When painting the foliage of trees and bushes, it helps to remember that we are not copying what we see, we’re interpreting those trees and shrubs with simple, solid shapes of dark and light. Think more about designing the shapes to create a better composition.

Good one, again Phil. You may agree that there may be no other area/element in a landscape painting, be it studio or plein air, where you can instantly spot a "rookie" from a more experienced painter than how the trees and bushes are handled. Once you see the "fan brush" come out, then you know it's pretty much Over for the rest of the "painting"!! Just, stick a fork in it!! ;D
Not to knock him, but the Bob Ross approach is a no no for trees unless you want some "happy ones" that will be in a painting only suitable for all the Motel 6 walls!!! LOL :D
I totally agree with this. I love the fan brushes for clouds. Different reasons, but for me it’s the blending of it not the shape!
@@NCWildHeART agreed, sometimes the clouds need some softening, but not too much. So, I often break out one of the ten "brushes" that my mom and dad gave me,... at birth!! LOL ;D
Great advice on the trees. I like the little demon at the end. I see that sometimes you dona monochromatic underpainting to establish composition and values. I always have trouble when I go to put in the colors. I'm afraid of ruining the values. Do you have any videos on adding color to value studies or underpainting? Thanks!
Bob could knock trees out fast
@@philstarke.artist Yup, but "fast" may not always be the "goal" in painting unless you are being harassed by insects while painting outdoors. Some of my "better" Sierra Nevada plein air paintings were done while being "eaten alive" by mosquitos. "Let me out of here!!!" LOL ;D

Ansel Adams created The Zone Sysrem which placed each tone area in the picture into 8 zones from absolute white (specular highlights) to absolute black (deepest shadows). I include a complete zone or tone map (1 to 8) in every area along with my preliminary sketch.
