OctoPrint, a Raspberry Pi and an inexpensive webcam definitely make printing more convenient. I've been running my Ender 3 on OP for about two years and would never go back to running without it. Great introduction to OP and I look forward to watching the rest of your series on it.

Octoprint is really cool. I'm kind of surprised that there haven't been any 3d printers where the mainboard has an optional support for a Raspberry Pi compute module rather than kludging together a Pi and the printer over USB serial and screwing around trying to mount the Pi somewhere.

Inaccurate statement with port forwarding, internet and ethernet are based on port protocols, what is dangerous here is having an authentication communication procedure transiting over plain http, so enable https and exclusively use it for that kind of purpose. Also more important since your machine will be open to the Internet, it mandates you to control and highly monitor your ports access with dedicated software like iptables and fail2ban and maybe some firewall rules on your router.
Overall great video, keep it up the great job :)

I use a Raspberry Pi 3 and it works fine. I don't use a camera with it so I don't know demanding video streaming is, but without the camera I can leave a browser open on the gcode page with rendering synced up and it works. Other than function as a web server, Octoprint doesn't have a whole lot else to do other than send and receive G-code commands down a serial line. If you buy a Pi with less RAM you might be able to give more to Octoprint by adjusting the gpu memory down..

Really looking forward to this series. If you are able I would love for you to discuss an issue with the speed of communication. I use octoprint on a raspberry pie and I find if I have a model that has a lot of curves the print pauses for a fraction of time waiting for a new command and I get tiny blobs on the print. The same gcode works ok directly off the sd card. So setting up octoprint for max communication efficiency is a topic I'd like to see.

I have reverted to sneakernet for printing, but I keep OctoPrint running (without being connected to the printer) just to monitor the print job via the endoscope I mounted to the hot end assembly. Reasons why: crashes, slower prints (yes, I did try changing the resolution settings in Cura - it helped a little, but not fully), increased artefacting (I assume due to the printer waiting for instructions) which really matters on detailed functional components, also I would still have to physically go to the printer anyway to clear the last print & ensure oozing filament is wiped properly as the job starts - so it doesn't really give me any advantage.

    Here's my situation.
I'm using a public 3D printer in the library and I have the My Mini Factory app.
Some objects can be printed directly from the app, but you have to have the 3D printer in question connected to your phone or pc somehow.
My library has the Makerbot Replicator. Can I somehow connected the library's, public printer to my phone useful octoprint?

I know the initial thought is that I just rebuilt incorrectly (I thought thats what it was too) but after many, many hours of testing, calibrating, and talking to other people online about it. I've narrowed it down to being octoprint. When I disassemble it and get the printer to run on the SD card, it runs perfectly, but as soon as I have octoprint run it again, my prints fail, nothing else is changed only octoprint vs SD card

@@SamTheEnglishTeacher I'm afraid there's a bunch of fake information here. Actually you need three conditions to START to degrade PLA : high pressure, temperatures above 70 centigrades, and a huge concentration of enzymes. None of these situations can be found but in laboratory conditions. The maximum degradation reached so far in these conditions is 0.3%. According to all that factors, the PLA can not be considered as a biodegradable material. Fact check that.

Not only are you over using "so-called" its completely unnecessary for every instance you used it. They are not "so-called" gcodes and plug-ins.. that's what they are and that's what they are called. Sorry I know I'm ass for this.

Dude, Octo print sucks. I have had nothing but problems, and why would you ever want to put yet another point of failure in the system. I can accomplish anything octo print can do with custom software.

I don't quite get the point of octoprint for makers/hobby use:
    Most printers have:
    The safety features built in
A display that shows you what you need to know (and to be honest, once the slicing is done and printer has started, why do you even need to keep an eye on the screen anyway)
Loading G code onto an SD card, very simple, very reliable
Being able to remotely start a print, when lets face it, the printer is in the same house you live in is just lazy
You still have to physically attend to the printer for powering it on / off, spool changes, cleaning / preparing the print bed and removing parts before starting a new print
Any webcam off the shelf can be used as a 3d printer webcam
the ONLY feature I think is actually good is the spaghetti detective to prevent further waste on failed prints - spoiler alert - there is a hidden subscription fee to pay for it!
