I've been disabled my whole life. I am very independent, trying to do everything I can for myself. Everyone always has this amazed look on their faces while they watch me do things and always tells me how awesome I am for doing what I think of as mundane. Watching you I now get it. You are awesome! Why? Because you're so normal. I know firsthand how that can almost seem like an insult but please understand, your normalcy makes you extraordinary!

I've been talking with some disabled teenagers in USA - they have no schemes like motability and the companies that adapt cars are super expensive. Some are driving with adaptations bought off amazon and some aren't driving because they don't realise they can. I've also heard silly stories where people are desperate to get a prosthetic leg so they can drive - when legs cost tens of thousands of dollars or pounds and hand controls are in the low hundreds. I've been sending them here to see that you can drive and the huge range of things it is possible to do.

For me, when I started driving I was terrified. It took me a long time to get over my anxiety, but my dad told me that as an able bodied person I have no excuse. Not in a harsh way, but I guess I found myself inspired that people are able to drive even with physical differences, so the mental struggle that was my anxiety couldn't break me. Always interesting to see how these challenges are overcome with a mixture of technology and perseverance. My grandpa was an amputee and i remember his modified manual mini back in the 70s. Accelerator and clutch worked by the fingers of his right hand, and brakes by another lever next to the gear knob. It was frantic to watch in heavy traffic - always reminded me of the wizard of oz, working all his levers! He drove just fine, the length and breadth of the Uk, and never had any mishaps in modified cars (he only had mishaps in the dreadful 'invacar' type abominations that although maybe well intentioned at the time and 'somewhat' enabling, demonstrate the perhaps even less sophisticated perception of, and attitudes to disability back then)

Ok my thoughts on this video... what a well grounded lady you are. Firstly you have such a positive outlook. Not too sure what your background is and what happened but you have got to be an inspiration not only to other amputees but also people like me that take their life for granted. You are so brave to be doing everything you are doing. Also I was so impressed of all the stuff you can do like with the seatbelt and the driving! Fantastic work. Keep going and keep being the change you want to see in the world. This is what a brilliant person looks like!

    Dear Izzy!
What a neat video! Learning to drive and buying my first car was a big thrill, and I imagine it has been the same for you. The summer after I got my car (about six months) I planned and took a 3,000 road trip, just me and the car. This was the best solo trip I ever took, as it was the first, though none of my classmates believed I had done it. It was a huge boost to my confidence and my curious nature, and I can only hope that you will experience similar joys. So when you're ready... Brighton! Hadrian's Wall! Bath! But the most important thing is to have fun and be safe!

Wow, that was fascinating - congrats on passing your test! And how amazing with the tech - they’re not as wildly complicated as I’d imagine, maybe because cars can be optioned with keyless entry and drive already! But must be thrilling to have the same independence as many 17/18 year olds.
