    This was amazing thank you so much! I was following the old video and was getting frustrated, but once I followed this one everything started working! When I launched both shortcuts for the first time I didn't have to go through the first-time setup. But that was because I had already setup Octoprint, so when I copied the OctoPrint folder in Roaming it had all those settings. Tripped me up for a minute. Thank you again!

    Great video Chris!!! I'm about a month into 3D printing. You helped me greatly get Octoprint up and running. Working on timelapse now (Downloading) and printing out an adapter for my sodastream thru the computer while watching on my other laptop or phone thru VNC. • @zora_tech
      @zora_tech 2 роки тому

      @@lv_woodturner3899 I did try that but unfortunately some packages do not work because WSL runs a bit differently that actual Linux. So some install scripts will complain about not "finding" or "having" certain directories or packages even though it does have them just set up slightly differently. I also had some issues with passing USB devices over to WSL as well and I also forgot to configure it to not always use up half my memory all the time even if I am not running anything.

    This might be a dumb question, but are you installing these programs on the main computer or the small one you are controlling? Also, I am wanting to use a regular old desktop to remote in to and no raspberry pi. So would I still need that small Tinypilot for control? If you are installing those programs on to the "smaller" box computer, what remote access program are you using to run it? I know there are a few questions here, but this is a new venture for me. Thanks!

    • @ChrisRiley
      @ChrisRiley  Рік тому +1

      These are being installed on a smaller machine remotely, but you can do this on any windows machine. No raspberry pi here. Tinypilot just makes it easier to see what's going on. I use real VNC to connect to the machines remotely.

    Here's an idea for a follow up:
    How about trying a few different RPi clones like banana pi's, orange pi's, etc, and see if it's more or less difficult to run Octoprint, or even something like Mainsail/Fuidd and Klipper?
    I've heard varying reports of success with KIAUH, etc.
    Would be nice to get a proper comparison, as even Bigtreetech seems to have come up with a RPi CM4 clone called the CB1.

When I change a theme on one instance, the other changes along with it. The title bar changes colour and stays that way after reboot I.e. first instance is red, the other blue.. Strange because they are both in separate folders as described in the video. Would UI customizer create a single folder for both? Apart from that it works really well.

    I built arcade machine (win and launchbox) a couple years ago. Everything worked fine but i remember i had problem with multiple usb joysticks and buttons. Sometimes after restart it change COM numbers. Same device different com. So player one buttons was actually player two buttons :D... I guess its serial communications channels and windows automatically assigns it. Did you consider it can happen especially if you use a usb hub? I mean after restart or turn off/on you will have mixed printers? Does anyone have experience with it? Because the principle is the same, after switching pc on it assigns several communication ports at once. (if printer is on) I'm just asking I am considering exactly such a configuration (my configuration was 2x 4way joysticks and 2x simulated keyboards as playable8buttons and sometimes ,not always it mixed com numbers. All conected over one usb hub)....your information is great as always

      You don't need a RPi to run this, I am running multiple instances of OctoPrint on my windows desktop printing on 2 different printers at the same time. Chris does a great job explaining everything to run this on a windows desktop.

    If your IP changes on the OctoPrint Host Machine (where is running) you will need to update your Shortcuts to your new IP. Just in case someone is looking for a solution for a problem that I was having.

    Would love to see the max number of printers you can set up on one windows box. Does Octoprint mention any limits?

      @@jomarx I suspect the USB port might be the bottle neck - not in dada, but in software accessing it. You?

      @@GeorgeGraves well, it will be 1 USB port per printer, so I think it will not be much of a problem (unless the USB hub is sub standard). In my Linux Box, I used a PCI 4 port USB card

      Yeah, it's really hard to judge. On this small PC CPU would start to suffer before anything else. I know folks that run 10-12 printer on windows without issues.

    I remember when I installed octopi it said it's not completely compatible with the prusa MK3S+MMU2. I configured it anyway and everything was fine...........until I got to a print with 6 colors (and no the printer doesn't heat up after you hit resume when mannually switching fillaments in the mmu during the print I had to do it mannually) and just over the 1 day mark............M112 more than once. Apparently that's the incompatibility. It sucks!!!!! I found some suggestions............and they didn't work I got it again. sigh........ I love octoprint. I don't want to get rid of it, but this sucks!!!

      @@ChrisRiley same here. The base directories are separated but the port 5001 and above just bounce back to the same instance. Something in the start up of the second server says something about preemptive caching base_url with localhost:5000, if that makes any sense.

    While this will be nice for quite a few and I personally think now a old laptop/desktop would be an amazing little octoprint machine WINDOWS SUCKS. Regardless of settings or programs I use windows will restart itself at some point to update. I'd rather use Linux and have a machine with way less bloat especially for older machines.

      You can disable automatic restart. It's not as simple as clicking several buttons, but there is many tutorial in the web. I have octoprint on 2 laptops, one with Windows and other one with Linux. Both works flawlessly. Windows works about 7 month without automatic restart. However, i agree that if you can install linux, theres almost no reasons to stay on windows
