  • Quick Skips:
12 Year Nosing is at the 1:47 mark. Tasting is at the 5:00 mark.
Sweet Wheat Nosing is at the 3:16 mark. Tasting is at the 7:00 mark.
Let’s see what the Barton Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky has been up to. This past year they announced that they will no longer be giving tours of their distillery to focus on production. While that was a big bummer, if they continue to release older bourbons like this 1792 “Aged Twelve Years”, I can deal with it. It’s made using the same high-rye mash bill as the flagship no-age statement Small Batch Bourbon bottling. The word is that this 12-year version will be released each summer at 96.6 proof and a retail price of $55-$65 (I do see some stores marking them up to $125-$200 though). For a little fun, I’m also reviewing another of their annual releases, the “Sweet Wheat” bourbon. Of course, that one uses wheat as the second (aka flavoring) grain - instead of their usual rye. It’s bottled at a “user friendly” 91.2 proof and doesn’t have an age statement, but my guess would be that it’s mostly 7- to 8-year-old with a bit of 6 year in the blend. Retail pricing on these are $45-$55, but similar to the 12, I see them hit upwards of $125-$175 in some shops.

As of September 2022, my current bottle count is over 2,600. I am a Certified Specialist of Spirits and have also been accredited by the Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT). I've been actively collecting for more than two decades and what started as a small basic home bar has transformed (with the help and understanding of my wonderful wife) into this collection and career. Speaking of my career, my “Saints Alley Bourbons” are on Total Wine shelves, and two new Special Editions will be hitting shelves in 2-3 more weeks! One is our Rye Whiskey aged in Tokaji (pronounced Tok-eye) casks. The other is a twist on our Herald Bourbon. Instead of just finishing it in Armagnac casks, we've also used some bourbons rested in Pineau des Charentes casks. Trust me, both are delicious, and given my knowledge and high standards, you know I’m working hard with my team to continue releasing whiskeys that we're proud of! Thanks for watching and please remember to drink responsibly. Cheers!

I wish they would release the high rye edition again. Wow, such great orange oils and chewy savoriness once it opened up. BTW - Barton is putting out some real winners lately. Calumet 16, Lucky Seven, 15 Stars 14 year old.

Thank you Scotty! That High Rye was a great one! I had the Calumet 16 recently and agree with you on the older Bartons. I’ll have to see if I stumble on the others you mentioned. Cheers!

Sadly, I think it’s a thing of the past. Unless you happen to be lucky enough to find an old bottle on a shelf somewhere in the Northwest. Cheers!

Ive never seen the sweet wheat around, but i scored a 12yr last fall. Sadly was not in to it. Too much bannana on the pallet for me. I blended it off with 1792 full proof as well as a bib.

I agree the 12 year is a let down. Not very much to it on the pallet
