After I did my Diploma of Counselling, I followed up with my Diploma of Positive Psychology, Solution-Focused Therapy became my linchpin to specialise in such an evolving therapy!
Thank you, for people who get training for the first time, this video is very simple and easy to understand, in this video she gives him strength that he can do better in his decision in future.
I think it is helpful for clinicians to understand not everyone will approach this case the same way. I think the session went well and demonstrates SFT techniques. Many people are mentioning she should not have went down the path of "a cooler location". When listening to him, he mentioned how he often "feels restricted" when living in warmer climates. He often "lacks energy". However, in cooler climates he is more likely to socialize, "be outdoors more, he feels he can do things at a more relaxed pace, and he has more energy". When she asked him what he enjoys, his face lit up when he started talking about working on the radio 1 day a week. It's obvious he loves this, he loves people, and the outdoors, but his life is debilitated by the weather. Isolation increases one's risk for depression. Being that he's getting little sun due to isolation this could potentially lead to vitamin D deficiency. She used all techniques which is the focus of the session. There are many ways to travel to Texas. As long as everyone are using the appropriate map they'll get there.
i have just started my self paced Diploma - so looking forward to watching and learning - and the most important factor in learning any course, it is learning more about 'self' too !

Hmmm, good video but I feel the therapist went down the least important path to begin working on, focusing on his wanting to live in a cooler place rather than what he likes doing for a job (working at the radio station and all he gets to do there) being that his job dissatisfaction was his initial presenting problem...I might be wrong but that's my initial thoughts.
EnchauntedGrant He seemed confused at WHY he wasn't happy and work and it looks to me like she successfully uncovered why. He isn't doing the job he wants to be doing. He can now move towards real fulfilment rather than micro manage a job he doesn't enjoy! And he can go to work with the knowledge that it isn't forever so he'll be optimistic about the future - which is the root of happiness.

It is extraordinary how quickly models change. This version of SFBT seems really dated now. the whole field has shifted over the past 20 years. this takes me back to what we at BRIEF were doing in the late 1990's. Doesn't mean that it is not modelling effective therapy, but so few people would accept this as a typical exemplum of SF practice today in 2020.
can you tell us more about what changes have been made to the model and how it would be approached today? Because I just finished a subject on counselling and this is exactly what we learned about it.
She suggested things to him like "would you say that you were more social" - I don't think that is the role of the counsellor to do this. I also agree with another commenter in that she went down the least important path (living somewhere cooler) even though the reason he came in was because of his troubles at work.
Is there any scope in this session to consider the 'exceptions ' that exist within his current situation rather than immediately going for solutions that require a substantial change of circumstances? Just thinking that 3 months is often still a time of adjustment in professional and locational terms and that another approach could be to explore how small parts of the existing situation can be explored for solutions and different options. Not a criticism but a different line of the 'exception' technique.
Hate that magic wand technique. I prefer to say to clients in an ideal world let's write down what you would like to change and achieve with the problems you are facing. We can work together to discover the solution to better what is making you feel unhappy. Not fantasy about things that may not be achievable. But SMART.
I would have been more specific with the question... "If you woke up and you were completely satisfied in your work, what would you be doing? What would that look like? How would you know?" I think that's what needs to happen. "If you woke up and your relationship was greatly improved/all the arguments stopped/etc etc, how would you know? What would your relationship be like then?" The aim of the miracle question is to work out what the client really wants, which sometimes they will only say if they play this hypothetical game of "What would you do without any obstacles". Oftentimes people become stuck by the obstacles; the "Yeah, BUT..." clients. I haven't used the miracle question often. I only use it when there is one specific issue plaguing my clients and it is very clear what they want, but are unable to say it outright with other questioning. This is also where reflective listening skills come in handy, "What I hear you saying is..."
l think in a real session clients respond better to more reflective listening between questions. Also, the presenting issue Terry 1 st brought in needs to be addressed in more depth!
@@susanrogers7854 yes I didn't spot any reflections - just questions. It seems it wasn't explored at all - potentially why there is some confusion as to what the real problem is before moving on to solutions, a bit jarring!

SFT always gives me manifestation vibes… like the visualization aspect and the getting very clear on the steps to achieve goals

What is it that brought you here today is not a solution focused start. What does the client want from the session?
Exactly. I mean many clients can start with "I just don't want to feel depressed" or "I'm not sure what to do with m life" as examples.
