Got the Kick Off set today and while I havent had a chance to play it yet i have to say ive never seen a game packed as well as this one! And talk about good value for the money, two complete teams and two sets of everything needed to play, everything in top quality!
YESSSSSSSSS. I've been looking forward to this, and finally found it available! I'll be purchasing this immediately! thanks for doing this video Rodney! as always, your Stuff is fantastic! I use you as a guage for whether or not i'll like a game, and based on your videos, I have yet to be disappointed. Thank you.
Hey Rodney, so today I was able to find and buy the last Guild Ball Kick off set available at my local store. I am really impressed with how accessible this game is compared to other games in the wargame genre. What you get in the Kick off starter is awesome for the price. Thanks for covering this game! I can’t wait for the rest of the series. Your vids are immensely helpful!
You saved my life once again sir. Im setting up a Guild Ball League for my store and it looks like Ill be sitting up all night with my headphones in (so the Mrs. doesnt tackle me), and learning another game thanks to your videos.
Look very similar to Blood Bowl. I always wanted to know how Guild Ball was different from Blood Bowl so that's the perfect timing for me ! Having knowledge from the Blood Bowl video game really helped me understanding this video. Thank you for the great video and showing interest in that game !
Bloodbowl is a very outdated ruleset which hasn't changed much for the last 20 +years. It's classic GW design of "have fun rolling a lot of dice and see what epic things happen" at the expense of very low player agency. Guild Ball apparently has more modern approach which gives players a lot of control over randomness and putting their decisions as the most important pat of the game. From my PoV it's like comparing Monopoly to, say, Food Chain Magnate, Brass or at least Concordia.
Okay, now I am intrigued. I've always wanted a full-fledged miniatures game, but they always seem to be about pushing your guys forward as they push their guys forward then you attack. Plus I don't like assembling minis. So this looks perfect. Thanks for the videos, I look forward to the others!
Fantastic video. I know it would be pretty much impossible to do this in your usual game play video style, any chance of a livestream or periscope in the future?
oh man sounds like x-wing but it has an interesting ideas, i will keep eye on this series to see if it suits me or not. also i love the idea where you can download everything you need to play for free. thank you Rodney for the video amazing work as always.
Thanks for checking it out. I was really impressed with the companies confidence in their product - letting people try it out fully for free, before buying.
I find the kick measurement confusing, should you now be measuring from the edge if the ball marker and then placing it at the edge again from the measurement? Why do you place it at the centre of the marker?
This is a good question, and one I wondered about initially, but now feel I have a handle on. When a model is moving, you measure from front edge, to front edge, as I showed, but the ball is unique, in that it is really just a "marker" and doesn't have the same "physical" presence on the pitch. It sort of makes sense if you think of it from the perspective that the ball is quite small, but it's sitting on this much larger base (which functionally, is necessary, as it would be a nuisance to have a loose ball rolling around on the board :) ). So with the ball, when it's loose on the field, all measurements are to a single point. If the target point is at the end of a players kick distance, then the ball's base is effectively 15mm further past that, once centered on the point. When passing the ball to another player (as we'll see later), you do measure from one players base to the others. It's just when kicking to an empty point, or when it scatters loose, that the ball is centered on it's arrival point. That's a whole lot of typing, but hopefully it provides some insights :)
Quick question. Taken-out condition gets you 2 points (1 for mascot). Do you also get the 2 points if they are pushed off board and still have their HP?
That is my understanding. You get the points for enemy models who suffer the Taken Out Condition, and leaving the pitch causes a figure to suffer the Taken Out condition.
Watch It Played Thats what I thought. It mentioned it briefly on how to score points in the beginning of the rulebook, but then any time it mentions Taken-Out it only talks about HP going to 0. Took me a bit to find the small blurb about keeping HP if you are pushed and have more than the icy sponge amount.
Gotta praise the value for money here - 2 tournament ready teams, full rule book and everything you need to play a normal game for $60? Plus all the rules etc available online? I assume these guys were put on Earth as cosmic karma for GW
Hey Kenneth, I try to avoid advertising for particular retailers and companies in my videos, but I did a google search and came up with a few options. It does seem to be out of stock in some places, but that is likely due to its popularity. It will continue to be reprinted, I have no doubt. Also, you can check to see if your friendly local game store can order it in for you from their distributors.
Games Workshop games is expensive and focused on buying new items. Guild ball is focused on the game and free if you want. Guild ball is a better choice I think.
My small question is that, (with the exception of doing tournaments requiring the actual figurines) wouldn't they be losing money by offering everything online for free print off? I know try before you buy is great and i support it, but i still feel they would possibly lose money unless people want to actually by the figures and sets to play outside of their own gaming groups.
That might be the initial concern, but I think the reality is, that for most people, once they decide they are really into the game, they'll want to get the full experience through the miniatures and other products. That said, if you're content with the print outs, they make it very easy for you to get the full experience. Not to mention, if you are playing with the paper versions, you might share that with friends and then THEY might decide they want the actual models, etc. This is really just an all around smart move for them. It wouldn't work with every game, but I think with something like this, it's poised to do well.
You’ve said that Kick Off edition has everything you need to start to play. Well... I have that edition and still cannot play due to lack of second player 😂😂😂😂 But seriously, thanks for that video. I may use it as a way to convince someone to play GB with me 🤫
Is it wrong that, when I heard guild ball, I assumed it was some kind of dancing/intrigue game, set during a fantasy ball or gala? I'm...kinda disappointed I'm wrong. We already have Blood Bowl after all.
nice job as always. not big on the soccer based theme compared to similar games about football which is far more aggressive by nature. a combat theme would work better with soccer hooligans lol It is a good looking game with interesting ways to resolve where the ball ends up. I'm surprised this game is involved enough to have to do separate vids but thats a good way to do it. I like what I call the 'A.D.D.' overview intro images ; I'd suggest showing someone scoring which is the object of the game. really for any game it'd be helpful to see what you really are trying to accomplish in the game for example if you destroy a piece show dice or card results damaging then removing it from play or a tracking token reaching the end etc. hard to do in a short time but worth trying. I wish I could explain games better. Xwing is interesting but have been struggling to keep it simple. I get too detailed but give interesting info just don't have the presentation personality and am not concise by nature. lets put it this way I could wrote a novel but never tweet lol. I also notice in my own game vids audience retention can be high when showing closeups of rules and cards fwiw. to the point I was going to do vids just showing the rule book. I did do that in a vintage D&D holmes boxed set vid come to think of it but not all closeup. I do like it when you show rules excerpts. spending too much time on it could slow down the flow of the vid though which is probably why you don't do it more often or do an unboxing (?) I also notice you don't use subtitles or title cards to scrub thru. but I guess that slows down production and might interrupt your fast paced conversational style imho
Showing scoring before players have a sense of the overall flow of the game isn't the approach I wanted to take in this case. A miniatures game is a fun challenge to tackle again. The last time we did it, was with Dust Warfare, so I'm keen to be doing it again.
Have you ever played X-wing minis or Armanda btw seeing as popular as it is or isn't that your type of game because there's no board or it admittedly gets moderately expensive with expansion packs ; )? I cant recall playing too many games that did not have a board with spaces or grid outside of original D&D RPG. The ruler and templates in this soccer game in combo with dice is an interesting mechanic. I have a vintage Pirates of the Caribbean game from the WDW gift shop is the closest I can think of. 3D ships shoot at each other moving between buoys with cards. I shot a vid of but never finished. I have large plastic football players from the 70s that are used like minis without a board instead of strictly like toys. I never had interest in Warhammer for example. But have D&D and Star Wars minis games. I'll check out Dust Warfare. Amazing how many games there are. even when they're similar themes like the zombies they're different enough. I made a couple of games when I was a kid combining the mechanics of a video game and star wars board game. I don't want to show it so no one rips one off lol it was a fast paced game with a cool rotating board that everyone liked. probably not the type of kick starter game. not enough to pieces or complex enough to interest people. I actually used rubber pencil erasers in those triangular shapes that looked like ships. I made a custom small sized star wars plinko game last year. I may show that one in progress. other than that I like to house rule games to personalize them lol
***** Nice ; yep I went with Xwing because Armadas is a bit too expensive and the smaller ships aren’t detailed. The Xwing game is more of a typical minis ‘war band style’ one-on-one ‘it’s personal’ game. interesting the way they have so many ships wand pilots with different capabilities and abilities that give you the feel of the ship handling and pilot personalities from the SW universe. and interesting origin flavor text. choosing maneuvers for a new player is frustrating imho I suggest being able to use the maneuver templates like the range ruler can be for target locks and attack targets to gage maneuvers until a player knows what a ship can do or only play with 3 obstacles. I also suggested to FFG and I’ll do a vid on keeping cards more in a ‘hand’ or in a makeshift tray so your opponent doesn’t know what type of ordnance for example is fired until its fired. It’s interesting Armada has card illustration head shots of pilots like Howlrunner who you find out is a female pilot that way in the fleet scale game but no pilot illos. outside of promo cards for the ship to ship Xwing MTFBWY ; look forward to more vids. ashardalon gameplay a long time ago got me interested in the channel. I like these overview vids too. I finally picked up all four D&D Adventure system board games this year for less than $40 ea two brand new. haven’t had serious time to play them. I collect some games for the esthetics and theme also. I was making a custom Teifling warlock my fave 4e character. you can see I like to customize games. wanted to combine the games but it would be a heck of a time separating them back into each box lol WotC finally got wise like a lot of multi component games these days providing ziploc bags in elemental evil. I also got the Dungeon Command game to use the Monster cards and minis with ASBG’s. fwiw Dungeon Command a D&D game without dice had to house rule that one using attack mods and AC Monster cards too ;
After watching the 2nd part I think maybe you misunderstood what I was getting at. Not to explain the way to score but to show it happening in the in the intro like you were showing the movement with the range ruler.
I'm not sure if I've ever seen a tutorial be more clear than this on any topic ever. Great job.
Very kind of you to say!
Thank you for doing a series on Guild Ball! I love this game and am excited to share your videos with people interested in the game.
I hope it is a helpful resource for the Guild Ball community!
Got the Kick Off set today and while I havent had a chance to play it yet i have to say ive never seen a game packed as well as this one! And talk about good value for the money, two complete teams and two sets of everything needed to play, everything in top quality!
Glad you're enjoying what you're seeing so far!
Thanks for the tutorial series you do. I find myself watching for any new games I may want to pick up if you have featured it. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Gambit, very nice to have you watching!
Blood Bowl soccer, pretty cool.
Thank you.
Glad you're excited about this series Nicholas, and thanks for the very kind words about the videos :)
Awesome! Glad you are doing a series on Guild Ball.
You been playing Mike?
***** Yep! I have a Fishermans Guild team and a friend and I picked up Kickoff together so I have brewers now as well. I've been enjoying it!
Sweet!
Thanks for making this video (and series)!
You're very welcome Matt - glad it's been helpful!
Thanks Rodney. I ordered the Kick Off set after watching this. I look forward to seeing the rest of the series.
Hope you have a great time with it! I look forward to bringing you more vids.
I love watching your videos Rodney and have just purchased "Kick Off" so for me it is a win win scenario. And a big hello from Australia :)
A very big hello back to you from Canada - I hope you have a great time playing and thanks for the kind words :)
You are the man Rodney! Another great How to Play.
Very kind of you to say - thanks Cole!
I hope you have a great time playing and that the videos continue to help you as you get into it :)
Let the games begin! :)
8:45 "Dry Erase Marker," and he uses sharpie XD
ElectroMite Shhhh... no one was supposed to notice... :)
i noticed too.
but isnt it strange that Sharpie doesnt make dry erase pens? you'd think they would.
Looking forward to more of these for this game. Looks interesting.
I'm looking forward to sharing more with you :)
You saved my life once again sir. Im setting up a Guild Ball League for my store and it looks like Ill be sitting up all night with my headphones in (so the Mrs. doesnt tackle me), and learning another game thanks to your videos.
I hope the videos helped and you had fun demoing!
Look very similar to Blood Bowl. I always wanted to know how Guild Ball was different from Blood Bowl so that's the perfect timing for me ! Having knowledge from the Blood Bowl video game really helped me understanding this video. Thank you for the great video and showing interest in that game !
So far its looking like this game will have more complexity by comparison to Blood Bowl. We'll have to wait until the next episode to see.
I think you'll find there are quite a few differences - stick around :)
Well done, as usual, Rodney!
Thanks so much Bill!
Okay, now I am intrigued. I've always wanted a full-fledged miniatures game, but they always seem to be about pushing your guys forward as they push their guys forward then you attack. Plus I don't like assembling minis. So this looks perfect.
Thanks for the videos, I look forward to the others!
I hope you continue to enjoy the series Joshua, this one might be the right fit for you.
The new episodes can't come out soon enough. I was trying to learn this game from scratch a couple days ago but it is quite overwhelming.
Give me a few days at a time, but I will keep working at these :)
Great video as always!
Thanks Longbow!
Nice video as always WIP. Guildball is really good. Season three cards ARE available on the website and ARE much easier to read.
Yes, I'm glad they've been improving the layout of the cards as they go along.
Fantastic video. I know it would be pretty much impossible to do this in your usual game play video style, any chance of a livestream or periscope in the future?
Oh, I think we will do a game play of this in our usual way. That's the plan anyway - we'll see :)
cool, that would be awesome.
oh man sounds like x-wing but it has an interesting ideas, i will keep eye on this series to see if it suits me or not. also i love the idea where you can download everything you need to play for free. thank you Rodney for the video amazing work as always.

Thanks Rodney, you da man! :)
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed the video.

Hi Rodney! Is there any chance of a full playthrough of this? Or is this one just an instructional video series?
Planning a full play through as well.
Great video, clicked that subscribe button straight away!
Thank you kindly. Great to have you with us Robert.

It's a pretty great package for jumping into the game.
Where can you get the files for the print and play version mentioned in the video?
steamforged.com/resources/
I have some morticians release during the first season..... can we still play with their cards? Or the game has changed?
I'd just recommend you go to their website and print out the new cards - then you're all set. steamforged.com/s/GB-Season3-Morticians.pdf
Ha ok.... can we buy those new cards?
I'm not sure on that - they have in the past (for Season 2, for example), but the Season 3 ones might not be out yet.
Season 3 complete deck should be out in late January (around the 20th)
I'm looking for this starter box but can not find it any wear can you please help!

Is like a answer to the new edition of blood bowl?
Guild Ball has been around for awhile now, I'd say that's more of a coincidence.
Ok, thanks for the answer, happy hollidays man.
Which of the the two games is better do you guys think?
Sorry I can't help you there. I talk a bit about my thoughts on reviewing/comparing games here: ua-cam.com/video/p0Lv8LHadMc/v-deo.html&t=10m55s

Fair point :) All the best in your quest for an opponent!
Is this available and does anyone know the MSRP?
It is available, but for the MSRP, you'd need to look that up for your country.

Is it wrong that, when I heard guild ball, I assumed it was some kind of dancing/intrigue game, set during a fantasy ball or gala? I'm...kinda disappointed I'm wrong. We already have Blood Bowl after all.

On the internet you're never alone :)
