that she’ll never again.”
LOL
To me the best way to add a new character is like they did with Kumiko - Big introduction episode, then small parts to get us used to the character - and then start giving them more screen time.
The problem most shows have with these new characters is big intro and then they never go the hell away. All stories become about them or how they understand the story/react to it. To the point the main cast is usually a supporting cast to tell stories about New Character (TM).
Shows that better introduce new characters to a longer running show find the best success of giving them a debut episode that focuses on them /just/ enough to give the audience a pretty decent understanding of who they are and what they want. Then sprinkle them in to give them a little flavor but don't let them take over the episodes. Then have an episode or two where they're a more major role, but still a supporting character. And then have their own episode focused on them to really introduce them. [So the introduction episode is "Who they are and how the main cast sees/interacts with them - the focused "their own episode" puts them in the spot of the main character FOR THAT EPISODE so we can see who they are w/o the main cast.] And their own episode can be seasons later if need be.
All that being said, I think giving us more Colin COULD work. Bring him back and give the story that after the fiasco his musician dad wanted to break association with the town - but either couldn't and thus eventually moved back - or saw the spark gone from his son and he moved back. Start out with us still seeing Lisa's perfect boyfriend - but then slowly adjust him to be a Springfielder.
Make it totally the "She's so in love she sees no flaws in him" type thing and maybe have it that no one else "sees" them to avoid breaking her heart. But, like a real couple, once they're more established and settled in, she sees little quirks in Colin that maybe at first, put her off of him.
Could do an entire episode of her becoming disgusted by things, could over exaggerate his flaws in that episode. Like maybe he picks his nose so when she sees him do it it's extra gross and stuff. And then she beaks it off - and maybe she talks to Marge and is like "How do you handle that?! Gross!" and Marge points out that love isn't always easy, it's work. Could even do a meta thing about how for a bit she and Homer were basically at each other and then she realized all those little things weren't as bad as she thought they were and they had time to reconnect and really fall back in love and she remembered why she fell for Homer all those years ago and started a family with him. And then maybe the next time Lisa sees Colin doing his bad habit, it's more realistically not a huge deal. And maybe the episode ends with her apologizing to Colin for overreacting.
And then they could just rebuild from there something more real. It doesn't take away from her potential future relationships either because they're still just kids. And it could easily be explained that his dad gets more work again when they're in middle school or something [reunion/reboot tours] and he moves around again and they just grow apart. Or maybe some other world event comes up that they just don't agree on for some reason and they both decide to mutually break it off. Could even have a thing like she does with Nelson in some futures where they're still good friends - they just don't date anymore.
1:23 sorry you had to see that. We all had similar experiences as kids.
6:16 you make a very good point there. My wife actually does not watch the show even though we both grew up in the 90s and The Simpsons was in its prime back then, but she actually really loves watching the movie even though she doesn't really watch the show like at all even old episodes.
Bring Collin back in an episode similar to Days of Future Future where it wouldn’t hurt the continuity of the show and would alienate new viewers since these episodes are not canon and change the characters only for that episode. That’s just my thought
It’s a shame we didn’t see Colin right after the movie. My theory is that his family was traumatized by the dome incident and decided to move away soon after. It was sad enough that Lisa never got to see Mr. Bergstrom again but she had to lose the sweetest boy she ever met after such a harrowing experience.
Millhouse is elated they got rid of Collin!😅
9:21 It's just been recently announced by the one of the show's writers that Herb will be returning next season with Danny DeVito reprising his role.
Here's a twist...what if Collin was Hank Scorpio's nephew?! Also, yes, please do a deep dive into Jimbo and Barts main squeeze!❤️❤️❤️😘
I've not spared a thought for Colin in years. So maybe I'm missing the central thrust of what fans he has. But, it occurs to me the most potential from adding Colin to the extended cast wouldn't be further Lisa/Colin plots. Either saccharine puppy love, or contriving a narrow social-activism issue they're on opposite sides of just to invent conflict.
The most potential would be introducing Colin to Springfield: a boy that could be described as "responsible" and not also "nerdy". Not even pitching how specific character dynamics would work: just as a block of character traits for Springfield Elementary, or other kid-centric stories. As it stands there's no one like that. Martin, Database, or another background nerds are wet blankets to other groups of kids, or in a given scene there's a subversive character turn for the likes of Bart or the bullies.
Looks like they were going for the old IC belt Jericho had in the 2000’s
Honestly, a missed opportunity to have him interact with the family members when Lisa introduced Colin to them and they try to be normal but fail.
It's a sad thing we don't have Collin in the future episodes of The Simpsons... but then again, Homer hasn't had spider pig with him in a while...so I guess there's two loves that are never meant to be, moving forward....lol😂.
Alternative theory:
The Springfield citizens sacrificed Colin to bring Dr Nick back to life in some wacky rituals
If I was to write Colins comeback I would have had him return in the episode In The Name of the Grandfather as the grandson of the publican Tom O'Flannagan of the O'Flannagan's pub.
Funny that you mention Herb, since it was recently announced that he's returning for the season premiere.
I would have liked Colin, but I think Hank Scorpio could have easily come back with exactly two things:
1. He is clearly Blofeld, down to the cat and scar.
2. Homer doesn't remember him, leading to Hank explaining the episode, up to and including the volcano lair explosion.
I wouldn’t say I really miss Colin but I do agree with Yeardley that I wish the writers would let her get a proper win once in a while. Lisa Simpson can’t win, bless her. Well she can, but sometimes she just gets kicked about which hurts my heart if she doesn’t do anything to deserve it. I’m still salty about the entirety of My Sister My Sister, what did Lisa do to deserve Bart tormenting her? There’s naughty and cruel, and in that episode Bart’s cruel. AND he’s the one who emerges victorious by the end of the episode, final scene notwithstanding.
Anyway, in an attempt to stop myself from going on a proper tangent, I do still find it weird that Colin isn’t even mentioned after the movie. Maybe Lisa was the one who broke it off? I’m reminded of a verse in one of the songs in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, after Brad is convinced his relationship with Janet is over:
🎵Once in a while, she don’t wanna call you, speaking on the telephone
And once in your life, she don’t wanna know you
You look around, the one you found, she is gone🎵
There’s other lyrics, and the song does have a hopeful conclusion, but the rest of the lyrics don’t feel relevant.
Don’t really know who Shawna is because I’m still not too familiar with the HD episodes but I’m all for learding about new (to me) characters.
The status quo's always been a problem with the show imo, characters evolve at such a glacial place.
Lisa and Marge should at least have some permenant friend characters. Janey doesn't count since she barely counts as a character and her being Lisa's friend is honestly arguable, at least in some episodes
In the words of Bart Simpson: "Lisa's got a boyfriend, that she'll never see again."
I feel he was for the movie and that's it. I kind of ship Lisa with Nelson. She brings out the good in the guy and he brings out things in Lisa she normally holds in. Milhouse... He is the worst, and it freaks me out in most future timelines Milhouse ends up with Lisa.
it's crazy how many characters there are in The Simpsons who only appear once for the plot and are never seen again, like Francine, for example.
No way!! This was one of our next video ideas 😂😭
You lose! Just kidding. Good luck!
I guess movie audienceship reasons make sense for a real-world reason for Colin's absence, but for a lore reason, I guess we'll have to come up with our own headcanons....
I guess, after his _Summer of Love_ with Lisa, he had to _Walk On_ to the _City of Blinding Lights,_ _Where the Streets Have No Name,_ where maybe, just maybe, he can _Save the Children._
Or, maybe his dad's Bono, whatever.
And the real big question: When we will finaly meet Langon Alger???
She doesn't like him anymore:(
Anyway, he had an appearance in the Simpsons Comics, where he didn't really seemed like a quiet boy who likes puzzles 🤔
@@waltergilman3998 Simpsons Comic Universe is a strange place 😂
Personally I just saw Colin as nothing but a one off character. It felt like the writers had no idea what to do with Lisa in The Simpsons Movie, so they just wrote Colin into the film in order to give Lisa some plot to go alongside the rest of the Simpsons family.
Emo Lydia? Now that’s something we need to see. Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, Good Charlotte, etc. too I hope?
You’re right in how it logically makes sense to keep him contained to the film. Watch them bring Colin back in a sequel film though lol.
Of course! Loved them all and Escape The Fate and Panic! At The Disco - it was a dark time 🖤😂 and yes I’m sure Colin might make it back for a THOH or something for sure!
P@@TheSimpsonsTheory
Fall Out Boy makes sense: their name is literally a Simpsons reference!
0:59 That right hook 😂😂
My head cannon is the simpsons movie is like the spongebob movie it's actually the finale which would explain why Colin was forgotten same with Harry plopper or spider-pig and the episodes that come out afterwards are all prequels like spongebob episodes that came out after the movie
I don’t understand what the hate behind the Simpsons movie is. I was definitely a Simpsons obsessed fan at one point and I even saw it at the cinemas as well. It wasn’t until much later I had some friends who said they never liked the movie to begin with and thought it was just an excuse to make more money off something there was already popular enough anyway. But I really do wonder if they’ll make a second movie someday. I read not too long ago that the creators of the Simpsons were waiting to see how well inside out 2 did at the box office. Lo and behold it exceeded all expectations. I mean it’s strange to see how well a Pixar movie would do of all things too. So a sequel could happen now, although nothing is official as of yet.
4:38 sadly it's been almost 20 years with no sign of a movie bart didn't get his wish
I actually thought of an idea for the next Simpsons movie (if they make one); They could do something with the direct aftermath of the events of the first movie and I think it could shed some light on a lot of plot holes if the creators did it right.
Honestly being single is going to be the best option for Lisa, because in the president lisa timeline they never mentioned who she is with, right?
Well, did you notice who she picked to be her Secretary of State?
@@monarchist1838 yeah Milhouse, this is same timeline where neither of them get married or at least to each other.

Amazing video Lydia, buuuut did you just say you were 11 when the movie came out? Ahh come on man, I’m definitely getting old 😫😂 I was 19 and remember seeing it in the cinema.
Twist: His dad is The Edge.
I was disappointed he didn't get so much as a reference after the film.
Yea where did Colin from the movie go? Edit: I love your videos! They are so helpful for me to know more about The Simpsons so thank you for helping me know more about this series. Hopefully the creators will bring back Colin.
As someone who had their own Milhouse growing up, I’m glad they didn’t pick Milhouse as her love interest for the movie . I actually like Lisa and Nelson because I think Nelson genuinely does care about Lisa and could (and has in a few future timelines) change for the better. meanwhile Milhouse’s crush is obsessive and creepy and he is shown as being the exact same as his 10 year old self (or worse) in every future timeline
9:42 “ my advice is to ride it out make an occasional smart out equip and by next week will be back to where we started from ready for another wacky adventure”

considering we know Lisa in the future becomes president maybe do a future episode where an outgoing President Lisa coaches and supports her Vice-President who is Colin into winning the next election.
I don’t know if you take requests, but a multi media history of Bartman would be really cool in my mind
Colin died on his way back to to my homeland Ireland 🇮🇪 😂 i can comfirm he meet the same fate like soo many characters like Doug from Family Guy and poohie from the Itachy and Scrathy Show R.I.P to them they only crime was going back home 😢
I really wanted know what happened. Thanks for answering my questions.
Colin had to go back to his home planet
I figured it was a meta reference much like Poochy was (and I've seen this done time and time in episodic cartoons) but honestly I agree with you. It doesn't make sense to have him serialized. I always felt that he went back to Ireland, and now knowing she ends up with Nelson, it's still a happy ending in a sense.
I love how in your accent you say
“Lee-suh”
And then sometimes you say
“Lee-sahrr”
I’m guessing his family was chased out of Springfield seeing how Colin was party responsible for this whole mess to begin with.
5:28 not being with Lisa must have affected his hair somehow.
Moodswings?
homies wake up the simpsons theory posted
Amazing video as always😊
The only character I want to see again is Roy. We like Roy! We like Roy!
Yeah their relationship would've ended if it was episodical however they should've done what they did with Allison in Lisa's Rival, Kept them in but only show them in minor roles around Springfield. Who knows what kind of stories we could've gotten with that. I think that's a better way to work around his character, don't make him worse just keep in the mix of background school characters.
I do think it’d be interesting to see how Lisa and Colin would work as a couple, as we only know he’s into the environment, music and Lisa, and his dad isn’t Bono. Exploring him more deeply and more nuanced in the relationship could be a reason to write him out if they’re not long term compatible.
The show has an episode of the family visiting Ireland, season 20’s In the Name of the Grandfather, the perfect place for a Colin cameo but alas no. His voice actor is series regular Tress MacNeille rather than a guest star. Season 21’s Boy Meets Curl had a single scene with the Medicine Woman (also voiced by Tress), so a Colin cameo or part of a Lisa B-plot in ItNotG could have been possible.
I feel that giving Lisa at least one person in her corner, shouldn't be too much. She also ends up talking to herself a lot, Colin could fix that. It may be interesting to have Colin & Bart at each others throats, having a story where Bart has to deal with his sister Boyfriend. Lastly a lot of it can happen off screen, Lisa just occasionally bring up Colin, making Lisa's character someone who's in a relationship, but not see in one, changing up her dialogue (like Frasier's Mariner, you don't need to see the character).
Also we need more Hank Scorpio
Not Bono probably decided the town was too wacky and moved away as soon as possible. Oh and Shauna yes!
You’ve definitely got a point about each of the main characters in the family had their own story arc. I love Bart’s arc with wanting to be more like Ned Flanders and have him as a dad instead. It literally had me in tears when Bart showed the picture of Homer he drew on him making him look like Ned too!
Frankly im still surprised they made Spiderpig canon, had no expectations that Colin would be.
As for Lisa's relationships... can we please remember that she's 8.
What's your point? Maggie has had relationships (eg in the short "Playdate with Destiny") and she's a baby.
There's an episode of the Simpsons where Marge has a successful business by the end of the episode. Instead of losing it like when she sold houses or pretzels. The show writers just have her return to what she normally does by next episode.
Shauna is one of my favorite Simpsons characters.
Amazing video! I’m a Simpsons fan too and I love your videos and how much you pay attention to the show!
"I will not wait 20 years to make another movie."
So, Simpsons Movie 2 in the next two years?
personally i think that the simpsons movie happens at the end of the timeline because homer becomes a great father and a better husband but if it happens at the time that it does then homer just forgets everything that he learned
If collin was made just to give us that hallarious scene were Bart makes fun of Lisa and she punches him in the face I actually would be satisfied lol
Lisa wanted what she couldn't have. Once she had it, she didn't want it anymore. It's called middle child syndrome
Tbh I would kinda like to see a future episode where he's there instead of Milhouse, because honestly I'm tired of Milhouse Lisa stories, its been decades, the ship is terrible, the two don't get on or have chemistry long term. It just doesn't work and it's boring.
Hell, i just realised, the future episodes could even be used to bring more depth to colin showing how he changes as he ages, and what iffy behaviors crop up when in a serious long term relationship with Lisa as adults.
No one's perfect and Lisa doesn't need a perfect happily ever after, just a interesting end game.
You need to do a video about the cannibal in Springfield
RIP Colin. Hopefully nobody else has to go back to their planet to die. I got too attached to Roy and he left Springfield and a huge hole in my soul.
Maybe they go back to Ireland again because Lisa kept in touch with Colin. They became Penpals, emailing back and forth. He was staying with his family and they ended on good terms. She was invited to come meet him in Ireland and they spend the week together writing and making music, cleaning up the beach and she discovers his dad actually is Bono.
Colin could come back if Lisa had a storyline if she had to pick a past bf or had a flashback of her previous bfs
But other than that Colin was a movie character and probably won’t come back
Like they did with Bart and his Past Girlfriends in that one episode when he wanted to be with Cletus' daughter.
I personally wish that the characters age up about 5 years as i feel that could open it up to more stories
I remember when I was first watching the movie and Lisa tells Marge. "mom I've to to find Collin" I just remember thinking "wait who's Collin again." I don't think Colin is that memorable of a character. Also seeing how he never appeared in the show as a fully fledged character after the movie.
Quick Correction: they actually only have 3 years to make another movie based off of that Chalkboard gag. It came out in 07
I don’t really see what’s a big deal and the problem, not seeing a character only appeared once and never seen again.
Have been seen, but not much done with them in the show.
Wait.. We nearly got Scorpio's return?! Oh man, that makes me sad.
My goodness! I can't believe they only have 4 years to not break that promise! Time really has flown by.
I would like to see Hank Scorpio return in epic fashion.
They thought he was too boring. They knew we wanted more of the funny characters like Moe.
Honestly i like your channel but now i realize im an adult and not into the simpsons anymore. Was never my thing but love what you love
I did enjoy Colin as a character, it was lovely to see Lisa have someone to share with her values with. I’ve always felt bad for her being misunderstood.
Lisa fell in love with Quilloughby because he reminded her of a rebel like Nelson and Colin's charm. Until she met the real Morris...I mean Quilloughby
Ngl, you make a good point about trying to bring back Colin, it would mess up a lot of Canon things
Even just a throw away line about Colin moving away would work and be believable.
Another lot of friends of Lisa never seen again were those she met in summer of 4 foot 2.
Deep dive on Shauna please ❤
Colin could easily come back as a rival / ex of Lisas that work in a way that challenges her on the environment and activism. Think of it as like the Shelbyville Lisa. It could even allude to a bunch of reasons why her and Colin broke up while never really telling us why that's the case. Frankly the fact they keep misusing Lisa as a character is why people hate her so much, so having someone she can interact with constantly as a foil would make her more interesting. Like Colin is far too extremist to Lisa's more realistic ways or something.
