  • The Thrustmaster T248 seems to be the perfect wheel for sim racing beginners, which comes with great force feedback and a few nice details such as a LCD display that lets you switch between different modes and settings. Not bad for a price of around 350€, including the top tier T3PM pedals that come with it. But there is also one major flaw. Check out our review to find out, if the T248 is a wheel for you.

      If you ever want to quiet them just get some mechanical keyboard dampener O-rings and put one (or more if wanted) halfway into the space behind each paddle when fully depressed. This will DRAMATICALLY reduce the loud snap noise from them slamming back into their resting spot. 🤷
      (The much quieter actual "actuation noise" from when the paddles actually trigger/activate when fully depressed remains totally unchanged though, leaving them still satisfyingly "clicky" IMO.)
      I actually have a UA-cam Short on my account showcasing just this fix/how well it works and how cheap & easy it is.

    This is kind of more than just a wheel for beginners. For a G29 owner, it's a full on upgrade. I'm upgrading to it from my G29, the pedals alone are worth it, considering I'm on my second set of potentiometers and they're dying too. The magnetic setup, and overall build of the pedals is way better than the G29's, and the FFB strength and feel are both considerably better too.

      @@fabianheden8596 Just dust and shit messing with the pots. I even kept a bag over them to try to keep the dust and cat hair out, and cleaned them all the time. With both sets they took around 2 years before they failed. The first pair failed within the 2 year warranty and Logitech sent me an entirely new wheel and pedal set while letting me keep the old ones, which was cool. I actually ended up deciding to skip out on this wheel, and instead got a pair of CSL pedals with the load cell. They use the magnetic sensors instead of pots, so I won't have to worry about them ever dying on me like the G29 pedals did. Next upgrade is gonna be that really cheap DD wheel Fanatec has now.

      And the T300RS GT is not only a HEFTY +$150 more ($450 vs $300) BUT ALSO comes with the inferior last-gen T3PA pedals w/ eventually guaranteed to fail potentiometers vs the newer & current T3PM pedals in the T248 which have 100% wear free & faster + more accurate magnetic Hall effect sensors instead, AND significantly more pedal adjustability.

    • @Skynexstar
      @Skynexstar 2 роки тому +1

      A true step up would be a direct drive wheel but they are very expensive. The cheapest new one would be the fanatec DD which retails for around 500 usd for JUST the base. Meaning you need to buy a steering wheel, pedals and then shifter/handbrake if you want them. Will end up be around 800-1000 USD depending on what you get, not mentioning that the DD is also sold out and very hard to find/get your hands on.
      The thrustmaster t300 is a step up in some sense, but it is very old and the benefits are so minimal that you might as well just grab this.

The Challenger rig is a letdown for sure. Not worth the 380 I paid at Micro Center, its seems more like a $149.98 Walmart deal, but they were out of everything else, I really wanted that grey playside. They had something that looked like a nylon chair you'd take to watch your son's pee wee game, but it looked extremely flimsy. Right?... I also got fed up. Reviews really digging in on SOME aspects and disapproving it for those reasons, while loads of user-comments say it's overall good to great. - But then, I can totally understand if more experienced users, like reviewers, will just shoot it down for anything remotely negative. I'm like that with other things I'm experienced with, that's why I understand. But that's not very realistic for the majority of consumers. - The main thing that pushed me to this one over the TMX-set is that the 2-pedal... well, pedal... got a lot of criticism for being mediocre, while the TMX-wheel itself is solid. - I would've gotten that one for about 100 Euros less if the pedals were fine. But then I considered getting the pedals that come with the T248 separately for another hundred, but that would add up to the price of the T248 with the pedals (at least currently discounted), plus putting me up with the unused pedals of the TMX-set. - So for 216 Euros, and my first wheel and pedal set in many years, this can't be bad.
      I'm excited to try it. My biggest worry is rather the wobly table I have perhaps getting judo-slammed by the force-feedback, but perhaps it will only be wobly and I could turn that down. - Also, not so sure about Linux-support, but anyway... I'll MAKE it work, like I always have to. - Good thing that a lot of settings seem to be within the wheel itself, which is cool.

      Are you seriously that shallow??? O_o That's because Thrustmaster spent the money where it ACTUALLY counts!!! 🤷 The motor system, tech/internals, & the pedals.
      At ≈ 3.5nm this is by FAAAAAAAR the most powerful wheel in the $250-$350 price point! (T150/TMX are only ≈2nm while all every single Logi you list in this price bracket peak at just ≈2.5nm). And the feedback quality & fidelity w/ TM's belt + gear hybrid drive absolutely FUCKING ANNIHILATES the gear only motor system in the Logi wheels, which instead skimp on the internals to are built of nicer outer materials & thus look/feel "more premium" (that's where Logitech thought it was important to spend $ 🤷 I disagree with their take, but you might not).
      I'd rather have the VASTLY better functioning internals but a cheaper looking/feeling outer wheel, but if all you care about is exterior looks even if the innards are significantly worse that's not my prerogative. I care WAAAAAY more about actual function than something as mostly irrelevant as appearance.

  • @ast5515

    It's disappointing.
    At this price point deal breakers should not exist. The Logitech DFGT had a drop down thing that held it in place on a carpet. The G29 has it too. The T3PA didn't. It was a huge shortcoming and I was sure they would fix it eventually.
    They didn't.
    The feeling of the gears isn't a big deal in the G29. It is a big deal in the T150 though. It feels much worse, even though the force feedback itself is better.
    For context: I tried to upgrade from the DFGT. I tried the T150 Pro and the G29, but returned both due to quality issues. Aside from the stuff I mentioned above, the T3PA is a squeak fest. Sure you can take it apart and lube it. But that's not something you do to something that's 3 days old and under warranty. I also had a ton of wobble on the brake pedal. The wheel was a bit squeaky as well when the force feedback was working hard and the fan was loud.
    The G29 had the known wheel wobble and the brake pedal had a loud click when pressed halfway down.
    I guess what I'm getting at is that I disagree with your statement that beginners have lots of good choices. They don't. I wish my DFGT was still alive.

    • @Cooe.
      @Cooe. 10 місяців тому +3

      Except that the T248's supposedly massive "paddles are too loud" issue is painless, quick, and almost entirely free to fix... 🤦😑
      (And this is possible because they don't actually loudly click when they're actuated [aka triggered], but rather when they slam super hard back into their resting spot!)
      LITERALLY all you need to fix this "deal-breaking problem" is two small rubber bands like those used with braces or to make mechanical keyboard switches quieter. Just stick one halfway (so you can easily remove them if needed) into the middle of the small gap in-between each paddle when they're fully pulled and their normal resting spot, and voila. No more crazy loud paddles for literally PENNIES in less than 30 seconds. 🤷

(Though, I think I have a 2-year warranty from the store itself anyway.) - I honestly wouldn't take the gamble if the price-tag was over 250 Euros. - Also, apparently it's not suitable for drift-racing, due to supposedly the return-speed not being fast enough. But... perhaps there's a setting or a mod, unless it will just never be able to return faster on a mechanical level. - Oh well, too late for me now, and I'll first just try normal racing.

      in real life, cars even racing cars have power steering so the high forces with high end racing wheels aren't "realistic"

      @@user-wq9mw2xz3j completely true. I own a porsche spyder and an f-type SVR in the real world. load cell and force feedback are completely unrealistic unless your driving a car without power steering, so for classic cars maybe there is a truth, but i dare any sim racer to take the wheel of a modern sports car and tell me sim wheels realistic. Paddle shifters on these wheels are the closest to real life more than the wheel, and even then the microswitches in them are too precise. My f-type paddles do not 'click' like my ps5 wheel. Also im a helicopter engineer by trade, i use multi million pound helo sims to recreate catastrophic failure incidents etc, and i have not come across anything realistic made by man to simulate real life feel. However...as a hobby i do love sims for fun. But yeh, when simmers take things so serious..i stop taking them serious.
      Why spend 40 to 100k on a sim setup...go get a track weapon for real.

      @@Sabre_Wulf1 agreed except the last point, I mean sure real racing with whatever vehicle will give a feel like no sim can, but I don't think its necessarily wrong to spend a lot on simracing if one loves it.
      It sounds like a lot of money, and it is, I wouldn't spend more than 1k€/$ on a setup (excluding pc), but I'd still rather spend 20k less on a real car and instead spend that money on a simracing rig as it's much cheaper to run, no car taxes, "access" to race tracks, and multiple cars.

      @@user-wq9mw2xz3j totally get it, im a gamer too at heart, there is probably a safety thing in all this too. Sim aint going to get you killed unless your rig somehow is too real 🤣👍. Last point i made is subjective and i get your point of the extra expense of track days and wear and tear such as tyres and oil changes. I do love the sims, but i do love the real thing more. However, utterly understand taking the sim route rather than tracking for real. Its getting more expensive, those petrol prices are killer, i put £100 in my tank for a 'play' today. Wiped that out in half a day and prolly 2mm off my rears.

      Wrong, wrong, and wrong... 🤦😑 But way to tell everyone you have a T150 you bought once upon a time that you are trying to feel as best as possible about! 🤣 There's literally a significantly bigger power gap between this wheel (≈3.5nm) and your T150 (≈2nm} than the T248 & the $450 T300RS GT (≈4.5nm), and the feedback quality itself is significantly better. And the pedals are in a completely DIFFERENT FUCKING UNIVERSE vs the base T150/TMX model pedals! Hell, they're even still notably newer & better than the T3PA pedals in the T150/TMX Pro models!

      He means magnetic as in using wear free & stupid fast magnetic Hall effect sensors for detecting when they actuate (aka trigger) vs the guaranteed to eventually fail potentiometers that Logitech use, not just using actual magnets to make the force stronger or whatever... 🤦😑

    This one major complaint in this review can literally be "fixed" in mere seconds for mere pennies. Literally ALL you need to do is stick a single tiny rubber band/O-ring like those used for braces or quieting mechanical keyboard switches (these being ideal) behind each shifter paddle. 🤷
    To do this, simply pull the paddle in all the way and then shove just half of the tiny rubber band/O-ring (so you can still easily get it out later if you ever want to switch back to stock) into the space between where the paddle is now and its normal resting position using like a pen tip or similar, and that's literally it. Significantly quieted paddles = accomplished! 😁

    • @Cooe.
      @Cooe. 10 місяців тому

      @@OverTake_gg Np! And if anyone ever needs them to be even MORE QUIET after doing the above, you can simply continue to add additional rubber bands/O-rings into the gap as needed! (While ofc making sure that both sides are using the same # of bands.)
      And these rubber band sound dampeners don't even affect the paddles "actuation feel", as the noise doesn't actually happen until AFTER they've fully actuated! (Aka, registered a "click"). With the noise actually being from the paddles slamming super hard back into their resting spot. (And this is actually why the problem is so damn cheap & easy to fix. If it was the ACTUAL paddle actuation/"clicking" point that was causing the noise, it would likely be absolutely impossible to fix, or at least semi-easily that is. 🤷)
